I have to say the 280SD was smoking a bit more than it should, tho' it was cruising faultlessly at c130kph.

Well, i'm waiting for new injectors to replace the old ones. That and some finetuning should stop the smoking.

Hmmmm, are you sure i drove 130? On the N11? ;)

I was just curious as to what were the first S class diesels, be they european (i think the W140) or other markets

In May 1978 the W116 300SD was introduced. The 5 cyl Dieselengine used before in the W115/240D 3.0 and W123/300D and now in the W116 300SD had been provided for its new task with a turbocharger which increased the output on 115 HP. Mercedes had begun the development of this unusual S-class-variant, which was offered exclusively in the USA and Canada, with the objective to fulfill the consumption limit values introduced by the US Government.

Spotted this on the M50 right after I told wifey that men should not be in convertables. Classic cars are of course, an exception.

I had no idea that it was an Austin Healey 3000 until Gatster put me right :)

Saw this old London Bus outside Birr today, unfortunately the old camera phone doesn't do it justice, it was really gleaming in the sunshine!

Is it a hearse or a Clubman? Or a Clubman hearse? (my broters always going on about the Clubman)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭junkyard

I'd say it's just a Clubman estate, you wouldn't fit a very big body in the back tbh.;)

    Is it an Isetta?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,425 ✭✭✭tc20

    Is it an Isetta?

could be Wishbone, or possibly a Messerschmit

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭junkyard

I'd say its a Heinkel bubblecar.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 386 ✭✭Revelation Joe

I'm with junkyard on that one, a Heinkel/Trojan but definitely not a Messerschmitt

EDIT - the red coupe in the TOP pic looks like a Peerless or Warwick GT. The blue veteran looks like a Model T of some sort.
And the blue veteran with the white hood in the second pic could be a Ford Model A

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,425 ✭✭✭tc20

    @ Jozi - good lunchtime quiz :D

    I'll go for the following:

    1st post
    1st row pic 2 - either a Model T, or a De La Haye
    pic 4 - Gilbern Invader
2nd row last pic- Lagonda of some sort

    2nd post
2nd row pic 3 - stumped, though i'd hazard a guess at American maker
    3rd row pic 2 - Messerschmit/Heinkel/Isetta, one of the above ;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,563 ✭✭✭Blue850

The red coupe in pic 4 is a very rare car , a Turner GT one of only 10!. Triumph Herald based running gear with Ford Consul Classic engine. Produced around mid 60s. The book The A-Z of cars 1945-1970 is a mine of info:D

Spotted this Merc 230E in Mountmellick today, at a glance it looked to be nicely restored.

And just across the road was this late model Bedford CF van, import on 85 plate, haven't seen one in ages (thank God! :D ).
