What else do you recommend from there? I had a look at the menu and also had a nosey peek in the window at what people were eating and it just looked like Indian food.

It's like Indian food but different.
Newari Sadeko was seriously tasty - grilled lamb with herbs, spices lime and salad.

    I liked the dumplings too.

It's cleaner and more fresh tasting than your typical Indian.

My group all had dumplings for starters and had no regrets about that. :D

For mains we had lamb espetadas which was a really nice hot plate with sauce type dish, jomsom vedo which was quite similar to a rogan josh in an Indian place, also really good, and finally Piro Aloo Masu which was way too hot for me to eat but my spicehead friend loved it.

I agree with the poster above; it's similar to Indian but different - fresher in herbs and flavour, slightly less heavy and fruitier.

I must give this place a try. Sounds interesting.

Why did the wild west wings place on Washington street close?

    Because it's no hillbillys

I assume they were not making enough readies.

I'm always surprised the amount of places that open and close in Cork it's hard to keep track sometimes. A lot of _seem_ to be doing very well so I'm not sure. Maybe they're really bad with balancing the books?

Zamora is a perfect example of this every time I turned up I couldn't get a table (including mid-week) and then *POOF*

It was pretty poor. Hyped up initially but the food and service was not good.

^^^ agree with this, I ate there once and was very disappointed with my meal. My husband ate there another time to give it another chance and his was poor a second time. I thought the wings weren't good, that real vinegary sauce that makes your eyes water.

the sign on the front said "Gourmet American Cuisine", how can a chicken wing be 'Gourmet'?!!!!

There was work going on today in the premises where the Wild West place was.

When is Reardens' Montgomery's new restaurant due? It's in the old Courthouse Chambers I think. Fronted by Rachel Allen.

Wild west wings wasn't popular i think.

I'd guess the problem with Zamora is that it was run/owned wine shop guys, which means they had to hire the chefs. Chefs are bloody expensive. Restaurants that do well for a long time are usually owned by chefs who don't pay themselves the going rate for the inordinate number of hours they work.

Hi guys, I'm heading to the city for an overnight on Saturday ( new years eve). I will be ( unfortunately ) on my own - any suggestions for a place to eat where a single guy can get a seat early-5.30 or so. Also a good place after for a few drinks. I like the Imperial bar, and Market Lane, also Paradiso. Any advice for this Lonely Guy greatly appreciated.

    Not a restaurant but.

You could go to the Bierhaus for some really nice selection of beers and they can order in from many of the places on popes quay for you

That's what I'd be at on my own anyway

I think Elbow lane is back open now you could go there nice food and if they have their own beers on they're decent.

What about Pizza and good beer in the Franciscan Well or Rising Sons? There's football on tomorrow so if you're a fan you could watch Liverpool play City on the big screen in the Rising Sons while enjoying your pizza and beverage.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I might give Elbow a try - alas I'm an Arsenal fan. I'd be rooting for both teams to lose - an impossibility I know, but perhaps a 0-0 draw. I might pop into Mutton Lane after an early meal. It will most likely be jam packed. I do like the Rising Sun too, so a visit there also in the cards. If this year is anything like any other for the past 10 or so, I will be ensconced in a comfortable leaba when the bells toll. I'm of a certain age.

Tried coqbull yesterday during the day and gotta say its way over priced paid €7.50 for a small portion of spicy buffalo wings (a bit 2spicy for me but not bad) and €14 for a burger and chips(burger was grand and chips weren't great) no sauce with them or veg think for the middle of the day it would be better value. I doubt I,d go back at those prices anyway

Some of these places make a name for themselves and then think they can charge what they like. Have they increased their prices recently?

I was there last Spring for the first time. Honestly I wouldn't be rushing back there. The food was nice, don't get me wrong but I'm more into laid back, informal dining tbh. I thought it was expensive for what we got too.

Sorry for quoting such an old response, but I've been to les gourmandise twice since I asked originally and thought I reported back but I can't seem to find any posts from me on it.

I went last December I was most impressed by our waiter, her wine knowledge was top notch which is really rare in Cork for some reason bar the som in Hayfield manor who really knows her stuff.

When we ordered the wine knowing it was going to need a bit of a decanting as soon as we stated the name of the wine she flew into the kitchen without prompting and immediately tried to get some air into the bottle. Color me impressed.

Anyway she was great and the wine was great. The food was only so so which I was really surprised about. Everything seemed to be just that tiny bit over done or a flavor just a tad too much. It was not enough to fire it back but enough to be slightly disappointed.

For some reason I forgot about all the negatives and ended up back there again. But it got a bit worse. There was no knowledgeable waiter on hand this time nor did they offer to decant the wine (this is a small thing that I missed it's not that important). But the food was a let down again. Pretty much the same as the last time everything just a small bit off what it should have been.

It has a bit of a formal feel to the place I prefer a more relaxed atmosphere but I don't let it get in the way. I have to agree with Northgirl for what you end up paying you would expect a dining experience a few notches higher than what's on offer here.

My overall feeling is a lot of fur and no knickers :D
I'm going to say now I won't return, but I'll probably end up back there somehow.

    Republic in Ballincollig

Very enjoyable evening recently. A nice venue, plenty of space and light.

    Friendly and helpful staff.

The food was good all round. Menu is straight forward but couldn't complain about what we got.

With the toddler I'm going to suggest Milano. Plenty of space, decent food at decent prizes should be something for everyone

Market Lane is brilliant with kids and families. It is our preferred restaurant where we take our three and they love that they are fussed over and treated so well by everyone.

The Silver Quay in Ballinlough is nice, they do an early bird but the prices on the a la carte are quite reasonable so even if you don't fancy the early bird, it shouldn't break the bank. Staff are friendly and it's large and spacious, so plenty of room for a high chair or buggy if needed. The Elm Tree in Glounthane is also lovely. I like Amicus in the city centre, but it's not huge so you'd probably need to book. But to be honest, I eat out with my toddler quite a bit and I've never been made to feel any less than 100% welcome everywhere I've been. Even in 42A which is TINY they were very accommodating.

Avoid Cornstore. Aswell as being a terrible restaurant, parking is tricky around that part of town.

With a toddler and a large group I'd head to Republic actually. It worked out well for our similar group recently.

Or else somewhere outside city centre with parking.
