    Polygon: First two sentences:
"When Nintendo launched the Wii U in 2012, there were a lot of promises about what the platform meant. Now, less than five years later, the Wii U is an unmitigated failure, not just commercially but creatively"

unmitigated failure....creatively!? In a hypothetical Desert Island Console World episode, if I can only take 8 games with me but they have to be on the one console, I think i'd bring a Wii U 8-pack.

Creatively it was anything but a failure.
And that this is still in dispute is nuts.

Nintendo's statement on the stolen Switch:

"Earlier this week, individuals claimed to prematurely purchase a small number of Nintendo Switch systems from an unspecified retailer. Nintendo has determined these units were stolen in an isolated incident by employees of a U.S. distributor, with one system being illegally resold. The individuals involved have been identified, terminated from their place of employment and are under investigation by local law enforcement authorities on criminal charges".

SQUARE-ENIX SAYS FINAL FANTASY XIV UNDER CONSIDERATION FOR SWITCH

This information comes from the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest 2017, so it's official. It would certainly be nice to see the support!

How Big Are Switch Games? Dragon Quest Heroes I-II is Too Big to Fit!

When it comes to buying the right microSD card, the most important aspect to consider is the size, and thanks to a leak from someone that got the console early, we know the Switch is offering about 25GB of free space for players to use. So… how big are Nintendo Switch games digitally?

Thanks to a Japanese’s listing of the games, we know the file sizes to expect for the system:

Games That Fit On a Nintendo Switch
    • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 13.4 GB
    • Disgaea 5 Complete 5.9 GB
    • Puyo Puyo Tetris 1.09 GB
    • I’m Setsuna 1.40GB
    • Nobunaga’s Ambition: Creation with Power Up Kit 5GB
    • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 7GB
    • Snipperclips 1.60GB

    Games That Require a MicroSD
    • Dragon Quest Heroes I·II 32GB

While there are more games announced out there, sadly the download sizes aren’t yet known.

This is a factor if you buy digitally.
If you buy physical titles you'll be in a better place, though if updates become as demanding of space as they do on the other consoles even 256GB won't be enough.
I'll be getting a 128GB micro SD soon enough anyways, that should keep me going.

You'd imagine they'll release an update of some sort that will allow you to plug a USB drive into the dock (should bloody come with a proper sized hard drive in the first place).

Has there been any mention of transferring purchased games from 3ds and wii u to switch?

Bask in the infuriating logic of Nintendo...

"It [USB Hdd Support] is still under consideration, but, seeing as Nintendo Switch has been designed as a console that combines the mobility of a handheld with the power of a home gaming system, the company worries that it will become an inconvenience for those that choose to save their games on an external hard drive connected to the Nintendo Switch Dock."

This was something I was always afraid of with the Switch, that Nintendo would gimp the console side of it in favour of the mobility side of it.

Not yet no but I'm guessing we'll find out when they tell us more about the VC on Switch.

Whatever Nintendo say publicly, the Switch is a handheld first and home console second (a very nice handheld!). The internal storage + microSD card choice is mobile phone territory. But yeah, frustrating design choice and more expense for us consumers, but we're used to that now with Nintendo.

That's one thing I do miss with modern gaming these days - the lack of physical game manuals. Was always a treat opening up a case and reading the manual - story, move sets, nice pictures. Now we're lucky to get a card if anything. :(

So you're playing a game off HDD and you undock. What happens? Until there's a satisfactory answer and one that doesn't require a load of unspoken buy-in from the player base, the external HDD is creating a perceived weakness in the dual nature of the console.

I can see a lot of potential dicking around with available space on the console proper to allow mirroring of game resources for quick undocks or warnings and caveats about lost progress and data corruption if undocking during HDD-based gaming, things that the press would savage in initial reviews.

They may not patch it in later but I can see why, if the feature is ready to go, they would hold off till the switch is out there and embedded in the public consciousness, and the player base is more accepting of the limitations this introduces.

Yup agree with that. Even in this age of digital everything I still tend to buy physical versions of books, comics, music and games that I like. It's nice to open a game box and find more than just a disc/ cartridge inside. Probably why I go for special editions :)

[sarcasm]That's it, Nintendo are doomed and should make only third party games for mobile phones[/sarcasm]

This is the issue really, and even if you're playing off a cart, if it's saving the games to the hdd, you will no longer have that when you go portable. Or you're looking at long times spent waiting for the game and the saves to copy from the external hdd to the sd card.

People will say that they should have included a bigger solid state drive, but of course that would drive up the price and possibly would have changed the profile of the switch too.

Depending on the transfer rate from a USB 3.0 HDD it could wind up being a matter of transferring active titles to the on board storage before disconnecting from the dock.
Imagining we have just click and drag, wait a couple of minutes, then off we go with a game ready to rock.... or something

The real issue is the design choice Nintendo went with. The price has gone up anyway because you're going to have to buy an SD card if you want more than a couple of full sized games on it, or you go physical and don't mind bringing a pocketful of cartridges about with you. Sure didn't they include a memory card with the 3DS so could have done the same with the Switch.

Re: transfer speeds - the PS4 does a pretty good job of copying bigger games from disc to internal in a few seconds.

So straight away it's less of a hybrid, and more so a handheld machine that plugs into your tv. As I said above, it was always a worry that one side of the console would be intentionally gimped to favour the other. Your points above are valid, but for those of us who have virtually zero interest in gaming on the go, it's frustrating that the Switch will be limited to accommodate for features we'll never ever use.

I'd have no issue with a "Warning - Installing this game to an external location will mean it will not be available should you disconnect. It is recommended you install to internal memory." message that comes up when installing the game. Let me choose where to put it, don't gimp the console and take away the choice.

We're less than 2 weeks from launch and the amount of stuff we still don't know is ridiculous. Like this morning, I've been looking to see when the review embargoes are lifted on BOTW, can't find a definitive answer. I know major sites and publications have the game, IGN Tweeted so a few days ago. I've heard it's either the day before or else midnight east coast time on Friday. It's like the embargo has an embargo.
