Christ almighty the first week isn't even over yet and I'm already prepared to sleep for a month. October midterm can't come soon enough! :(
Hardly a week and I'm knackered. Teachers have been ruthless with homework, tests and assignments. Barely finding time to do my own study. Not enough hours in the day. Weekends are going to be very much appreciated.

Better get used to this I reckon. It's only the 1st of September to make matters worse. :(

Don't worry, it will all calm down within the next few weeks for sure. To be honest it's just because all the teachers are full of energy but soon they will get tired and become lazy (not that it's a bad thing because that workload throughout the year would kill you)

We usually get an English essay each week and have a full week to do it (Friday to the following Friday) but as we were back on Tuesday we only had 3 days to do our essay (and weren't actually told until the Wednesday it was due for this Friday). I was so busy this week with football matches/other homework that I couldn't find the time to write it (this essay required research as it was a debate so isn't an easy one).

I decided to ask my English teacher for an extension on my essay and asked could I do it over the weekend as I was busy. I didn't ask for a note from my parents because I figured my teacher would be understanding and as a sixth year she'd be understanding/I'm too old for parents making excuses. Not only did this not happen, but she gave out to me quite loudly in front of the class and embarrassed me.

I also learned later on that she was "ok" with another student, who happens to also be a senior prefect (she's in charge of student council), because he "forgot it at home". You'd think she'd know in her 25+ years experience that translates to "I didn't do it but I'm afraid to tell you", at least I was honest.

Can't wait to go off to college where I'm hopefully treated with more respect and understanding!

Surprised there hasn't been any discussion on the DCG projects on here. I'm happy enough with the brief but that might change as the project develops.

As for handing work up late to teachers I know all of mine are the same and were the same last year where you either hand the work up on the day it's due or else don't bother handing it up as it won't be corrected.

It was a blender or something wasn't it?

I'm very happy I didn't choose any practical subjects, my JC was hell when it came to project time.

I think last year's brief was way better but this year's isn't too bad. I do think though that if I was choosing my subjects again, I wouldn't choose DCG. I predict that these next few months are going to be crazy busy with the project.

    Energy levels fine in school.
Look and feel like death in the evening.
Dark circles already forming under eyes.
Make a point of getting to bed earlier. ;)

College deadlines tend to be much more rigid.

Missed deadlines will usually only be acceptable with a medical cert or other documentation to support your excuse. ;)

College lecturers are well aware that for every genuine case there are 20 who left it to the last minute because they were out on the piss / shift (especially in first year).

Wow so week one is over and I'm already dead, how are we gonna cope for the next 9 months?!
Higher options is next week and I'm looking forward to a day with no classes hahaha,
As soon as we sat down in our classes, the teachers were talking about Assessments (instead of pre mock exams we have 3 class tests in each subject) which is a pain as you could have 3/4 tests in one day :(
Lcvp deadline for project is approaching and then history research even thoigh I haven't got a topic, fun times yay hahhaah

Is higher options my only chance to get most college prospectuses ?.
I looked up on the college websites and the new prospectus has not come out yet, when do they normally get released. I dont think external students are able to attend higher options, any other way of me getting the prospectus?

You can get them at any of the open days and usually if you send an email to the admissions office they'd be grand about sending you out a copy!

Your guidance counsellor will get boxes of them when they come out don't worry. They'll probably even be getting them from obscure ITs on the other side of the country that no one plans on going to.

I'm considering another meeting with career guidance, she'll be sick of me already but better sooner than later. How did you guys settle on what to do for college/after leaving cert?

I didn't really realise what course I wanted to do until nearly May of 6th year last year! Tbh it's different for everyone. For me, it just kinda clicked when I was browsing through courses and it sparked my interest.

Take one of those career tests online where the tell you what kind of careers you're more suited towards. Start investigating from there. Flick through the prospectuses and qualifax/careers portal until you find something that you're interested in! Talking to your careers teacher is a great idea though. It's never too early to start thinking about it.

I wanted to join the army but my eyesight was too bad.

I'm currently doing exactly what you suggested but nothing has caught my eye so far. There's always the jam jar making course of it comes to it.......

Same thing happened a friend of mine when he tried to get into the guards except he went down on the hearing.

2nd week of 6th year and I'm already so exhausted I'm falling asleep face down in my homework :o

Anyone else finding it impossible to concentrate on homework/study/anything school related for more than 30 seconds...?

I'm so glad I'm not the only one this is happening to! We have our 6th year retreat on Friday so tomorrow is the last day of school for the week! I can't wait to catch up on sleep at the weekend haha

UCC open day announced for the 8th. Should I go just to get a prospectus? They look nice on a shelf

Can you not get them online?

I've got a dozen prospectuses from 3-5 years ago lying around. I wish I hadn't hoarded them at the time :P

When you think of it, there must be a shocking amount of money wasted on these. Enough to fund a number of scholarships in each college I'm sure.

Every IT and university in Ireland and many in the UK send multiple copies of these full colour brochures to every second level school in Ireland, incurring huge postal costs too. They also give away loads of them at Higher Options and Open days and the like.

    Such waste.

Yep, and some colleges are ridiculous.

I happened to walk into a public library in the South-East a year or so ago. They had a good display of prospectuses and flyers on a big table inside the door; fair enough, handy to have available. By far the biggest pile though (of about 30 A4 sized prospectuses) was from Letterkenny IT!

    Lolwhut?!

I know they are trying to really sell their colleges as a great place to study with facilities and everything, but some of the sheer propaganda they pump those prospectuses with makes it fierce hard to get a proper idea of what certain courses are like.

I often end up doing a search for threads that mention a certain course I'm looking into on here just to get a better idea of what's involved.

great organisation there between nuig and ucc both open days on the 8th. i know nuig has the 7th as well but for those of us who cant afford to take it off were screwed 😂. just wondering is there normally a later open day in ucc during the year. if they could be somewhat convenient that would be great.

There's definitely ones on the other side of Christmas. I went to one in TY. Check the UCC website for open days. Even if there isn't one if you're interested in a course the staff emails are online :)

Our careers teacher said it's in Jan that they release dates for orals, Lcvp exams etc so presume it's then! :)

It starts the 7th of June and the pattern is the same [I think] but as far as orals / practical deadlines go, as everyone else has said they're released in January.
