IIRC Meany had an option of much more appearances in TNG (remember that he was in Encounter at Farpoint) but didn't want to be locked to a sci-fi show.

I think, for a bit character in a non serialised show, he did fantastically well. Between having a wife, child, entire episode centred around his history in the Cardassian war.

Showrunners must really have liked him (in particular Berman) and I mean I think having him as the everyman character was a sealer for getting Ira Behr back to run DS9

I think O'brien must have suffered from PTSD and maybe letting anyone who has been had that and who has had counselling work at Transporters first is a way of getting them back out there working. Not that all woukd be PTSD sufferers but a lot maybe.

I think I remember Way of the Warrior once being described as DS9's second pilot. Here in Season 4 we get:

    • A new theme
    • A new intro,
    • Sisco gets a new look
    • DS9 is armed to the teeth
    • we get Worf,
    • and for a short while the Klingons are reformatted into a Trek-villian in a move that almost calls back to the TOS days.

It worked for me. During Season 3 DS9 had started to transition away from the shadow of TNG, with the introduction of the Defiant & Dominion, while at the same time Voyager's disappointing Season 1 had been aired. I wasn't particularly happy with the state of Trek at the time, but that would change with Way of the Warrior. DS9 had become awesome, and had solidly become my post-TNG Trek show of choice until it finished.

Yeah, I had almost given up on DS9 at this point. Then holy **** it got good.

I just watched the episode where they went in search of the bathleth though. Not great, but still ok.

I’m enjoying Quark more this time round as well.

Right, I’m on to series 5.

Keiko, Kira and Miles are loving together. There are massages.

    Worf is singing.

I don’t remember any of this. I may never have seen these episodes before.

    It's all Julian's fault

I know I'm in the minority. But I really disliked her character. For me she was too dominant. For example Chakotay too often had no purpose. Janeway micromanaged every thing. I think the show suffered as a result. Especially in the early seasons.

Whereas with DS9 there's a lot more screen time with the other characters.

Sisko didn't micro manage which allowed space for the other characters to do other things, which also allowed Sisko character to do other things.

TNG feels like it has a smaller main cast. Perhaps mimicking the TOS. The early TNG seasons are very different to the latter ones.

DS9 feels like it has a larger cast of main characters from the start.

They have a very different vibe I think it's not that useful to compare them. I think there was more room for an O'Brien character in DS9. You don't need two chiefs in TNG.

O’Brien was more of a recurring character in TNG, he wasn’t really in the main cast.

With DS9 the main cast and the recurring characters are bigger.

    It's a great series.

It called it right moving from episodic to story arcs. Now SNW is calling it right by moving back.

The characters were all terrific. All.

Why trek lost its bottle and went prequel wise I don't know.

Because a lot of Trek is a star ship facing terrible odds without star fleet to help. I know DS9 was a different model but a lot of the time it was on the defiant or simply space station vs the rest

Thus what is advantage to going backwards?

    Prequels box you in

It's a shame that Avery brooks seems to have retired. He did seem out of it though when interviewed by Shatner

Yeah fed up with prequels. Move forward. Stop robbing the past. Create your own vision. Other than that SNW is doing a lot of things right.

DS9 was great though. Ferengi commando raid.

True, only Discovery post season 3 and Picard have ventured into unknown territory. If the Seven of Nine etc series gets green lit (looking unlikely the longer it is left), really want to see what the state of play of the galaxy is.

Of course now we have the problem that all of Trek is boxed in by the events in Discovery. It skipped so far ahead, it ruined a lot of possibilities.

I suggest a second shower scene where it's all a dream and we start over.

I wish. I’m seriously questioning if I’m going to watch anymore Disco.

What no not at all. Someone just needs to take the first two words away from Discovery and Ta-da. Problem solved.

The first series might get a pass then but the rest would still be bad.

It's like a reverse Enterprise, although its worst was still better than Discovery

I just stopped considering Discovery as canon a long time ago. One of the millions of other possible universes are welcome to it...

I remember being furious at the time. In the last series, I just wanted a story related to the war and not a holodeck episode. Or a past life Dax episode. Or a Ferengi episode
