Now Woakes with a glove change, why ? Because he had to dive ? … play cricket ffs !

I think 350 was the absolute limit of being attainable for Australia. No doubt for me that England win this.

Totally agree, there's nothing in this series to suggest they'd get anywhere near it. They may try play for a draw, particularly if day 5 is rain affected which was suggested on Day 1 but that may have changed. The way England have batted shows the pitch is perfectly playable and runs can flow albeit the Aussie bowlers are all over the place.

Not a great shot from Woakes, deep mid off just placed there for that shot.

    putting the pedal down now

Another shocking umpiring screw up….never looked out… is there no end to these rank bad screw ups..

England tail failing here, not that it matters much

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,762 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Umpires again, standing around in silence, watching conversations, equipment adjustments, it’s about 6 minutes since Wood got out.

England will be abit frustrated they didn’t get a lead of at least 380… collapsing again.

Can they do something about it? I thought they can only do something with over rates per hour?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,762 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

    Law 41.10 covers it…

41.10.1   It is unfair for a batter to waste time. In normal circumstances, the striker should always be ready to take strike when the bowler is ready to start his/her run-up.

5 run penalties can be enforced.

new batsman to to crease, a few seconds to look at the field and go.

    41.9.2 for the fielders..

If either umpire considers that the progress of an over is unnecessarily slow, or time is being wasted in any other way, by the captain of the fielding side or by any other fielder, at the first instance the umpire concerned shall

    - if the ball is in play, call and signal Dead ball.

    - inform the other umpire of what has occurred.

The bowler's end umpire shall then

    - warn the captain of the fielding side, indicating that this is a first and final warning.

    - inform the batters of what has occurred.

Joel Wilson having a shocker here.

Is there more to that law because it was the bowling team wasting time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,762 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Ohhh my fûcking god, a shocker by Joel Wilson, missing by about 7 inches.

380 should be plenty. Bit untidy in the end but that will be a chase and a half if they pull it off. Spin will come more and more into it, big puffs of dust and good turn from Murphy. Moeen Ali looked to be moving ok, Root will be dangerous anyway if he can’t bowl.

England got a big score without anyone scoring 100. Australia will need a massive innings from Steve Smith to have any chance.

    Broad retiring

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,529 ✭✭✭Gillespy

We expected it to be Jimmy. Good decision I think, great career, got to 600 wickets and going out on top. As the leading wicket taker in the series potentially still.

Wouldn't be surprised if Anderson goes too. Maybe with a quiet nudge from those in charge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,529 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Anderson in interview last night gave no indication he’s going anywhere unless he get the nudge. I think he fancies going beyond Warne. Next summer looks easier on paper, Sri Lanka and West Indies I think and he can do a role in India too.

Some lad Broad, fair play to him, serious career.

Jimmy already said this week he's not retiring so I'd say he'll hang about for next summer.

Ok, I’d be pushing Jimmy to be fair….

    He is 41 tomorrow….

next Ashes is ‘25/‘26 in Australia….

I’d want to give opportunity and experience in the meantime to whoever…. So they are ready for the next Ashes…

id see zero to gain by taking him as a player on the winter tour.

” thanks Jimmy, there are others deserving of that opportunity now, it’s necessary to bed in and provide experience to a few new players “

offer him a coaching role…. See how keen he is on that. If he’s so determined for England to do well, him to play a role… see how that works….getting together with the bowlers… home and abroad….

Based on jimmy performance this summer he should be thankful getting a place.

Here is a pretty damming stat…

so far in this Ashes… only on 3 occasions have England players scored centuries.

5 tests, however many innings, was it 12 or 13 with weather ? And 3 centuries….

Australia didn’t bag too many more but still they had an awful lot fewer ducks and single digit efforts..lots of players with sizable contributions.

Kinda depends on the weather doesn't it? If it's looking like less than a days play, Aussies may well bat for a draw and take series win. Day and a half, they might reckon they'd be better going for it. Nothing is impossible, isn't that the glorious uncertainty of sport. In theory they're quite capable, any of their top 7 batters can hit a century, get good partnerships going and who knows.. Will Eng tail bat on tomorrow or will they declare at last possible moment? Still, you'd think the marginal weather conditions will likely suit bowling better.

Never did take to Broad, undoubtedly a great bowler and capable of match winning performances on occasion but his refusal to walk, constant chirping, the method of appealing by running down the pitch with his back turned to the umpire and then lecturing people about the 'spirit' of cricket annoyed me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,762 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Weather has improved a little from the last forecast i saw earlier…. Hopefully get around 4-5 hours of actual play in.

I don't see it as damning, just a statistical oddity that another two players got to 98 (Duckett) and 99no (Bairstow) without getting to 100. If they got the 3 runs to add two more centuries to the total, it doesn't matter a jot other than making the century total look better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,529 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Root was dismissed twice in the 90s, twice by balls that kept low. He’s been very unlucky.

A guard of honour!? Disgrace, get on with the game! 😜

384 to win for Aussies - while not impossible, they've shown nothing this series to say they can do it.
