They should give it to some undertaker to keep up the misery/death theme he had setup.

I was going to comment on a successor to Tubridy on the Late Late.

But when I look at the possible successors I realise I don't want to think about it at all!

We are a nation significantly short of TV and radio talent.

The Burke children would seem to be the best suggestion so far. We could all do with getting a few decades of the rosary in on a Friday night followed by a weekly discussion on the conflict between religion and the Constitution. Maybe even get a few bishops on and then have a Cardinal on as a special guest for the Valentines Day show.

Not a fan of Tubs and not a fan of TLLS.

Unlikely that RTÉ would axe TLLS, simply because it is the show that remains relatively ok, and it remains a stalwart of RTÉ's programming... this is not a complement to TLLS or Tubs, TLLS has brand and swimming in an ocean of nothingness from RTÉ it can stand tall, regardless of who is presenting the series in its current lifecycle its a buoy for other content, much like Fair City and the News.

With all the best wishes to Tubs... what does he do next? In terms of television it has been not great for Pat Kenny, and even Tubs time in the mid-morning slot on 2FM should have clearly shown Tubs that he doesn't have star power and that Radio 1 and TLLS roles buoyed his later career. In fairness to Tubs both The Full Irish on 2FM and Tubrity Tonight were refreshing for their time but since his move to Radio 1 and TLLS he has stagnated and I'd even say he's bored.

This leaves RTÉ with a new TV show for Tubrity that will possibly fail... or it will be a series of historic docs that RTÉ can point to as being "Public Service Broadcasting" at its best leaving Tubs in a pseudo-Micheal Portillo role travelling the country looking at "Ireland: sure begorrah and be the hokey", those docs will eventually disappear into the ether like many other celeb driven docs from RTÉ that have gone before it.

Tubs possibly thinks it will be a breeze without TLLS, I imagine it will be harder than he suspects and if Newstalk play their cards right they can significantly take his audience from Radio.

Best of luck to him but I am reminded of Simon Dee.

So what will the Toyman do now?

Surely he has some new RTE gig lined up. One that involves him being jetted around the world in five-star luxury so that he can interview Irish people abroad or something.

That's exactly it. I don't think the actress was impressed either with me.

Dara O'Brien, go down the route of the Graham Norton model

Not sure who they'll get to be honest, Tubbs was abysmal. The thing with the Gaybo era was that he tackled the serious subjects in depth and wasn't afraid to court controversy but he also had great comedic and musical guest and gave them space to do their thing. It was very watchable and pretty decent, even to a teenager as I was in that era.

Tubbs on the other hand didn't look prepared for most interveiws and if a guest strays off the path and it's not on Ryan's cards he'll pull them back on course by changing subject with a spurious "tell us about your irish granny". Who cares? That an 99 flavours of misery on each show. It's not appealing anymore or remotely interesting. Life is hard enough for many at the moment and I don't think anyone watching on a Friday night needs a super concentrated dose to remind them just how crappy the world is. Gay wouldn't have lasted past 1968 with drivel like the current show.

The big problem is that nowadays we aren't that big a market so it's easier for anyone promoting something to come to London and get inreviewed there and they're not going to schlep over to Dublin for a one-off in a small market. In Gay's time it was different but I also think he had built up a personal relationship with a lot of his regulars so they'd make the trip regardless, and they knew he had form as an interviewer so they'd come across in a great light and have the freedom to do their thing. Contrast that with Tubbs!

RTE have a talent problem in that they've been doubling down on the same tired names for years and not bringing many new faces through the ranks. It'll never happen but I've been impressed with Louise Duffy after she took over from Ronan Collins. The LLS is a totally different beast but we could do with someone upbeat and positive at this stage.

I believe that RTE have already decided this months ago and it's going to be Tommy T

And make it a double act with his “it’s good to experiment” Mammy!

How has it taken Tubridy this long to realise how detested he is? He must be dimmer than I thought.

RTE will definitely go down the woke road, the presenter (whoever he/she/they is) will be even more useless than Tubridy and the show will be pulled after one season. With a bit of luck.

I wonder if the BBC/ITV/C4/GB News have poached Tubridy - RTE will just have to pay higher salaries to the remaining 'stars' to retain the talent. 😂

Panti Bliss, and at least it’d be a laugh. Was very entertaining on DWTS

Not a hope. He'd be too risky.

Also, really don't think he'd be interested in long commitment of every Friday evening live from Sep-May and also all the prep and research that goes with it.

His own pre-recorded short season show suits him better,

I could see maybe Deirdre O'Kane getting a shot if she was interested.

I doubt he would go for it. LLS audience is far too parochial for him.

It needs a complete revamp and get away from the sh*te Irish "celebrities" they have on. Honestly it's like they do the rounds of the RTE canteen on a Wednesday afternoon looking for guests. That and the pure misery guest/GAA guest that fill in the other slot.

My issue with the LLS in particular is that it thrives on bad news. Every personal struggle, tragedy, mental health issue, disability etc is trotted out and explained ad nausem.

It reinforces popular consensus instead of challenging it, which is what Gay Byrne was famous for.

Gay Byrne and Pat Kenny used to have better international guests.

Any time I tune into the LLS, it's always C list celebrities from Irish soaps and reality programmes mixed with inevitable sob stories that are not remotely suitable for a Friday night entertainment show.

Those dancing Gardai during Covid, well that was it for me. A new low was reached.

And the party political broadcasts from politicians. Not suitable for an entertainment show.

The main problem for the LLS was Gay Byrne. Say what you want about him, he was a broadcasting genius. It was his show, he produced it and had his tight-knit production team who knew exactly what he wanted. It should have stopped when he did. Toy Show apart (Gay didn’t want it originally), no one has come close to replacing him. Pat Kenny was ok, but he’s way better on the radio.

RTE should now axe the show. Put a completely rebranded show on at that time.

That's the greatest post I've read on here in years!

    LOL

The issue is never the issue; the issue is always the revolution.

The Entryism process: 1) Demand access; 2) Demand accommodation; 3) Demand a seat at the table; 4) Demand to run the table; 5) Demand to run the institution; 6) Run the institution to produce more activists and policy until they run it into the ground.

Honestly Tommy has started going down this route on a number of occasions.

    I would say the opposite.

But it needs to be real serious stuff like actual political stuff from experts.

Not some Z list celebrity telling some personal sob story type serious. None of that torture porn.

Not a hope they’d get Dara. I agree it will be a woman, I’d bet on Claire Byrne if I was a betting man. I don’t think they’ll shelve it. Too big a brand for RTE.
