Don't need the granny bloomers just yet as it's only 0° in south Sligo despite the white on grass this past few days!!

It's been a lovely crisp week. Great weather for walking. We got an amazing week of very cold weather in mid December last year. There was rime frost all over the grass for days. I'd love a repeat of that.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,300 ✭✭✭pauldry

Mullingar got down to -4.8c but Mt Dillon read -6c at one stage. Perhaps not quite as cold tonight as Wintry flurries but some of these will be of sleet and snow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,368 ✭✭✭✭JCX BXC

Frozen solid when I looked out the window at 6:30am, looked out the window at 9am and it was completely thawed. Very strange, especially given that yesterday some things didn't thaw out at all. Galway City.

Plenty lying snow this morning in inland south wicklow to quite low levels, probably 150 metres from the overnight showers

Hopefully some of us scrape a dusting

    Tonight

Tonight will be cold with well scattered showers over the western half of the country, possibly falling as sleet or snow at times.

    Tomorrow

A frost, icy and foggy start for many tomorrow. Some frost and ice patches may linger in sheltered spots but most will clear to scattered showers and sunny spells. Showers will be most frequent in the west and northwest and some will be heavy with hail, sleet and snow possible. Highest temperatures of just 1 to 5 degrees, a little milder near coasts, in light west to southwest winds.

Big CME impact this morning. Strong likelihood of seeing the aurora or northern lights under clearer skies this evening if we see the current stats persist. The 85% moon will be a significant hindrance to naked eye viewing but cameras will pick it up ok.

Strange how this winter is starting off so similar to last winter. Let's hope this isn't our one and only bite of winter like what happened last winter.

Got up to 3c here in carrick on shannon today ,cloudy now but there could be some snow ❄️ overnight, feels more like -3c , northern lights are another high possibility this time especially between 9pm and midnight 😀 that's if clouds aren't there

Light rain on and off here around Tralee late afternoon turned heavier early evening and just had moderate rainfall for about 40mins. Have to drive to Tralee early tomorrow morning, could be dicey, will see if it freezes later.

We had the first dusting of snow over the Seven Sisters mountain range this morning in NW Donegal. Does the heart good driving to work in the morning to see Errigal and Muckish sprinkled with a nice dusting of the white stuff. Here’s to plenty more this winter!❄️❄️

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,978 ✭✭✭Dazler97

Foggy now in carrick and there's great chance to see the northern lights especially now typical I can't see it 0c currently

I recall 2 cold spells last winter, especially in December but had another shorter spell middle of January. When your on a farm out in it everyday regardless you remember water tanks freezing, tractors not starting etc. I like this weather as long as people are able to travel safely I don’t mind.

Drizzle on and off Meath this late evening. Won't be hectic when drops to freezing out there ⛸️

Radar looking dead overall. Malin 1c and recording rain at 10pm.

Down to -2c here in Arklow now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,300 ✭✭✭pauldry

1c in Sligo some v light rain. Prob 1c by morning. Some light ice on some cars. Max was about 5c. Will prob get mild around Wednesday. Then wel see. Storms near us most days. The traditional paths of these seem off these days so probably some will miss us altogether.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,978 ✭✭✭Dazler97

35 % chance of seeing the northern lights (the highest in the horizon in years )at my location and yet its foggy typical 🙄 maybe one day I'll see them again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,738 ✭✭✭✭sryanbruen

Some lucky folk got to capture it on camera this evening but it did not live up to its potential. It peaked too early in the day during daylight then the Bz (orientation of the solar wind) went positive/to the north and stayed that way up until just after sunset then went negative briefly before swinging around. The cloud also became a big nuisance. The moon started to rise after 7 and that pretty much put curtains on it really.

There'll be many more opportunities to come. We are still only approaching solar maximum when auroras usually have their highest chance of occurring within a solar cycle. Look at the number of occasions 2023 has given us and we're still not there yet. Solar maximums usually have 2 spikes - the first was probably in June 2023 and the next one is expected in 2025.

Very foggy up until 30 minutes ago. I am hoping this is a sign some snow showers might be on the way. Perhaps a dusting by morning if we are lucky!

4.2C here atm out by the coast near Tralee, icy start but roads not too bad and seemed to have been well gritted even though black ice around the house . Good clear spells and sunshine, there was drops on and off, some beefy looking clouds about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,383 ✭✭✭✭nacho libre

I jumped the gun there was no snow overnight. It has clouded over with some light rain , but it's still frosty across the landscape.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,947 ✭✭✭acequion

I've really enjoyed the weather this past week and hope it continues for a while. My ideal winter weather. Comfortably cold, dry and still, though rain here in Tralee yesterday evening spoiled it a bit. Like summer heatwaves, we only get short bursts of winter cold waves, but I love every minute of both. Great to wrap up and go for country walks and then cosy hot drinks by the fire. Winter bliss, be fab if we got it for Christmas.😍

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,445 ✭✭✭esposito

Unfortunately it won’t continue. Another mild run up to Christmas is odds on. Charts are rubbish this morning.

However it’s the post Christmas period and beyond that is still up for grabs. From what I’ve read there is a good chance of it turning much colder late December onwards. Goes without saying though, nothing is guaranteed given our geographic location on the edge of the Atlantic.

I just hope luck is on our side this winter (for once).

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,075 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

We get up to Tuesday evening out of the current cold and relatively dry spell and then the Atlantic is back in business most likely for the run up to Christmas. Back to the model watching over the next few weeks for hopefully exciting developments over the Christmas period and beyond. The winter forecasts are very encouraging for the second half of winter but that does not in any way guarantee that we will get what we want.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,445 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

Orange snow warning issued for a small area of NW England,Cumbria including along the coastline. 2-5cm, locally 10 to 15cm before midnight from showers feeding in from the Irish Sea. Seems as if it was unexpected for there, pity we didn’t get the same luck today.

Beautiful afternoon in Galway. Quite spectacular. I'd say it will freeze hard tonight.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,978 ✭✭✭Dazler97

Very dull day here in carrick on shannon but despite the cloud its very chilly out there 2c

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,882 ✭✭✭✭Rock Lesnar

Wet evening in Meath, been raining since about 3.30, roads will be very bad if frost sets in after this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 124 ✭✭Condor24

Had some light rain showers around Athlone at lunchtime. Very annoying as temps were struggling much above 1c. Obviously warmer sectors somewhere in the layers aloft. But it cleared away and temps gave plunged below freezing now. Roads will be glass unless treated, I guarantee.
