limerick and cork games will be very tough and I think we may need to take something here even if just a point

that leaves Waterford at home if we could win and than Clare away

Clare will be very hard too but if we could go into that game with a minimum of 3 points than we have a fighting chance of progressing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56 ✭✭challengerbell

We have Clare before Waterford. So if we go into the Clare Game on 1 point with Waterford at home still to come we'd have a huge chance. The Clare Cork and Limerick games between eachother will decide a lot. The result of Clare v Cork round 1 immediately sets a path out of Munster for us.

2019 feels like an age ago. Would be great to get out of Munster and be competitive and see real progress.

Limerick will tell a lot this Sunday, I will head into it. I know it’s the league but Winning would give confidence to the team and us supporters.

No snide comments from RTE commentators this week about the crowd in Ennis, given there was 1000 less than turned up for the All Ireland Champions compared to the Wexford Tipp game a few weeks ago and we got the usual treatment "poor support" treatment.

Over 11,000 at the game Saturday night, good to see.

Even if there’s only 2000 people in Ennis, RTE would still call it a cauldron. ‘Nobody likes to go to Cusack Park. Hard place to get a result’. The usual!

"Clare and Wexford, always great support, always great colour, best fans in the country"

Personally, I prefer counties other than Tipperary, Cork and Kilkenny winning the All-Ireland as those 3 counties won so much in previous decades. Great hurling counties though!. However, I must say that Saturday evening's performance by Tipperary was very promising,. Tipperary are certainly back in the mix for this year's Munster and All-Ireland championships. Whether we in Clare will be, is my more immediate concern.

Tipp aren't within an asses roar of either. On right path but still way off.

Another disappointing start for the footballers.

Lets hope the hurlers continue their good run on Sunday

I'm struggling to comprehend what I saw in that 2nd half, let alone analyse it! All the same we'll take the win. Not a bad league considering we'd very realistic relegation fears at the start of it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18 Usrwastaken

Never seen a ref lose a game so fast. Need to watch it again to see what happened.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,488 ✭✭✭History Queen

I came here hoping somone else might be able to put into words what happened in the second half. Always good to come away with a win obviously... but what did I just watch?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,063 ✭✭✭newhouse87

We are on an uptrend, still way off winning liam mc but Kilkenny are going one way. They are diabolical.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,037 ✭✭✭YabaDabaDooley

That's three league wins on the spin for Tipp against the old enemy with two in Nowlan Park. Tipp were impressive enough first half probably could have been further than six in front.

Second half even before the ridiculous Tynan sending off Tipp were not firing. When Kilkenny had the three men sent off i thought Tipp were poor for about 10 mins even with the two extra men. They eventually regained some composure and finished the last 10 minutes comfortably but really not much to be taken from that second half.

Always good to win in Nowlan Park, though. Never an easy thing to do and Tipp looking good for a league final against probably Cork.

Tipperary are improving. Younger players breaking through now and over the next few years are as good as anything since the 06/07 generation of minors. Probably another 12 months before we can start to hope for extended championship campaigns into Croke Park. It's coming though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 914 ✭✭✭Ompala

Definitely struggled with 2 extra men during the second half. Kk went ultra defensive so easy to carry the ball up to near halfway with no challenges. Seemed we try to take long range points to try get Kk to not sit so deep, should probably have gone a bit closer though for shooting. Kk knew if space was there then another goal going in and they were never going to recover.

Realistically we never looked like losing it in the second half, but definitely a scenario to work on. Once Kk tired and space opened up with picked off the insurance points.

I'd agree with you re Tipp losing pace in second half. Definitely happy to see us trending upwards, early in the year though it may be.

slightly off topic, but if I thought the Tipp match had some strange goings on... the Clare/Cork match??!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 914 ✭✭✭Ompala

Yeah Tipp Kk strange Cork Clare is bonkers - only red (so far) for one of the less serious offences! Clare full back line torn apart.

Unbelievable how a post like this can be just wrong from beginning to end!

What in your opinion is wrong?

    1. You don't think we are in an uptrend?
    2. You think we can win Liam Mc this year?
    3. Kilkenny are not diabolical at the moment?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56 ✭✭challengerbell

The expectation this year can never realistically be an All Ireland given where we are starting from. Thats dreamland territory. Paddy Power currently has us at 14-1. Behind Galway and Clare at 9-1 and Kilkenny at 7-1 (obviously owing to Kilkenny and Galways easy path). Let us get back to Croke Park before talking about that.

An absolutely fantastic year for us this year is:

    • Underage success at minor and U20 (already off to a good start with the multiple teams going well in the Harty cup, Thurles winning it and going for the Croke Cup this weekend and Clonmel High School winning the B in Munster)
    • While also blooding the younger generation and infusing them into the senior team (McCarthy, Doyle, O'Farrell, Corcoran, Caesar, O'Halloran, Keller, O'Donoghue, Kenneally, Walsh, Ormond) - this is going very well so far with the previous established lads also going well - Connolly, O'Mara, Morgan, O'Connor, Morris. Theres also more to see from Bowe hopefully and Stakelum to come back. I think everyone named here is 25 years old and under. The media talking about Tipp peaking now, as if 19 or 22 year olds cant improve from where they are right now.
    • Avoid relegation - check.

    For me, this leaves:

    • Reaching and competing well in a league final.
    • Maybe winning a minor or U20 Munster.
    • Competing for and maybe making the top 3 in Munster.

That's for a fantastic year. Do better its an unreal year, do slightly worse it can still be a successful year. Depends on the manner of things.

Surely Cahill has to go if Tipp don't make it out of Munster this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 489 ✭✭Krazy gang

That would be ridiculous. And I'm from kilkenny. He's building a new team with talented youngsters and more to come in the next few years. Munster is extremely strong and 2 good teams won't get out.

If I was on the tipp co. board I'd be saying to let Cahill have at least the next 2 years and keep integrating a few young lads every season. I was very impressed with tipp on Sunday. Of course that was helped by kilkenny being so poor in the 1st half especially.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 329 ✭✭Montys return

I don't see how it's ridiculous, this is his 3rd year in charge. Sunday was a league match.

I'm interested in what Tipp people think. If they were to keep him on even if he failed to get out of Munster this year it would be the most patient Tipp have ever been with a manager in my memory.

And would be particularly interesting given the fury he provoked by staying in Waterford at the end of 2021.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 721 ✭✭✭farmerval

To my mind Cahill has little enough credit in the bank. On his watch we have had some appalling games in the round robin, 2? years ago against Waterford we were truly abysmal, last year we were poor, shocking against Cork. We were playing stone age tactics, overpassing at the back and then when a man was free the delivery forward was appalling, close your eyes stuff. When Gearoid O Connor was flying with UL Cahill played him in all the league games, gave him a stupid burden of game time, O Connor was only a shadow of himself for the championship.

In the league last year he wasted a lot of time playing lads who were never going to make it. Tactically we never mark almost anyone, which may be OK when we're going well, but when we are poor, it's shocking, our half forwards are in our half backline and suddenly the opposition half backs are sauntering up the field and scoring from distance at their ease.

The tactics in this league are better than before, maybe Herity influence, we are putting good ball in to the inside line. If this year is not better then there's no way he can stay. Four good performances in the round robin are a minimum requirement.

Congrats to thurles cbs, some win for them, 8pts down 10mins into the second half, out scored them 12pts to 3pts to win by a point, although Niland should've slotted over the free instead of going for goal when they where 2pts up. Further looks bright some fine players on the cbs team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,754 ✭✭✭robbiezero

Brilliant win. They were destroyed in that first 10 mins of the 2nd half and had Athenry finished the first half well on top. Looked all over. They completely took over for the last 20 mins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,037 ✭✭✭YabaDabaDooley

Great win for Thurles. I thought they were very unlucky to go in at the break level. That 21 yard free sonehow ended up in the Thurles net. I felt Thurles should gone in at ht 3 or 4 ahead.

Athenry looked very dominant early stages of second half but Thurles kept chipping away.

Really big moment Niland going for a goal and sending it wide. A simple tap over point would have put then three points ahead. Hindsight is wonderful but that was never the right call. He was probably encouraged by his goal in first half.

Thurles were excellent coming down the stretch when the real heat came on. Athenry hit a bad sideline wide and Niland hit a demoralising wide in the games dying embers.

The football final was woeful thank god the hurling delivered. Congrats Thurles.

Very poor football game. Was weird to watch with the old rules, but it definitely left one feeling good riddance to that type of game.

Derry team were much better. Mayo attacking problems extend to their schools also.
