I must watch that, Frenzy and Rope too. Have you seen The Rocking- Horse Winner? It's not a horror, but it is quite bleak ,especially the ending.

There is a brilliant "Downfall" style version of that scene where the ardent Nazi cant shut up about the great Brian Cody and the imminent "5 in a row"

1984 thriller Streets of Gold starring the brilliant William Defoe and Michael Pare. Dafoe plays the role of a bike gang leader who wants his ex girlfriend who is a singer back. Pare is hired to protect her but Defoe is determined to win her back.

I don't want to spoil it for any of you posters who might want to watch it. Aswell as a decent story line some of the songs are very good. It's one of those hidden gems. Give it a watch I think you will enjoy it.

Hopefully some of these weren't mentioned yet:

    From here to eternity (1953)

    The Hustler (1961)

    The Sting (1973)

    All the President's Men (1976)

    Blazing Saddles (1974)

    The Last Emperor (1987)

    Reversal of Fortune (1990)

    Deep Cover (1992)

    True Romance (1993)

    The Insider (1999)

    Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (2005)

    The Constant Gardener (2005)

Not necessarily my top films but ones I really liked. You could watch Goodfellas after all those, see how film making is really done! Just perfection.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

Just had an "ingmar Bergman" night.

Watched Persona and followed it with Seventh Seal

What did you think of The Seventh Seal?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,776 ✭✭✭silliussoddius

I think you mean Streets of Fire. From the same director of Southern Comfort which has been mentioned a few times.

i enjoyed it. Its linear and theatrical and full of symbolism.

i watched it after Persona, and it was clear by the end which movie is the superior one. Persona is clearly made by a director more at ease with his craft and more confident in his writing.

I watched Rope, Apocalypto, and Boiler Room over the weekend. Rope has some flaws, but I enjoyed it. Boiler Room and Apocalypto are good too.

Have you seen The Virgin Spring? It's based on a Swedish folk tale, and was the basis for The Last House on the Left.

'The Last House on the Left' is absolute crap. If you want to watch a tale that deals with the central premise of both movies then, please, watch 'The Virgin Spring'. It is, by far, the superior (by a ridiculous amount) version of that story.

I saw the original Last House On The Left on my video nasty expedition of the mid-80s.

I thought it was great, bought the DVD and the Blu Ray in later years. A great start for Wes Craven.

    Killer soundtrack from David Hess.

The Virgin Spring is excellent too, saw it early 1990s. Different vibe though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,956 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

I saw it during that period too, because it had such notoriety. However, it is not a good film by any standard. The limited budget notwithstanding, the movie has some very serious flaws that cannot be overlooked. And over all, it just isn't worth the status that's been bestowed upon it.

The soundtrack is one of the biggest problems I have with it. There's some ludicrous rinky dink moments in there that I cannot fathom the logic behind and the comedy cops nonsense (featuring Martin Kove of 'Cagney and Lacey' fame) is simply bizarre.

Seriously, 'The Virgin Spring' all the way.

And I say that as someone who's seen 'Last House on the Left' more times than 'The Virgin Spring'!

Mc Q starring the late John Wayne where he is outside his comfort zone playing a dective. As we know John Wayne is noted for his starring role in westerns so to see him starring in a 1970s detective movie was for me a bit unusual. Having said that I enjoyed watching Mc Q

    Good choice

Also like Brannigan from 1975 which also has The Duke in a police role.
