Yup. Pretty much. And now I am culpable for furthering it somewhat.

Well, the concept (which was shot down by editorial, as I alluded to earlier) as arrived at by Chris Claremont was that Nightcrawler's mother was Destiny and his father would be... Mystique.

As a shapechanger, Mystique would have transitioned to male for a while and been his father.

This would've introduced trans rights, gay marriages, and gay parentage and annoy loads and loads of people. In the 70s!

What we got in the end was a pared down version where Mystique and Destiny raised Rogue as "best friends". As I said, everything had to be sub textual in those days. To be clear, this is not what people are reading into texts- Claremont has been super clear for decades this is exactly what happened, and Jim Shooter, er, shot him down.

Contrast this with his current parentage, that his mother is Mystique and his father is an actual honest to god (ahem) demon named Azezal.

The entire point to Nightcrawler is everyone judges him because he looks like a demon but he has a heart of gold. This change to parentage means "no, actually, he's legit half demon, that's why he looks demonic".

EDIT: Taking you at face value, this very story has an interesting coda which displays why this type of thing is still big news to comics when it happens, and the communities they represent

It is only last year that Mystique was editorially allowed to refer to Destiny as her wife. Nearly 40 years later. People who know the history (including me) found it an extremely powerful moment.

I actually expect them to do it soon. If you've been reading the current series Mystique's only real motivation has been to get Destiny back.

Yeah you answered before my edit where I allude to it. And what an amazing run Dawn/ Reign of X has been too!

So let's get this story straight. You are not interested in this story but somehow you have had not one but two conversations with bisexual "friends" of yours since this article was published on the rte site this morning.

Did you ring your "friends " and how did you manage to get two conversations onto something your like totally not interested in?

    🤣🤣🤣🤣

Jesus. That would be a nuclear meltdown level event.

They are my cousins. We send each other messages. I sent them a link to the article joking with them about how they'll probably have a newfound interest in DC. They are both big Marvel fans. The conversation led from there.

    Hardly unusual.

Does come off a bit “cheugy” alright, H2DPB.

That checks out. Most people have that family member who sends articles and stuff with inappropriate hot takes on it looking for reactions. You usually just humour them for the sake of family and not causing a scene.

"God, Steve just sent me another 'Hey, you're bisexual, what do you think about this? LOL!' message.... sigh... YES STEVE! LOL! CAN'T BELIEVE IT WFTLMAO!.... send"

Ya, the funniest part here is that I don't believe Dunne has any particular interest in comics but would probably have been complaining about Miles Morales making the news a decade ago too.

    Same.

I have an uncle who always has little things to say to my LBGT cousins. Jokes taken right out of Chubby Brown's act.

He's humoured because if anyone says anything, the script of "Oh, it's PC gone mad" and "Everything is woke these days" comes out.

"When I was in school you could call a fella a poof and he didn't complain"

Yeah it does actually. We often make what would be considered "inappropriate" jokes to each other.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,158 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

I just treat my cousins and friends all the same, regardless of their sexual orientation. The fact that they're gay or straight has no baring on any conversation I have with them.

    But you do you bro!

This. i haven't read comics since I was a kid, what's in them today holds near zero interest for me, but whatever floats one's boat. I've watched a few of the comic book flim adaptations, but then again they're hard to avoid. 😁 Some are worth the watching, even if only as a guilty pleasure, most are not and are lowest common denominator bumns on seats script writing. At least for me. Comics I regard as childhood and adolescent fare for the most part. I get the art in some of them, but not for me tbh.

As far as the "woke" stuff goes, even when I was a kid I noticed that the lads who were still into comics in their teens and onward tended to be the quiet less socially included geeky lads. The dungeons and dragons set. Nada wrong with that either. I wouldn't be typing this on the interwebs without them. Though because of that I reckon that's why they're much more likely to be about inclusivity as a very general thing as more of them would have felt excluded themselves so feel more empathy and sympathy with those on the fringes. The school "jock" type in contrast tends to be much less about that and the average beige type could go either way, but they're easily influenced by society so follow that.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

No it doesn't, it is the opinion of discredited artist Ethan Van Sciver who makes a lot of money out of the comicsgate movement, who are more or less the alluded to 40 year olds who don't ever want anything to change. They're a group that somehow has missed that Superman is an immigrant, Spider-Man is a poor man crushed by a system, the X-Men are a minority metaphor, and so on.

    It's also not true.

Yeah I stopped watching the video when he mentioned "changes to beloved characters" while showing an image of Riri Williams in an IronMan comic, because I could smell the horseh*t coming off the video.

Things like that have always happened throughout comics history, it's not a new thing. There have been other Captain Americas other than Steve Rogers, other people taking on the mantle of Iron Man (such as Rhodey), various Thors... As comics use largely the same stable of characters for decades, they'll occasionally change things up by having a new character take over for a while to show different stories. Sometimes it's permanent, usually it's pretty fleeting, because then they can do a story where the original comes back and takes over again. Usually the other character then develops a new persona (such as Riri becoming IronHeart) if they were popular enough.

Hell, even the thumbnail of Then Vs Now is bullsh*t because the Then characters are still far more popular and prevalent than most others.

No idea who the guy in the video was before I started watching it, but it's pretty clear he's peddling nonsense.

Also, some of the best comics out there have been about outcasts or people outside of the norm. Something like The Invisibles is up there as some of the best writing out there.

    I'm mildly annoyed at:

    The headline, it's not Superman

The idea of him being physically tired

Companies pandering to the current trend. Corporations getting all hot and bothered about Pride Week. Tis all just about the dollar. If the Taliban were in charge they'd be doing the opposite.

First they came for the socialists...

He's a clone whose 'dad' (the guy who came up with the Judge system and also swore an oath of celibacy )was brought down over an affair, so it kind of makes sense he'd be programmed that way. If I remember judges werent supposed to have relationships anyway. Oddly enough in Dredd's version of Ireland , Judges can have families , also go for pints after work (and thanks to Garth Ennis, they went to real pub in Raheny , although its since been renamed https://2000ad.fandom.com/wiki/The_Green_Dolphin ) )

Ethan must be refering to his own lack of sales.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,368 ✭✭✭Ray Palmer

That is what articles are saying but it is not really true either. He is not the main Superman in the on going series of main DC continuum he is Superman Son of Kal El in that series but truly just Superboy by another means

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,246 ✭✭✭✭Dyr

The chap is so discredited that rather than winding up broke and homeless after being cancelled by the weirdo mob he went on to make millions selling his own comics. Do you think Van Sciver failed to notice or has a problem that Superman is an immigrant or that the Xman are sometimes a metaphor for minorities? 😂 I find it hard to give a **** about Super Heros and consider adults who go around wearing super hero logos etc, to be a bit soft in the head but one of the hilarious things the whole Comicsgate thing taught me was how utterly demented the comic book world is. Lads like you who just parrot whatever imaginary accusations the lunatics attached to industry make up. It's gas to me. It's always the same, fabrications and then attempts to defend them based on being so literal that you have to be retarded to actually think anyone believes you could be so obtuse.

I thought such weirdoness only existed on twitter or something. "Graphic novel sales were up 9.1%, while periodical sales declined 19.7%". 😂 "hey, everyone, American Super hero comics are doing fine based on the sales of graphic novels and Manga".

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,987 ✭✭✭conorhal

They have indeed stooped to bundling in manga with comic book sales to imply that the American comic book industry is in rude health, a glance at the Chomicron sales figures for the big two tells a rather different story...

Speaking of Chomicron and sales figures I thought I'd have a peek and see what 'Superman Son of Kal El' is doing and ..... LOL, it can't even crack the top 50, coming in at 68 with sales for issue 2 with an impressive 40,000 units.

And that by the way does not denote customer sales, those are retail orders. So we're talking about a book that will probably be warming the shelves with less hits then this thread. Gee I wonder why they might be pulling this kind of stroke of marketing desperation? Could it be that they're trying to stave off cancellation by issue 10 (if the book even makes it that far) because the geeks will buy issue one in spades, typically you see a 40% drop off by issue two and you can expect the super duper issue 5 to end up lingering in 20k region at this rate with probably less than 15k people actually reading the book. But yes, comics are selling better than ever!

If it was all about the dollar they wouldn't be doing this. Wokeness doesn't generally play well with audiences.

Good point, why the hell are they doing it so?

Trying to tell interesting stories about different types of characters while also getting some publicity and maybe a bump in a sales for a while. Y'know, the same thing comics have been doing for decades.
