Yes, I know my clouds, maybe not well defined but still evident on the back of some big hail showers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,341 ✭✭✭emo72

Ah deadly, I love a good mammatus cloud, only ever seen them once.

Weds the 528dam line is over part of the country as the upper low and associated cold pool spreads in over the country introducing a bit of instability. Along with clear spells it looks like there will be plenty of big convective showers with a good few hail showers with the chance of thunderstorms, sleet also and could be seeing a few white caps. A cold day especially near the windier coasts . In the S and SW a bit of mountain snow possible .

Several strikes not too long ago in west Offaly, from a shower that turned thundery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,074 ✭✭✭redsteveireland

Interesting skies again, heavy shower with a sleety mixture followed by a nice mammatus display. Picture doesn't do it justice, my son was equally as excited, "looks like an aero bar"!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,976 ✭✭✭Heighway61

Whose map is that? Don't see Netweather or Blitzortung reporting those strikes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,383 ✭✭✭highdef

    It's on a website called lightningmaps.org

I see there were several recent strikes over an area of higher ground north of Macroom. I wonder if orographic lift aided this. Possible thundersnow involved too. Apologies for the portrait format, am currently on the phone rather than on the computer, as is not commonly the case with me.

Cheers. Interesting that they all produce different results, presume it's differing tech. Will go googling.

Big rumble of thunder just now in Letterkenny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,296 ✭✭✭✭Oscar Bravo

Plenty of lightning in that storm

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,335 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Upper cold pool and trough spreading over the country along with diurnal heating and a bit of DLS giving marginal lapse rates but possibly enough to kick off some thunderstorms tomorrow with heavy local showers and hail possible too.

Will be interested to see if the additional shear compared to other days along with good spells of sunshine will aid convection leading to some lightning maybe a bit longer lasting and heftier than previous days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,512 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

Looking across lough ree at that heavy shower in Longford/north Westmeath. Clouds are just going up and up!

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,335 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Only a few sferics in the end in Cork and near Omagh, the lightning in South Kildare wasn't picked up.

Fantastic day here around Tralee, no huge drying I'd say but very welcome sunshine nonetheless.

Some fine clouds late afternoon but not able to transition into thunderstorms, a few drops this evening and cooling down now. cpould see the large CB's up along the coast

    Pic over Tralee about 16.10.

A few isolated thunderstorms possible tomorrow with good sunny spells, bit breezier in parts. Scattered locally heavy and blustery showers possible, some of hail but a lot of areas could stay dry. Deep layer shear arrives a bit late in the afternoon up from the SE but could aid some convection to spark up. No great stand out parameters yet but no doubt the proper April showers will get going soon enough.

    Thunder in cavan

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,335 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

A few short lived thunderstorms today.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,335 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Chance of a few sparks this evening especially in the SW ( maybe coastal areas ) or along the S or SE later maybe owing to Orographic lift with an nice overlap of DLS over LLS, could get a few blustery or squally showers with hail possible. Tomorrow more chance of thunderstorms more over a wider area inland but isolated and perhaps short lived in nature.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,335 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Big blustery convective showers going through here near Tralee this evening, feeling a bit cooler at 9.3C, some recent sferics showed up in the West.

Pic: convection over Ardfert Cathedral short time ago.

    Heard thunder here near Arklow

Shower moving in,1st of the day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,383 ✭✭✭highdef

Some very beefy showers around the country. Hail and thunder fairly commonplace in many inland areas this afternoon, with the fairly strong sunshine and cold uppers combined with other parameters leading to fairly intense convective showers.

Heavy hail near Granard, County Longford:

Heavy shower, possibly hail in the mix near Mullingar, county Westmeath:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,009 ✭✭✭Storm 10

Galway is surrounded by very dark thunder type clouds one heavy shower just passed the City ,wonder if we might see a spark or two .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,975 ✭✭✭Dazler97

Thunderstorm warning has been issued for the midlands, east and south east

Upper low with its associated cold pool moving in over Ireland tomorrow with a fair amount of shear available, meagre surface temperatures and probably a messy profile giving just ok lapse rates but maybe enough to give a few thunderstorms. Should have some hail showers and some locally heavy convective showers. A few funnels perhaps.

Best chance of a thunderstorm in the Western half of the country but possibly quite sporadic and isolated at that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,009 ✭✭✭Storm 10

Any chance of sparks from the front approaching Galway from the South

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,170 ✭✭✭squarecircles

Met Éireann have mentioned thunderstorm activity in the west, so as you'd imagine the shower activity is dead and failing to produce sparks.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,335 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Some activity in Limerick the last 20 mins or so, lights flickered here in Tralee. Big convective like showers here this morning and early afternoon.

The cell over the Shannon Estuary is very active. Plenty of thunder audible here in Shannon. Very slowly moving NW

No warnings they had warnings for thunder over a large part of Leinster the other day and nothing happened, there are active cells over Clare now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,906 ✭✭✭Comhrá

A fairly intense burst of activity around Limerick City.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,441 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

    Some recent sparks

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,335 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Low chance of lightning today but could get a few sparks in the SW or W perhaps but again isolated.

Into the early hours of Thurs could get a bit lively in Wales with weather moving across towards Ireland, will see if any storm migrates across to Ireland. Could be high elevated storms so possibly could be seen from the E or SE if enough clear slots develop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,283 ✭✭✭pureza

Was hoping to see a few sparks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,009 ✭✭✭Storm 10

Thunder and lightning in Ballinrobe and Belmullet, a big shower passed over Galway and has got thundery as it went North

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,335 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

They are massive storms heading towards the UK atm, some severe storms heading onto the coasts, set to be very heavy over Southern half of the UK tonight into tomorrow with a lot of thunderstorm activity, will see if the some activity crosses over to Ireland, don't expect too much but you would never know, very little shear or CAPE over Ireland tomorrow but a few might carry across the sea.
