Got woken up by surprise thunder in the Ballysimon area near Limerick City in the last hour. There was no mention of early morning thunder in any of Met Eireann forecasts. As the time of writing it is still banging. According to ESB Powercheck there are power outages reported but I am okay. I noticed yesterday evening that it looked rather unstable in the sky.

Please check out my varied content on YouTube.com/@jpmarn. That’s includes some weather.

The thunder and lightning in Limerick is insane. Some of the loudest I've heard in a while..

That was a lovely wake up call this morning, meaty bangs and rumbles from about 5.30am just north of Limerick City. Reminds me of the very rare but real thunderstorms I used to get when living in the Middle East.

Was woken by a short sharp shower just after 05:40 near Ardagh, Longford. Very humid outside and borderline warm. Very dark to my south now.

Lightning activity seems to have calmed down now and just heavy rain on the way here

Was woken by insanely heavy rain around 1:50am with thunder and lightening too - I don't normally wake that easily!

I see lightning strikes have appeared south of me.

I think I heard rumbles about 4 am too but I was zonked 😁

met eireann adding now cast yellow warnings to more counties this morning

Who wrote last nights script and who’s in charge there?

It’s gone to pot in glasnevin

I can see the un forecasted Kilkenny showers from here in Arklow and it’s 23c at 9am

Alot of nowcast warnings showing up lately alright. I was well away from the storm activity in my location but I could still see the potential in the cloud formation early last night.

Towering cumulus building rapidly to my West, which would put it over east Roscommon.

some lovely clouds over Roscommon. Taken from the East Mayo/Roscommon border. Hoping we will get a few sparks but think the sweet spot will be further east and north

what is today looking like for thunderstorms

A few scattered sharp showers dotted around this evening, hard to see much in the way of Thunderstorm activity. You'd think the Atlantic returning would spark off a few!

As usual, that is reserved for England.. Yet again..

Had a little bit of rain. Different story across the Irish Sea.

A good bit of activity for the very north of England and the south of Scotland.

Meanwhile, I've highlighted two areas in blue for us - probably will amount to nothing, but there is some convection kicking off in that trough line - whether it develops into storms, thats another story.

We may have a few pop up storms overnight here's hoping 😀

The UK Met Office are saying that the large thunderstorm over southern Scotland last week was actually two supercells. They showed doppler radar images. The cells also potentially had 4cm hail.

You can look up the video on YouTube for more info.

Shortwave trough and upper trough aiding instability tomorrow more so across the Northern half of the country, 300 or 400 j/kg or so with good lapse rates in the late morning / afternoon sunshine could pop off a few thunderstorms, looks like skinny CAPE so if storms do occur maybe not too big, more short lived with some heavy localised showers but probably well spaced out with good levels of sunshine and prolonged sunny spells for many if not overly warm but could see into the high teens and over 20C in places especially the S and SE.

Some big showers and thunderstorms, although possibly short lived, mainly in Northern counties today again.

Quite warm conditions forecast towards the weekend, prob too early to tell but may be some storm potential?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,421 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

    Very much so.

Air will be very warm, humid, and unstable, contributing to a likely high CAPE value, and some well known convergence zones will be fuelled to a significant degree.

Depending on the ultimate battleground location of airmasses, there is the ingredients there for extreme and violent thunderstorm activity, at least by Irish and British standards.

The partial breakdown does seem to have been pushed back into Monday / Tuesday, rather than Sunday / Monday, which will mean a hot and basically settled weekend for most, if not all.

At the time of the breakdown however, potential for danger to life and property from downpours and flash flooding over pretty hard ground, and lightning damage to built structures, crops and livestock, as well as to people working or playing outdoors. There will also be local tornado potential developing on passing squall lines.

So, if you're in farming, golf, watersports, kids camps, construction etc, or really anything outdoorsy, keep an eye on forecasts from about Saturday on.

Nice post, thanks. I'm planning on getting 18 holes in quite early on Sat due to the temperatures forecast then off to a bbq. Any storm activity after that is fine by me 😊
