"Preparing for war!" This short social media post by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) 80th Group Army generated over 300,000 thumbs-up in 12 hours on Friday, amid high morale among Chinese soldiers ahead of the 95th anniversary of the founding of the PLA and escalating tensions across the Taiwan Straits.

Nothing unusual there Army's are always preparing for war but China has warned that Pelosi going to Taiwan is going to cause big trouble.

    So what does she do...

    This might not end well.

Clearly one war is not enough for the Americans and their backers. They are determined to ignite a second conflict this time in the Pacific. If President Biden was a good president, he would order that US Air Force plane to turn around and bring. Nancy pelosi back home.

She absolutely should go. Pandering to these regimes accounts for a lot of the problems the West is now burdened with. They are adversaries, not partners.

Someone is going to lose face now. If Pelosi backs down it makes an already weak US government look even weaker. Iv'e a feeling Xi isn't as stupid as Putin and will hold back from an invasion even if Pelosi visits. Interesting times because if it kicks off in that region we really are on the verge of WW3.

The chinese can throw their weight around and land grab whatever they like, but only the yanks have the size and power to be able to say no, that's not right. Pelosi is a clown but the yanks are right. The carrier battle group and some well chosen air exercises in international airspace are completely appropriate.

Currently unverified so believe it if you wish apparently China has just closed the Taiwan straight and are in the process of conducting live fire exercises in the region.

China have their economic table set across Asia and Africa for decades to come.

Xi isn't going to risk all that over Taiwan, barring some catastrophic economic collapse where they need to boost morale at home.

It may only be half the size of Ireland but Taiwan would be a hellish invasion for the Chinese.

Support needless provocation, or the neoliberals will call you an appeaser.

I hope all who beat the drum for war will one day gain personal and up-close experience of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,694 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

She seems to have stopped off in Honolulu, good old Nancy never waste an opportunity. She must have got wind of the Chinese media asking for the plane to be shot down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

We went to war because an old woman came to talk - honestly how dare she, launch the nukes.

    Neoliberals went out with Dubya.

There's no reason for Pelosi not to visit Taiwan. If Taiwan wanted to be part of communist China they could have a free vote to join them. Clearly they don't wish so, understandably. Those wanting war over Pelosi's visit are on the mainland, and their useful idiots elsewhere.

It's unlikely to come to that of course, but don't make the same mistake that a lot have made with Putin and Russia.

They aren't like us. Very different political systems, different attitudes to the lives and rights of citizens and especially soldiers (expendable assets), and they are most definitely playing the long game.

You can't judge their motivations or predict their responses by what we in the West would do/deem acceptable.

Sure, their constituency might have no care for 'freedom of speech' they may only care about their own interests.

I read that apparently Flight Radar 24 have blocked people from following her flight if this is true and you want to follow the progress of her aircraft then ADSB exchange claim they don't block or filter flight's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

I could see why that might be a bit of a security risk

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,103 ✭✭✭fly_agaric

If Trumpy or another Republican ghoul was doing a visit, I really feel OP and a few others posting would be singing their praises for being "strong men", the Chinese "don't like it up em" etc.

When it is Pelosi on the US's "Blue" Political Football Team that might be doing something pretty much just confirming the post WW2 US policy, we have wails about these reckless war mongers etc etc. etc. Cynical of me?🤷‍♀️

ah yes bend the knee every time a dictatorship wills it definitely gonna end well. Appeasement is always a great idea!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,985 ✭✭✭beachhead

Not an unusual broadcast. The chinese navy is constantly threatening the Philippines and Vietnam claiming "rights" to the sea and territories in the area.Good to see the usual apologists lining up here.

All China does is steal and try to knock off everyone else's ideas and tech. They invent and create nothing themselves. Which is why they are, and will always be, light years behind the United States militarily, and they know it.

Another neanderthal regime threatening a smaller democratic neighbour

According to Sabina Higgins surrender talks should begin immediately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,733 ✭✭✭Nermal

Spare us the utter twaddle about democracy and freedom. Here's what 'appeasement' really looks like.

Tbh I've a feeling the US is aiming for a war/ complete breakdown in relations so they can default on their debt..

Think its more a general shift in Western policy. The West is done with the softly softly approach to governments like China. It hasnt worked.

The war in Ukraine has really sparked a change with Western worlds attitudes to oppressive governments.

Not a chance USA would let Taiwan fall to China. The semi conductor industry is far to valuable to keep us all going.

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

The west has become weak and woke, if it goes up against China it will be in for a shock.

He is a Good President. Certainly compared to the clown that came before him.

Nancy Polosi is a great Woman. I hope she does visit Taiwan.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

You believe two nations leaders having a meeting is appeasement, yet cowering down to the demands of a bully is not?

We should defend our way of life to an extent that any attempt on it is crushed, so that any adversary will never make such an attempt in the future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,227 ✭✭✭Thinkingaboutit

Silly Chicom stuff. They're utterly dependent on imported food and energy and the PLA navy remains subpar. Russia is self reliant for food and energy although their navy is increasingly marginal. Republic of China-Taiwan has been preparing for invasion for 70 years. Their military record is abysmal, maybe taking a glacier from India but suffering enormous casualties against Vietnam in border confrontations in the 80s. Their little emperor soldiers from one child families are not up to much. Large PRC companies like Huawei follow US sanctions on Russia for obvious reasons. This is just the shrill sabre rattling they love to indulge in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,611 ✭✭✭Corben Dallas

Pelosi will def visit Taiwan, she has made it a mission to do this before she leaves office.

The West has had enough pandering to the rantings of Putin and Xi. On Ukraine they say China is watching with interest re. Taiwan, we have not been found wanting. The pasting the Russian army has received by determined Ukrainians defending their homeland (Russia has already given up on taking Kiev and are trying to salvage something they can call a win in the Donbas) will hopefully have China thinking twice about pulling something in Taiwan.

They would get a swift kick up the ass if Taiwan homelanders and a few US Carrier fleets respond to Chinese aggression. The Chinese can probably count on Australia and all of South East Asia get involved against them as well.

Its probably time to abandon the One China policy, because this face saving mechanism afforded to them, they seem to think they and claim territory all the way to the disputed Paracel islands, the Spratly islands(< China has no legitimate claim to these) and all the way up to the shores of Australia.

So what your saying with that is they should just appease all then since they ve done it with the Saudis?

    Nonsense.

America's goal is to cause trouble and sell weapons....to think that there are people who believe that America would risk it's very existence for Taiwan 😂

The Americans might have seen sense and canceled the visit to Taiwan there is no mention of it on this official statement about the trip to the Pacific region.

They won’t mention it for security reasons, tbh I’d have expect her to have been and gone and only met with senior politicians before it’s announced

For historical context, in the time immediately proceeding the Chinese intervention in the Korean war there were similar warnings from their state mouthpieces (Korean War - Max Hastings). Korea has been since Imperial times a country China deemed within its sphere of influence, likewise Taiwan. Perhaps they are bluffing or not, but once a certain momentum has begun it might become difficult for the powers to disengage before a conflict starts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,732 ✭✭✭weisses

She got wind of the fact that the plane needs kerosine to make it to taiwan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 515 ✭✭✭TheTruth89

Yeah cause it's not like they are threatening to attack nations around em are they? Then there's the belt and road initiative...poor auld China... It's always the pesky war mongering west isn't it ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,116 ✭✭✭archer22

Taiwan is internationally recognised as a part of China...as for "the pesky war mongering west" thats exactly what they are.

Not only has the "pesky war mongering west" attacked and occupied parts of China, but also they have left a trail of mass slaughter and destruction in the nations on China's southern borders, starting with the Philippines, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia etc

How would the US be risking their very existence? China is not ideologically driven anymore, and the leadership will not want to lose all their benefits/money/status, so the chance of China engaging in a WMD exchange is very very slight.

The US has too much invested in Taiwan. They're not going to back down over it. Any war would be conventional in nature, and between the US/China, the US is better equipped to profit from such a situation. If anything, China is the weakest, simply because any war would exaggerate the problems they're having internally/socially.

Weak governance yet again from team Biden.

You never take a backwards step against a bully.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 515 ✭✭✭TheTruth89

Thats human nature either you take there stuff or they ll do that to you, believe me if those countries had the ability back then they d have done far worse to the West and its people. Ironically you are defending China for trying to do the exact thing to Taiwan that you are condemning the west for 🤣

Taiwan is only recognized as a part of China largely due to the bully boy tactics of China, Taiwan doesn't want anything to do with China.

First rule of negotiation- never make a threat that you’re not prepared to carry out. I guess you could read it two ways- Threat of Nancy going to Taiwan vs Chinas threat of hell unleashed as a result. It might be that they’ve both decided behind the scenes not to rattle each other’s cages anymore on this incident.

But you’re right- appeasement just doesn’t work any more-how many countries will be force-ably taken over? How many “incursions” is too many? Is there such a thing as a red line not to be crossed or is that too limiting when it’s crossed?

The old tactics of negotiation don’t appear to work any more and the West hasn’t developed an alternative playbook - there’s too many dictatorships and despots around who don’t care about diplomacy- China uses diplomacy when it’s convenient but then accuses countries of interfering with internal affairs when it doesn’t. We know Putin has the predatory instincts of a pedophile so no point trying to negotiate anything with him- he’s beyond reform or redemption and has long passed the capacity of trust.

Agreements are broken before the ink has dried; we tethered our economic bows to Chinas cheap labour and lack of workers rights manufacturing capabilities and were stuck with that now, but we’re still allowing China to buy up precious natural resources, place 3rd world countries in massive debt in return for a super highway road that goes nowhere or simply allow them into our countries so they can steal genetically modified crop seeds that took billions to develop like in America - and all the time, China hides behind “cultural understanding” initiatives which makes it much harder to call their bluff- they use cultural understanding, appearing friendly and interested in developing trust, as a weapon to push their own agendas. They are, quite rightly as you say, bullies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,116 ✭✭✭archer22

For centuries China tried to isolate itself from the world (apart from some honest trading), the great wall was built to keep the world out. They also once built a great ocean going fleet to explore...and promptly burned it when they found out what was out there!.

They only eventually interacted with the world when it became obvious the world was never going to leave them alone.

The history of the Philippines is a good example of the lack of interest China had in "taking there stuff" unlike the west. The Philippines has existed forever just a few hundred miles off the Chinese coast and has never been invaded by China...The nations that invaded the Philippines came from the other sides of the globe, Spain and the USA.

It’s a nice history lesson but what has that got to do with where we are now? For starters, most Chinese probably don’t know the half of their rich history because their god like leader has decided what they should learn instead. So to them all that matters is now.

The future of the world is all that matters today - the balance of power is shifting like quick-sand to the degree that we’re seeing a very clear us and them situation and fear is the over riding emotion- diplomacy international agreements and cultural understanding initiatives have all obviously failed - bullets bombs military spending and defence seem to be top of the list of priorities for a lot of countries- that’s very worrying.

We don’t have time for history lessons - China is far away from the closed land it once was- it’s keeping the west out in some respects but it’s invading other countries under the guise of cultural understanding while it steals the resources ideas and research and development of those countries ; Putin is brainwashing his people with talk of Make the USSR great again - which is nothing to do with history and everything to do with manipulation. I’d consider history if I though it could do some good but The minds of the people of these countries have been tainted by decades of indoctrination- what they are told to think, they think- North Korea is an extreme example but all dictatorships do similar in varying degrees of intensity and success.

If only we could depend on “cultural understanding” - but the culture and mindset of these countries today, bears absolutely no resemblance to that of even 50 years ago no less 500 years ago

Look forward 20 years. Putin has re-established the Soviet empire. China rules Asia with an iron fist. Liz Truss' successor has been in power for 2 decades with claims they have introduced a police state

The UK decides to get into the action and looks to rebuild its own empire, starting with you know who....

All this time the US has stood on the sidelines. Gradually becoming less significant on the international scene

Of course it won't happen. Russia's behaviour is just a blip. Taiwan? No-one really cares about an island on the other side of the World.

Or could it? Russia was moving towards democracy 2 decades ago. Before 9/11 a lot of people did not worry about the Middle East as it was someone else's problem

And yes I know it's bordering on conspiracy stuff. I know a lot of this will not happen, because fortunately the US (and indeed the UK) don't stand on the sidelines

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 515 ✭✭✭TheTruth89

What are you talking about peaceful rise its constantly trying to subvert the west and undermine small nations to its own advantage, nothing peaceful about China nor does the "Zen" society you are talking about exist

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 515 ✭✭✭TheTruth89

With the way western society is going i wouldn't be surprised we are all bark no bite even though we have a powerful bite, we live in a hugs and cuddles society that wants to try and understand and help poor China and Russia, all the while they are operating on a "**** the west" mentality.

Id rule nothing out yet and its only barely in the "conspiracy" bracket what you are saying !

Id like to see a more unified and definitive response from the west as in spell it out good and clear to nations like Russia and China if you invade x country we will defend them 100% no doubt and unshackling ourselves from rules we only seem to be following.

Whilst not only scaring the sh1te out of me with your not impossible predictions, it’s your final sentence that really stands out- I think all countries need to take more personal responsibility for their security and defence and where they don’t have the resources, to engage and collaborate with friendly countries who do and share the burden and responsibility.

Ireland should ditch its neutrality - were European ffs, we have no neutrality- we can always offer ourselves as peaceful negotiators and state our preference for a diplomatic and peaceful resolution always over conflict, but we need to get off the fence for once.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 515 ✭✭✭TheTruth89

Ireland is in a unique position where we could nearly get by without a military or very bare bones one because of our location and ties with the US and UK. But nations with real threats and close proximity with an expansionist country would do well to take the lesson the Ukraine is learning on board.

I don't see any benefit in us ditching our neutrality and IF we are going to go as far as that its NATO we should be joining...but it would have massive consequences for the nation because we would have to start fulfilling roles we currently don't and our military spending would have to increase this would take money away from places it would be better spent. For no great advantage only having a military sitting there "just incase" when it would be highly unlikely to ever be needed especially in defense.
