Sometimes feel a bit bad mentioning Coorey Brooker. But he is exactly whom I think of when people mention politicians of a certain age without spouses. Various rumours are always going to do the rounds. See Lindsey Graham for a GOP equivalent.

As regards Ramaswamy, whether he chooses to pack it in would be a indicator as to he seriousness. He might hang on to act as a back up option if Trump is otherwise "occupied". If he continues to act a spoiler towards the winner takes all states, that would illustrate a bit of independence . More likely as you mentioned, he will act as a proxy for attacks on the contenders. Particularly if Trump continues to boycott the debates.

Can we keep discussion of the preliminaries in the dedicated thread

From a recent poll, with the caveat that it's New Hampshire, that has DeSantis as fifth. So that's Trump, Ramaswamy, Haley and Chris Christie (!) all ahead of him. Short of a spectacular debate performance next week, his campaign would seem dead in the dead water.

Edit: Just saw the mod note. Apologies.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned, but DeSantis is going to debate the governor of California, Gavin Newsom on Fox, moderated by Sean Hannity in November.

I have to agree with Beau on this one, the first thought I had was, why? But it totally makes sense.

DeSantis can come up against an opponent that isn't in the running for the nomination. The opponent (and his state) would be the complete polar opposite, social politics speaking, and he's probably hoping for a soft touch from Hannity and Fox (which I'm not sure is guaranteed)

Newsom on the otherhand... It raises his national profile for a run in 2028. He can campaign on a "unifier" tag, a "president for all", unafraid to go into the lions den, as it were. He's generally regarded as an excellent debater. Lastly, it's probably the only way to reach out to republicans with a democrat message, because they sure as hell aren't watching NBC, or MSNBC etc.

The timing is also decent for DeSantis, it's scheduled for after the third GOP debate. So either a chance to consolidate afterwards or to up his media coverage.

Newsom is taking the long run view. If somehow RDS beats Trump and later Biden, he has the accolade of already having jousted with him.

Newsom would also seem to be willing to use his veto powers to demonstrate a degree of independence. As the above poster described, run as a unifier, as a president for all Americans.

    Win-win for both of them.

    "Win-win for both of them"

Unless of course, one wipes the floor with the other. I do hope Newsom is there to attack Ron and his ridiculous anti-LGBT/Disney policies and calls him out for not distancing himself from nazi's. If Newsom plays it bland and boring, he's toast and DeSantis will win. Newsom needs to go for the jugular imo.

There's also a distinct possibility that if DeSantis doesn't win the nomination this time, this could be the trailer for the head to head debates in 2028.

"one wipes the floor with the other."

Find that quite unlikely. For their ideological shortcomings, neither one is particularly dim. More likely that both provide enough talking points for the likes of Fox and MSNBC to replay ad-nauseam. Their relevant camps declare them the winner.

Quite possible they are both in contention in 2028.

Yep their respective echo chambers will declare their chosen fighter the winner nonetheless.

Its win/win for both as you say, if RDS gets wiped out then it proves what most suspect he isn't ready for the main event, but if he has a good night it gives his teetering campaign a shot in the arm. Newsom gets his name out their even even more so.

For all Newsom flaws, have to admire how he seems content to go on "enemy territory" quite often, oddly enough Trump is one of the few others who does this but he just wants attention. With MSNBC, Fox and other "safe spaces" very few of the big hitters these days do that any more unfortunately.

    DeSantis is done and dusted.

    An utterly busted flush.

He is term limited in 2026 in Florida so he's out of office and given his abject performance thus far in the Presidential primaries he hasn't a hope of being even a viable primary candidate in 2028.

And to top it off , if he wanted to try to run for a Florida Senate seat in 2026 to stay in the game , he's blown that chance too as his popularity in Florida has cratered since he became an absentee landlord while he pretends to run for the Presidential nomination.

DeSantis will lose the Primaries , slink back to Florida and dissolve into obscurity over the next two years as a lame duck Governor without any avenues for a political future.

    Oh, Ron.

Ron is put on blast by the White House, the Israeli government, Florida Dems, and the media, for claiming false credit in the october gaza war.

His office, according to Reuters, said it had worked to “get weapons and ammunition to Israel through private parties” as part of his high-profile “rescue operation”. The operation involved sending humanitarian supplies on chartered planes and returning from Israel hundreds of US citizens who wanted to come home following the Hamas attacks.

His boast, however, started to unravel when Maor Elbaz-Starinsky, Israel’s consul general, told the news agency he had not asked for DeSantis’s help, and that the governor’s involvement was limited to smoothing paperwork requirements for a previously arranged shipment of “rifle parts” ordered by his government.

“I am not aware and would find it very, very bizarre to think that somebody is procuring weapons and sending it to Israel,” he said. “This is not how we work. And certainly not privately funded.”

A cautionary tale on biding your time. Can't see him attracting the same attention in 2028 or 2032.
