The point was, with the exception of some of us on boards, many customers don't give a sh1t about being able to see both.on the mete, once they get charged the old way. Loads seeming to say you can't do that because they are mixing up the technical with the real world. Both are correct in different ways but the latter don't care about the former, once they can keep roughly what they are used to, which they can.

coming back to the 'D\N Smart meter' malarkey (RM107 with MCC02 configuration)

anyone know if this Market Change Request 1225 is going to be implemented from Q3 this year? (I've emailed ESBN!)

Well in a controversial discovery, apparently Energia for one WILL let you continue on your existing day/night tariff after you move to a smart meter.

Had this conversation with a fella on the Facebook group today and he posted screenshots of his bill.

He gets day, night and peak tariffs, but is billed for day & peak together on his pre-existing day/night tariff rates, and for night units at his night rate.

No new tariff, no need to change to 24hr or smart tariff. Obviously if he changed provider then he would have to go 24hr/smart but for now, he's the first example that I've found of someone with a smart meter and a (albeit pre-existing) day/night tariff.

I have heard of hidden tariffs too with EI.

But he has essentially given up his ability to switch to other day night providers. And can only choose smart plans (yes there is 24 smart plans but arent mcc01 plans, and not every supplier does them)

True, but it crapped on my long held belief that the 2 were incompatible.

They are incompatible, he's not on a day night tariff. He's on a smart tariff, that emulates a day night. He can't choose a day night from anyone else.

And the all important MCC has been changed, meaning he can never go back to MCC02. It's all fun and games for him until he goes to change supplier. Essentially he's on a smart tariff dressed up to look like a day night tariff, which is all fun and games until end of contract! He is not on a day night tariff. I've seen the screenshot of the bill and it clearly states MCC16!

But the point is he never signed up to a new tariff. His existing day/night RATES have carried over, regardless of whether it's a smart tariff emulating a day/night one.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 7,017 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

He did sign up to a new tariff, with rates the same as his day night, Its still a new tariff, He can only choose smart plans from now on.

What were the rate like anyway? EV rate? standard D/N?

He insists there was no new tariff or extension to term etc.

    Standard day/night I think, 48/23ish with a % discount.

A post here #2372 might be relevant for people to know how easy it is to get stuck on a smart plan without knowing. https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058235650/switching-electric-gas-providers#latest

energia's discount has been about 10% since last Sept/Oct. Contract is basically just discount period anyway.

Say if there was 6 months left on his discount. And he was put onto the same rates as his DN but on a smart tariff (MCC016, thats a smart tariff) with a discount period of 6 months, theres the no change in rates, and no extension of term. But still a change in tariff at heart.

    Current smart rates :

    And Current D/N rates

I get what you're saying, but the fact remains. He moved from a day/night meter to a smart meter and he's still paying the same rates at the same times as before.

    Until end of contract,

It NOT a day night tariff. His MCC02 is gone, and irrevocably gone. He can never get a day night tariff again. What he has is a smart tariff in a day night frock. In 6 months when he goes to renew or change his contract and finds that hes on MCC16 and not MCC02.

I've tidied up your post. If you want to rant about transgenderism, I suggest you do so on another forum.

    Apologies.

To be clear on the point I was making, the MCC16 which the customer is now on, means he can no longer get day night tariffs when he tries to move supplier.

    fyi, from ESBN today:

"The smart meter team will plan to exchange MC002 (Day\Night) meters over the coming months. You will receive a letter mid-September in advance of the exchange indicating which company (ESB Networks or contractor working on behalf of ESB Networks) will exchange your meter."

That would be right ... get it done before winter when it is most valuable to end users.

I had the same letter about my old 24hr meter a earlier this year, when the contractor got in touch to arrange the smart meter I explained how beneficial the old meter was to me financially "it spins backwards" they were very understanding and put me at the back of the list without me refusing one. If you want to hold onto your meter try doing the same, just don't refuse one or you won't get the FIT.

Theres not many DN Meters about that can spin backwards.

I was referring to my meter, I was saying to the op if he wanted to keep his day/night to do as I did.

I wonder how long the deemed fit will continue as they start to roll out the SM.

As it's not available on the old 24hr meters

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,275 ✭✭✭con747

I would reckon they will do their best to change them asap due to most on here and others being paid for thin air basically. I'll be putting them off till the very last with my old one. I don't see why 24hr meters that don't go in reverse are not allowed FIT though until the smart roll out gets to them, they are being denied FIT just to get them to accept a smart meter.

so this new smart meter is configured for D\N metering so I'm assuming those of us who will get our current D\N meter replaced with one of these will continue to benefit from any available D\N tariffs (sadly an increasely threatened species!) but won't be metered for CEG payment purposes, but will have metered data on ESBN's data portal. or do I have that wrong?

I have no idea about how it works i'm afraid. This is the post I was referring to earlier so be very careful with the smart meter. Post #2372 https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058235650/switching-electric-gas-providers/p80

woah, cheers for that! hmm, so once this new D\N smart meter is installed, you are implicitly accepting metering and 'activating' the smart meter?

I think that chap was caught out because he had access to the smart data features and when he went to switch provider they told him because of that he can only get a smart plan afaik. So if you get the new smart day/night that's being rolled out in the Autumn don't access any of the smart features on it without getting firm confirmation your not going to end up like him if you change provider.

I got my "smart meter activated" mail from electric ireland last April from electric ireland (after its install last august). I set up an esb networks account to view the data but nothing appeared. I recently had solar installed and was still able to switch to flogas 24hr plan (from a 24hr plan) (nc6 form was received just after the switch at the start of May)

Since then my esbnetworks account is showing export data and in the last week showing import data.

All while still on an old 24hr plan.

It'll be interesting to see what happens next may when my term is up. I thought the main thing was once you go on a smart plan there was no going back.
