Best before doesn't necessarily mean bad after. That applies to food also.

Going to be a lot of out of date straps for sale in the car boot sales now.
Some people won't have a clue.

Yea about food there's Bb sale date and use by. Some supermarkets now give the unsold stock to homeless shelters.

OH would replace 2 or 3 every year due to wear and tear let alone labels falling off. Got a good deal for short straps (8 x 10m - 5K daN) delivered for €90 odd euro from a company in Galway. Could do with replacing two 12m so will keep an eye on the site for special offers.

Base any chance of a link/name via pm please :)

If you are strapping down a load the straps must have the label they come with on them, if you are stopped by the rsa and there are no labels on your straps you can be fined:eek:

Yes and the straps also have out of dates on them too so watch that

A lot of safety products have expiry dates. The brother used sell safety equipment and I've a shed full of expired helmets and face masks. Never checked were there dates on the rest of the gear.

Knew they had to be certified but didn't know RSA would be onto you if the labels had fallen off and a use by date.

Today I burst a hose on the digger i have on the outfarm. Original JCB hose from 1973.
    Forty three years old.
It got me thinking, if ratchet straps go "out of date" in four or five years , how come there is no requirment to renew hydraulic hoses at a certin age?

Probably only a matter of time until something comes in.....

How long do you reckon the new hose will last ?

Sure some people could have straps and only use them once a year and others might use them every day. I am all for safety but some things are a bit ott

If it gets regular use, should be safe for twenty years, if it only gets used a few times a year, a lot less. And as long as the rubber sheath isn't damaged.
Once the rubber starts cracking, time to change.

I don't think you would even get that long without getting new straps or the old ones checked and certified.
We had to get safety harness for a job awhile back and I think they are meant to be certified every 6 months , I think it was working out almost as cheap to get new harness as getting the old ones certified !

    Like everything really
Depends how well they are kept and stored.
    If kept clean and dry
Or if left dirty and wet they won't keep long

All this talk of straps and hoses being out of date etc got me thinking.
I wonder when will I be out of date? I mean, is it going to come to pass that we'll all have to go about our business carrying some form of certification.
There's already tickets for this and that, licences for the other.

We mightn't be able to take a p1ss without a permit.
    Where will it all end?

When your knees make "cracking" noises when going upstairs, you know your last your peak!
You'll never sneak up on anyone again. (at least, not anyone with normal hearing :D:D )

Would they prefer if ya didn't use straps?
I managed to get my dad using straps a few years back after years of tying down loads with ropes

I don't think it's a matter of age. Just the condition of the strap itself. And God forbid if anything did happen they want a serial number on the strap. To see when it was made and if it's made by approved manufacturers

If Austin Gleason doesn't get an all star and young player of the year I'd be shocked!

    +1

The label on the ratchet and the strap have the date of manufacture, daN rating, must have -BSEN12195-2:2001 certification, not to be used for lifting etc.
