A 1987 W123? Is it an import or something?

    Yeah, looks to be LHD

I also suspect that oval sticker that seems to be (badly) removed from the boot lid probably had 'D' on it.

I think that Merc 200 is an 1980 , I see it at a lot of shows, A man near me has a 300D from new, bought it in UK, it was X reg (1982?) until 1986 when he cleared it and got an 86 reg on it;).

Actually the white W123 is an early car but it was used by one of the Embassies/state and had "CD" badges on it and a foreign reg. I heard that it HAD to be registered prior to 1987. It was lying in a local scrapyard for many years and was offered to me for a few hundred quid but there was a missing logbook so I passed.

The chap that owns it is a bit of a header !!

I used to see an 88 reg version of this car, sold new here, maybe still on the road. Very unusual, must have been sitting in a showroom for roughly 2 years before it had its first owner.

Ah!Yet another old irish registration conundrum!!
Wonder why it HAD to be re registered on irish plates before the change in 87?
I love the way ye merc heads spot the tiniest details!!:D;)

I remember seeing that car too, it was a dark blue one, used to be around Riverstick. AFAIK it was an import and you could still buy them alongside the 124 series for some time and you could still get them in South Africa almost up to the mid- 90's.

i dont know whats going on, i havent spotted anything interesting in dublin in nearly two weeks :( must be the blasted rain.

  • Registered Users Posts: 93 ✭✭Mr. 'H'

Saw it in Woodstock Golf Club.

They are gone now though, they were only there overnight. Judging from the sticker on the bumpers of the cars, it is a European thing, where they visit different places.

I take it this is a rare car so!

What sort of value would be on it?

    Maybe 40-50k.

I was walking by the Mercy Hospital in Cork last sunday and spotted a white Mercedes 250 Diesel with an 07 C 29xxx reg. The car was a w124 shape for those in the know i.e. finished production in 1995. I took a closer look and there was only 7,000 miles on the clock and the car was as pristine as any 1 year old car. Wonder where/why this was hanging about for the last 12 years???

Was it LHD? There's the SsangYong Chairman which is still in production and based on the W124, but doesn't look exactly the same and doesn't have MB badging either. Maybe they are still made in China or somewhere else in Asia? Can't see much information regarding that, though it seems apparent they got the W210 (E Class) in South Africa around the same time we did at least.

The Chairman is built in South Korea. They're based on the W124 alright, but look more like a W140. Nevertheless, they are still Korean crap.

Agreed, ssangyong, even the name is rubbish!!:D

A 1987 W123? Is it an import or something?

Pre 87, all re-regd imports got a 'new' reg ( if an 80 car was re-regd in IRL in 86, it got an 86 (ZS) reg.( From 87 on, you could have 57-D-*** or ZV **** on an over 30year old car )

See an SI regd W124 lying in a flats complex on Mt Prospect Ave, there's a green D-99- *** trade plate in the window, so it's either forgotten about or something happened the dealer.?

ALSO - On Sunday saw a Dk Blue 87 DeThomaso Panthera on the N11, ( nearly traded a Capri 3000 for one in Lad Lane dealer years ago - he was looking £4,000 for it, but I needed a 4 seater so didn't deal. Bought a 70 Shelby Mustang after for £2500 ! )

    .............W115 220D ??

I believe its former owner was from North Co. Dublin ..........if its the same car !

If it is its a superb low miles example in great nick !

The 88 Mercedes 240 I had seen wasnt an import as it had only 4 digits ie 88 C 1234. As for the W124, there are a few of these registered here from the UK with 97 and 98 regs so there must have been an oversupply of these models in the UK or maybe they were in storerooms for a longtime. When the newer model came out in 95, some people wanted to update the front of their W124. As for the 07 W124, if its 29xxx, it was registered this year.

I think it is the same car... very nice example with excellent brakes.

Interesting to read about the Chairman above... I think that solves a mystery that has bothered me for a few months. A while back I saw a 'Mercedes' but with odd badging, yet it didn't look exactly like a Mercedes. It was on the move so I couldn't take a close look and I'd convinced myself it was either some test mule or a pimped Lexus.

Do you own that Mercedes now?
It shouldn't need any work doing for a few years apart from general servicing - I did a couple of jobs on it and was very impressed by its condition and previous work that had been done. I believe a couple of other guys here have done a bit of work on it also. It's a small classic car world.
