If anyone happens to have a spare Hue hub can you PM me please?

Had one lined up but it's fallen through and I've got 4 GU10's on the way from Amazon that I'm dying to play with ! :D

Hi htere. we are considering starting up the philips hue in our new home but are rather confused! Does anyone know if the dimmer switch can be customised to turn on different rooms using different buttons/consecutive presses? E.g. one tap would turn on the sitting room and two taps would turn on the bedroom?

Not from the Hue app. Probably doable via iConnectHue on iPhone or similar on Android.

It can be done in the Hue app

a dimmer switch can be assigned to a maximum of 2 rooms, you can then preset what up to 5 presses of the button will do.

    example;

1st press: sitting room on (any scene can be selected), bedroom off
2nd press: sitting room off, bedroom on (again, any scene)
3rd press: both on (any scene for each room)
4th press: same as above in any combination you want, all on, all off, 1 on 1 off etc..
    5th press: all off

If you're still looking for a hub I have one for sale that I got with two lux bulbs back in December but it's sitting in its box now as I got a starter kit last week with another hub.
Give me a pm if you're still stuck.

Anyone have the issue where they have to input the serial number of their new bulbs before they are picked up? Happened with my last three despite them being in the same room as the hub.

I got three coloured ones from amazon.fr and had to input the serial number for each one and they were in the same sockets as the white version.

I wonder is it something to do with firmware versions after the latest round of updates on the hub. Odd that it's only the colour ones that need it.

I posted this in the Bargain Alerts thread yesterday. It's still available, so I'm adding it here too in case you missed it:

The Philips Hue Go Personal Wireless Lighting LED Table Lamp is down to £46.99 the cheapest that it has ever been. I have one already & I just bought three more.

    Hi,

Did anyone manage to actually do this? When I try have one room on and one room off with a single button press I can't do it.

I have to pick a scene for the "off" room and there is no 'off' option in the list to pick from, at least not in the offical Hue App anyway?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Use iConnectHue app on iOS, it is much more flexible.

Just picked up a richer colours starter kit for £147 delivered on Amazon... From the warehouse.

Anything else I've ever got from the warehouse has been brand new so hoping the same here

At that price it would want to be. Got mine from Amazon EU S.a.r.L. for the same price last month.

New ones down to £149 so cancelled the Warehouse ones and ordered the new ones. Better safe than sorry.

Got cheap Chinese bulbs working through IFTTT, Tasker, Auto Input & Join but it's too clunky long term.

Ok thinking of getting a dimmer switch as I get discount in John Lewis:

     http://ie.johnlewis.com/philips-hue-white-led-wireless-dimming-kit/p2229480

Have 2 Hue bulbs downstairs and thinking of putting this third one on the landing.I also have Hue bulb in bedroom along with the Hue Go in the bedroom also. How does the dimmer switch work? So if I want to flick between dimming the lights downstairs to that on the landing can it distinguish them in any way or does the dimmer switch just work on the one light bulb assigned to it?

It works with the bulb or group of bulbs that you assign it to in the Philips app.

If you use the iConnectHue app you can do other features and have it control other bulbs throughout the house using multiple taps, but is a bit tricky IMO and not worth the effort.

    Cheers

So if I put the dimmer switch on the wall downstairs would I be able to control the lights on the landing and the 2 downstairs via the dimmer? At the moment I am using Alexa to turn on lights so more interested in getting the bulb than the dimmer but just trying to find a use for the dimmer as OH keeps on turning the lights off via the switch. Going to cover up the switches and maybe replace with dimmer switch but would want this to have the ability to dim lights upstairs and then dim lights downstairs or easier sticking to Alexa?

Yes, it can control all the lights in your home if that is what you want.

Just checked the official hue app and it's a maximum of 2 rooms

The first strip you link is the original strip which cannot be extended from its 2m, and also only does colour.

The new lightstrip plus (the 2nd one you linked) is newer, can be extended with up to 10 1m extensions (giving a max length of 12m and also does full colour like the original, as well as the white ambiance colours which I believe the original lightstrip didn't do

The starter kit you link is the latest version (richer colours)

You could do it in the original hue app, you can set the dimmer to control an many lights as you want, the only thing is the original app won't give you the multi press function that the newer app can do, so although you could have all your bulbs set to 1 dimmer switch in the original app, you'd only have on/off & dimmer functionality

I live in Holland and it was an offer as part of the voice of Holland. All the Hue bulbs i have in my house interact with the TV show.

That's a nice way of getting people to pick up a few bulbs. Someone in marketing did a great job :)

Yes but don't buy it at the current price. Amazon are out of stock so right now it's marketplace sellers. Amazon do it for £70. I have a list of stuff to order and did up a spreadsheet to make sure I'm ordering the right amount of everything. 69.98 is the price I noted a couple of days ago for the strip. Should have ordered it then - was going to place the order tomorrow but now will wait until they restock.

Once deal I noticed was this:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Home-Kitchen/Philips-Personal-Lighting-Wireless-Dimming/B0148NMVRE
Plain white and switch for £30. When separately they are £35.

Just wondering what the difference is between Hue White and Hue White Ambience, is there much of a difference - what rooms are they ideal for?

Hue Whites are a consistent/unchangeable hue (despite the range name) - dimmable, but no warmth adjustment available. Hue White Ambiences are adjustable from a cool/cold white light to a warm/yellowish one. I suppose the basic white bulbs are better suited to spaces that you aren't interested in adjusting the warmth in (corridors, utility rooms, etc?).

Yes, exactly this. I'd highly recommend the ambiance for bedroom, living rooms and any other rooms you spend lots of time in (office, maybe kitchen, etc.).

Hallyways, utilities white only might be fine.

However I'd also say ambiance for bathrooms.

The reason for bathrooms, office, kitchens, is that you can change them from the normal warm white to bright white which is more like day light, this is very useful for doing detailed work, like putting on makeup, etc.

Ordered my starter kit last night - started a simple search on amazon for something which could turn a light on at a certain time when we're away from the house. I should've known a simple €10 item in my head had the risk of turning into a much more expensive solution :-)

Is there a risk of any of these mesh/non-standard wireless networks interfering with each other - are there specific standards for these such as wifi that they should all work together? I've motorola baby monitors which have their own network (I think) in the house and a few Sonos'.

The baby monitors and sonos both use he same frequencies as wifi. Hue lights use zigbee protocol which uses much shorter wave frequencies the wifi, so they shouldn't interfere with one another.

BTW most of the mesh systems use one of two protocols, zigbee or zwave. Stuff using the same protocol try to avoid interfering with one another, but it is possible for other devices using the same frequency but different protocols to cause issues. But for the most part it is pretty rare, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Anyone taken the plunge on Innr bulbs? Compatible with Hue bridges (and Hue app)...

Reviews seem good and seems to have the same functionality as the Hue equivalent but GBP10 cheaper (for the GU10s at least).

I notice they haven't been on sale for very long so no indications on reliability over a longer period....

Why would philips allow them to be compatible with the hue bridge? seems an odd business model considering they are undercutting Philips own bulbs. Might try these.

Going to pick up a couple i need two more for upstairs to go with my Hue's. Quick question i presume they will work with the motion sensor?

The amazon reviews are very good. Might pick up a couple of B22 colour ones instead of Hue for a £40 saving.

Their colour bulbs (B22/E27) are about £20 cheaper than hue as well.

I'd rather myself going Hue only, though thats easy enough for me to say with 41 hue bulbs already installed!

If I was doing a full house/apt. I'd definitely look at splitting the spaces into primary & secondary locations... these bulbs would definitely find a home in corridors, stores, bathrooms, pantries etc... with Philips in the main spaces where ambience is most prominant...

A WARNING. In the past Philips blocked these bulbs in the Hue bridge firmware. People complained and they reversed that decision but they said the reversal was temporary and they might do it again!

Personally I wouldn't buy a large number of relatively expensive bulbs that could become useless at any time! *

They aren't that much cheaper then the Hue bulbs when they are on sale. Personally I don't think it is worth the risk. Actually I think it is quiet mad to even consider them!

I'd agree with Bluefoam's advice above, If you really do want to use them, I'd only use them in less importaant secondary locations.

    * Useless in terms of their advanced features, they will still of course work as a basic bulb.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 5,393 Mod ✭✭✭✭Optimus Prime

I wish they would get the finger out and release an e14 bulb. Im tempted to get some e14s from other brands that work with the hub, but id prefer to stick with phillips, id also be worried if they do ever release and E14 they would block all other e14s from working.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 23,163 Mod ✭✭✭✭bk

Also BTW the above GU10 isn't directly comparable with the Hue GU10. The Innr one is white only, while the Hue one is white ambiance. That means the innr one can only turn on/off and dimm, but it can't adjust it's white temperature like the Hue ones can.

Really white ambiance is well worth have for any main room location or any place you might want to do detailed work.

Good to know bk thanks. I was only thinking about it afterwards the place where i would be putting these already has one hue white ambiance so the colours wouldn't even match (use energise for during the day). Think i'll wait until the hue whites are down in price

Is there any issue with having a pair or lights on the same switch one halogen via transformer and one hue GU10 directly into the mains?
I've installed a couple of hue GU10 LED for my old halogens but they have all been on their own switch up until now. Basically can you have one light with a transformer and one directly into the mains?

Can you mix or am i asking for trouble?

I don't see why you couldn't do this,

when I did my kitchen, I did 4 first, then the remaining 6, but each time I fitted a hue, I would go back to the wall switch and check it to see if it was working ok, so during the phase, I was powering some new hue's as well as the remaining halogens via their transformer.

I don't know why you'd want to do this though as you would need the switch turned off for all lights off, and then you would have no hue control. you would then turn on the switch and have the halogens on while you messed around with the hue lights via the app/dimmer switch.

for me hue needs to be the only source of light in any room, its either all in or nothing at all, thats why I've 10 GU10's in my kitchen as well as 2 light strips with extensions.

I hadn't thought about the power side of things sure i'd have to leave the halogen all the time to have access to the hue ha. I'll just order another bulb and change both at the same time.

Amazon.co.uk still seem cheapest for me if i order in sterling. Pity there are no sales on anywhere
