All this is in vain I reckon.

The owner of the site has absolutely no interest and one poor lad is left do the majority of moderation for the entire site.

Feels like shouting at each other circling the drain here.

I know the boards is dying forecast is an annual event for the past decade or so, but it feels very much different the past 12-18 months.

It's just a matter time before you login and are met with a 404 error I reckon.

    Hopefully I'm wrong.

This is like reading a thread about being in an abusive relationship.

There are hundreds of moderators actively working away with no issues being seen on the forum mentioned. The 2 moderators are only stretched in the C/A's forum AFAIK. Why not see if some of the A/H's mods can help out? They would have an idea of how the forum works and who are the troublemakers.

No issues in the Radio forum? Look back in this thread, at least one person called it a “cesspit.” From readers through the posts in there this week I can tell that it’s a complete viper’s nest of paranoia.

Along similar lines - I had previously suggested that a bunch of CA threads, maybe any related to US politics\elections ones, should be moved to Politics forum, and that would take a chunk of moderation away from CA. I'm assuming in proposing that, that are sufficient Politics mods that could handle the extra work.

I was reading the thread where you put yourself forward as a mod over there, I never said there was no issues there.

With the way this forum runs, you're not going to get a significant portion of the userbase involved and offering feedback. People only come to this category of forums when there are problems. It would likely play out differently if it was an announcement post that was tannoyed to every single user via a banner at the top of the page.

sorry I think you’re a little confused, somebody else started that thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,253 ✭✭✭con747

Did I say you started it? Were you active on the thread and put yourself forward as a mod? If I'm mixing up threads I apologise.

Beasty will never change, same old same old with him. Maybe see if you can get someone younger and not stuck in his ways boards might be saved.

TBH plenty of excellent posters left because of him, trying to act smart and funny in prison with them with sarcastic comments a lot of people never returned and now look at the state of the site.

If you actually want to save boards Beasty needs to go. I wouldn't think this site has long left looking at the traffic.

    Exactly.

"Why is it only the same people who have problems that come to the helpdesk to highlight their problems"? Because they have problems.

Equally, it could be said that why are the people dismissing the problems and to praise the mods are usually the same people that come in each time too?

I was active in that thread but I did not put myself forward as a mod in that thread.

You were being needlessly ratty with that “did I say you started” remark, maybe you should learn how to take a correction with some maturity instead of lashing out.

That doesn't mean that complaints in Feedback and DRPs are a good metric.

Saying Beasty needs to go is a really nasty thing to say about someone who is actively spending vast amounts of time moderating and keeping these threads open. Put yourself in his shoes. Imagine how hurtful it would be to read that after all the hard work you've been putting in for years.

He needs support and a break. There needs to be more Mods or other mods step in and help.

I do think there are issues with some people reporting posts of those they disagree rather than actually bad faith posts in an effort which results in biased moderation if the entirety of the thread is not looked at. Coupled with a burned out mod and you get people banned for very little.

People should be able to discuss contentious and polarising topics without personal attacks, strawmen, and all the other infraction worthy behaviours.

Some posters just cant behave themselves and are either wums or victims to wums.

I don't know about that, saw one post recently referring to Camel-a Harris and another one referring to e-Loon Musk, I reckon you'd be able to guess which got sanctioned and which didn't, and by inference which got reported and which didn't, and which side was doing the reporting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 171 ✭✭The_Macho_Man

I still can’t believe how few moderators are active on the site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,087 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

There are plenty of Mods on the site. You're judging from a single forum out of over 100.

The mods, and admins, have, repeatedly, asked for users to report posts that, they believe, contravene the forum/site “rules”.

If one “side” aren’t doing that and, as a result, seem to be acquiring more, warranted, infractions, then, that’s really on them. Anyone can report a post that, in their view, should be reported.

I know there was a “push”, in a previous feedback thread, to have those reporting, what they viewed as, an excessive number of posts, themselves, sanctioned. This wasn’t met with much support from the mods, and admins, as they rely on the reported posts.

For me, personally, I think the users who are, continually, facing mod actions should take some “time out” to reflect on how they react to, and interact with, other posters and try to have some compassion, less anger and less hate. It can’t be good for a person to be so angry all the time.

The rules were changed recently to suit a vocal minority and yet the complaints continue

I'll tag @EmmetSpiceland in this as he said similar.

The rules were never changed to suit a "vocal minority", no one (of the vocal minority at least) asked for the changes that were implemented, they were changed for the benefit of the mods.

I have been more than polite in all my dealings with Beasty, and I harbor no ill will whatsoever, despite my own view being that he was quite snappy with me. I can imagine it is a thankless (and unpaid) job.

I do however think the warnings and bans are a little targeted sometimes, and from my particular experience I base that on *twice* receiving a warning/ban, despite proving that the supposed reason didn't happen and the fact that the supposed reason changed after that, with the warning/ban being upheld.

Nevertheless, I've been banned now for a week and frankly am less inclined to visit the site at all.

Most of the other forums seem to have active mods. Just because they aren't called on as often to ban or sanction certainly doesn't mean they aren't active. On top of that; Mods shouldn't have to be constantly interjecting in threads with their Mod hats on.

It seems Mods can't win. They'll be accused of being overzealous if active or ineffective if not. The amount of abuse they take would make you wonder why anybody would take on the role.

Anyone can report a post that, in their view, should be reported.

That's the problem that has been raised repeatedly, in the 'site is a graveyard' thread and going back years. Some people don't think calling Elon Musk 'eloon' is a sign of hate or anger, so much so that the person posting it needs a "time out" ... some people think differently, or you'd imagine they should anyway, if they were being consistent

In all my years on boards I've had warnings but only been banned by Beasty. Unfairly I might add, but not much one can do about it.
