That logo reveal gag… I’m in, Greta (who is two for two so far as far as I’m concerned)

I tried to delete my thread on this but can't seem to 🤷‍♀️

Anyway.... I hated Lady Bird, loved Little Women. No idea what to expect from this one, but that teaser is fantastic.

    That is an interesting teaser

So strange. 2001 homage to start things off. Still, it'll get people talking.

Now will Aqua profit from this film in any way? Or will there be a remixed or slow version of their song?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,920 ✭✭✭✭Dial Hard

Studio couldn't secure the rights to it, apparently.

Which is ironic, considering Aqua didn't have Mattel's permission to release the song in the first place.

I bet they're just pretending they don't have it so when it's actually included everyone will be delighted.

Great trailer, very excited about this. Saw a Tweet that showed the very first Barbie doll which came in the black and white swimsuit

    Ken again! 😄

I can't wait for this. It's either going to be amazing or pure trash.

I still have no idea what to make of this: just another exercise in Brand Management Cinema, or subversive genius? Both, probably, with a larger aftertaste of the former ... but it's certainly commiting to the bit.

watched starship troopers again at the weekend. hopefully something similar to that !!

I love that its going up against Nolan's Oppenheimer at the box office. Some people are just going to lose their minds that week.

I’d honestly rate Greta Gerwig above Nolan in my own personal ‘great modern directors’ pantheon, so there’s going to be an interesting weekend this summer :)

    New short trailer.....

The more posters I see, the more insane this cast is becoming!

A thought occurs: is This generation's Speed Racer?

I'm not entirely sure western audiences can or want, to handle live action cartoons. Though it's a stronger pre-existing brand mind you.

    Ach, you would, lol 😂

My understanding of the basic plot is that Barbie is exiled from BarbieLand so I'd assume that happens early on and the vast majority of those other Barbie and Kens will just be in scenes like we see in the trailer, where she's waving at people on the street or at the beach or similar. Maybe the occasional scene of what's happening in BarbieLand while Margot Barbie is in the real world.

I can't see that entire cast having legitimate speaking roles in the film, right?

I hope it plays the real world scenes like The Brady Bunch Movie and A Very Brady Sequel. Like they're all playing it deadly serious.

100% track record vs a not 100% track record - smaller sample size though 😁

Seriously though, I think both Lady Bug and Little Women are genuinely outstanding films. It’d take a rare director indeed to convince me to go to see a Barbie film, but here we are!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

I think this film might be lurking in the grass over your 100% track record. If this is "just" Brand Management and nothing else I could see a bit of a Gerwig backlash incoming from those expecting something "more". Reality of Hollywood today is this might be the film she needed to make to allow <something else> happen. It's kinda how things have gone.

their advertising campaign has been a spectacular success online it seems. no fear going up against oppenheimer either. really looking forward to seeing it to be honest

The latest trailer delves much deeper into the plot.

Getting a Brady Bunch plot point

A belief in gender identity involves a level of faith as there is nothing tangible to prove its existence which, as something divorced from the physical body, is similar to the idea of a soul. - Colette Colfer

Bit of Elf in there as well with the travelling. And it has Will Ferrell.

And Barbie Girl at the end of the trailer. When talking about the album.

When they were being fingerprinted and since was reminded of Elf, I was wondering what film was it that Santa or maybe was an elf had a star shaped fingerprint?

I actually laughed out loud several times watching that trailer. I am genuinely getting very excited about this.

The hype over this remains baffling to me. I'm still totally confusticated about this; though some of the gags did make me laugh.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,931 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

I genuinely have no idea why I'm so excited for it. I have no affiliation with Barbie, and I had polar opposite reactions to Gerwig's previous 2 films (hated Ladybird, loved Little Women) so it's not even like I'm just excited for new Gerwig. I think, for me anyway, what it boils down to is that it just looks like it could be a fun time in the cinema. I assume it's the feeling people who like Marvel films get every 6 months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87,574 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

I'm getting Tim Burton vibes as in Willy Wonka, Alice in Wonderland, Edward Scissorhands mixed with Truman Show but damn I'm excited for it

Ryan Gosling seems to be being Ryan Gosling in this rather then Ken, he seems to be laughing at the film in the film.

Yeah I kinda felt he was off compared to Margot Robbie's sincerity

I didn't think that about Gosling, he just seems like he's being Ken, tbh. He's a little bit arrogant, very sure of his role in life, at least as far as life in Barbie land goes. I'd assume they're just playing up the comedy aspect for the trailer and not giving too much away.

From that new trailer, it doesn't look like it'll be taking itself too seriously outside the Barbie world.

I did have a laugh at the dudes doing the jump across aisles while they were trying to catch her 🙂

A headline that basically speaks for itself. In case anyone was wondering if the sets were real?

"Barbie film required so much pink paint it contributed to worldwide shortage"

This looks brilliant and that it might fit into the genre of movies trying to decipher what's real and what isn't

Only gripe is Margot Robbie looks too old for the part reminding me of Diana Ross in "The Wiz"

Continuing this film's weird trend of headlines: it has been banned in Vietnam cos a doodle seen in the trailer looked too close to the disputed area in South China Sea, Vietnam not liking the implication from this crayon drawing 🤭 ...

😳 I think you could not find a better Barbie than her !! She is only 33 (and a very fresh 33 at that)

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,931 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

Literally can't imagine anyone else doing it.

I shudder at the thought of the previous planned version with Amy Schumer.

I know the Barbie v Oppenheimer things were mostly just people having fun but I found it hilarious that someone asked Nolan if he'd seen Barbie yet and he just answered "No" in a kind of grumpy way.

Meanwhile Robbie and Gerwig were posting pictures of them with cinema tickets beside the posters for Oppenheimer, Mission Impossible, and Indiana Jones. I think Tom Cruise did the same but with Barbie instead of his own film.

Oppenheimer definitely the least fun of the summer blockbusters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,900 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Cruise is the ultimate pro on the red carpet, However I do believe him when he say he will watch both on the same day.

He has them in the right order too I think myself.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,931 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

I mean he's clearly a cult leader, but I believe nobody loves movies as much as Tom Cruise loves movies.

Side note - My local cinema has 5 showing of Barbie on sale since last week for opening day. 4 in their fancy old fashioned screen, and 1 in their biggest screen. There's lots of tickets sold for all 5 showings already. They've only got Oppenheimer in their other fancy recliner screen for 1 showing, and nobody has bought tickets yet.

I don't think anyone really thought Oppenheimer would outsell Barbie though.
