Bill came in at 260 for the two months with Energia.

We're still around €600 in credit with them.

No gas,4 bed townhouse with just myself and herself. We did make an effort to use less electricity like only boiling the amount your need and dishwasher went from 2.30hr cycle to 30 mins, sometimes dry clothes on radiator/in front of fire etc.

It's not something I ever really kept an eye too closely on but with the energy credit and reduced use its working out grand.

People wholly reliant on electricity seem to be screwed. We have oil to heat the house and an open fire.Bought ten small bags of coal in mid October and they will last til end of January, fill the oil tank once a year/18 months if even.

It's crazy to hear of posters getting bills near a grand in brand new houses.

They should still save a fair bit with no gas standing charge which keeps going through all those lovely warm months

sometimes the long cycle on dishwasher etc is less energy usage than the 30 mins one

That's still high for just 2 people with oil and a fire

    then that makes zero sense

what did you have the thermostat set to, it should only have been on for a few hours a day max

I hope he pays rent (and his share of the bills). Shouldn't be a problem for him if he owns as Tesla!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,338 ✭✭✭HBC08

    I've no gas either.

130 a month in winter with the current prices isn't really a problem, especially as the government is paying it.

Also,as is often the case she is a cold creature and works from home a lot.

Between coal, oil, electricity and government credit our energy bills in the depths of winter are working out about €100 a month.

Zero except electricity in the summer or if we put on the gas patio heater (which costs a fortune and 2 bbqs would be equal to a months costs of running the house in winter which is mental)

My gas bill was absolutely nuts. I’ve basically stopped heating the house and have taken to wearing coats indoors sometimes.

I know it’s the war in Ukraine but the general cost of living here just isn’t reasonable and while the few quid here and there being credited to your electricity bill is handy, they didn’t do anything to mitigate this or protect against it.

The fact that we’ve no LNG terminal was a political choice. We have literally no alternative sources of gas other than via the UK which is a mess and we’ve no gas storage at all. It’s an insane position to have put ourselves in by choice and NIMBYism.

We’ve also made far far too slow progress on off shore wind. Endless talk and false starts.

The sense I get in Ireland is we’ve no contingency planning for anything and it’s a bit scary tbh. We drift along basically having been extremely lucky, so far.

3 bed semi, 2 adults 2 kids, 1 EV charged at home ~50% of the time.

Electricity 67 days to 3rd Jan: 647 units Day, 834 units night (day / night meter) €260.33. On Energia's fixed EV plan @ ~23.2c / unit day and 6.7c / unit night. Have to fork over €57 after govt credit. That rate is gone end of March though and would be ~€200 more at the current rate!😲

Gas ~2 months to 5th Jan: €152, Flogas 35% discount. Covered by remaining credit from €220 welcome credit from end March last year. €14 of that credit left so will have to 'actually' pay for Jan - Mar in practicality.

Often use an open fire winter evenings though so there was quite a bit of additional cost for that!

The elec bill for the most recent period compared to last year:

    2021: used 653 units costing ~€190

    2022: used 496 units costing ~€250

So we reduced consumption by ~25% but paid ~33% more. Overall will be okay though with the govt credit.

Our two big gas bills last year though arrived in Feb (~400) and May (~350) so we're not looking forward to the equivalent bills this year

    4 Bed Semi(2 adults 1 child)

    Electricity(12 Nov 22 - 10 Jan 23) - 780units - 309.66 ( works out at 49.56 after 200 euro credit and EI 50 euro credit)

    Gas(6 Oct 22 to 5 Dec 22) - 164m³ - 253.27 euro

Both were actual usage, i.e. current or previous werent estimates

Was out of contract year before last and before switching to Electric Ireland last Feb, bills for Dec 21/Jan 22 were 660euro gas and 570euro electricity, hence we cut down usage significantly from last Feb:

    Cut down on electricity consumption:

    • disconnecting anything in the house on standby( lots of retro computer/consoles gear, CRTs etc. :) )
    • replacing appliances(Fridge, media centre)
    • Using Steam deck(15-30W handheld gaming PC) instead of gaming on my 500W Gaming rig
    • replaced the last few non LED bulbs to LEDs
    • reconfiguring intranet to remove 1 or 2 routers/switches
    • replaced kids 2.1 system for computer with 2 5W speakers
    • using the small oven rather than the large one mostly
    • using air fryer more
    • Kettle boiled for tea is just enough for the number of cups

    Cut down on gas usage:

    • barely turned on since October and only 2-4 hours a day, house is warmish rather than warm.
    • Moved kid to warmer room

Using coal in open fire to at least keep one room warm(and comfortable knowing cost is fixed as bought a tonne of coal in November)

Dreading gas in Feb, probably going to be 450-500euro, and also when current plan ends in Feb.

Total cost since Feb 18th 22:

Electricity: 1145euro (495 with gov & EI credit)

    Gas: 570euro

Average(except last years Christmas bills) for the past 10 years were about 330 each for gas/electricity for Nov-Jan

1300 Gas bill today , they estimated my usage at 4 times my actual use . WTF

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,553 ✭✭✭lmimmfn

You should read the meter asap and send it to them before the money will be taken

  • Registered Users Posts: 364 ✭✭morceli

Yep did that right away, they say it will go off my next bills but no way i'll be letting them take that money

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,918 ✭✭✭circadian

Bill was 46 from October to December after the 200 quid government payment. Installed solar and an ASHP during the year but noticably the usage for the same time period went from 1500kw/h last year to 500kw/h this year. We'd easily be hitting a 600 quid bill based on that.

December/January will be the litmus test with the ASHP.

Electricity bill was ok but our gas bill is nearly €400. That's a massive hike on last year, even taking into account the cold snap before Christmas.

    Around 19C usually.

The rads barely got warm during that time, and usually for a short time in the morning and evening, which is fine. Most of the time they felt cold.

got my one month December bill for gas and electricity

€439, including electricity €200 credit... so it would have been €639 for one month.

my corresponding bill for this time last year was €361

2 years ago it was €315

3 bed semi D approx 900 sq ft, 6 occupants

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,476 ✭✭✭monkeybutter

its hard to know how you would even manage to use that much leccy and gas

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,476 ✭✭✭monkeybutter

is there a point there were the heating is switched off?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,918 ✭✭✭circadian

Environmental controls might need adjustment. 3pm has a massive jump in usage while at the same time the outside temperature was at peak. Unless that's in hourly blocks and between 3.30 and 4 the temp dropped significantly. Still, environmental controls are often the source of problems of ASHP.

300 square metre dormer, detached, rural setting. A2W, UFH.

all figures below were obtained using actual meter readings, no estimates. Very little control on getting consumption any lower!

    Nov & Dec 2020: 3833 units, 594euro

    Nov & Dec 2021: 2942 units, 696euro

    Nov & Dec 2022: 2819 units, 965euro (with 200 Govt credit it becomes 765euro)

    Smart HH Day (8-17 & 19-23) 587

    Smart HH Night (23-8) 165

    Smart HH Peak (17-19) 121.0

total usage 873 units for electricity

Gas was an estimated reading, and they estimate about 33% higher than actual usage. ill leave sending an actual reading until the next bill so that i can get a lower bill next time.

yeah the electricity usage is definitely worrying, but there was an increased usage due to christmas decorations, plug in oil heater in cold weather etc.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,476 ✭✭✭monkeybutter

most likely its just total energy use, a smart meter keeps a track of usage

so putting on the oven for dinner etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,614 ✭✭✭Feisar

€300, normally around €200 this time of the year but with a three year old and a baby the washing machine is forever on.

First they came for the socialists...

Gas was €523 - I thought it might be more. We're in a 1990s built detached house - 1300 odd square feet. I've been wearing woolly jumpers at home and only turning on the heating when we just couldn't stand it any more. Around Christmas I had it on a bit more. Hoping for no more cold snaps. I'm near retirement so not a chance I can afford to retrofit the house to any degree that would save decent money.

Electricity with the €200 was €182 which I can live with.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,555 ✭✭✭Irish_rat

    Electricity 317 credit

Gas 205. Was 105 was year

Haven't turned my gas on since I saw that, mental. And I didnt use it nowhere near as much

I've been in the house at 14c and it's not too bad once you wrap up

Two bed end of terrace with 2 adults and 1 five year old.

Electricity - Actually in credit to the tune of €254

Gas - A different story altogether:

    Jan 2022 - €86.37

    Jan 2023 - €195.98

September/October was €72.05 so this is a bit hard to swallow.

72.05 seems way too low for Nov/Dec - was it maybe underestimated? (Which would cause a catchup next time the meter is read).

  • Registered Users Posts: 704 ✭✭✭Cushtie

EI electricity bill for Nov Dec just in. €850 before the govt discount.

New house, Air to water, UFH etc. No oil, coal, logs etc.

A bit shocked. Just moved in Aug so first winter in. Bit shocked to be honest. Noticed on the bill the day rate and night rate are the same at 39 cent, that can't be right?

Must ring them tomorrow to query that.

Must see if the Heatpump is configured correctly aswell.

Absolutely crazy for a new build. Was the heat pump commissioned? What are your thermostats at? Because that bill seems nuts.

Also, is there a chance previous bills were estimated and you're paying the difference now? I know you said you only moved in during August but the heat pump could have been on for a long time prior to moving in to dry out floors etc. Just a thought.
