Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. If you are gonna spend 70 on redbreast 12

Spend an extra 20 and get the redbreast 12 cask strength

    Absolutely stunning

If the cask strength is too heavy you can always add a few drops of water

Do any of you fine people, know where I would track down a bottle of Crown Royal... it seems impossible to get over here any more!!

Fairly certain I am getting a bottle of something as an anniversary present tomorrow so I'll hold off posting just in case it's something interesting. Think I'll also include a cask strength but I will note that on the sample.

I'm going to go for two single malts with a very unique character which I really hope my Secret Santa match might not have tried...

  • Registered Users Posts: 175 ✭✭janiejones

I sent 2 single malts, sample a and b with abv on container. With a folded note with the names

What's the best Irish Whiskey in the 100-120 range?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 3,159 Mod ✭✭✭✭Black Sheep

    It's a bit subjective really.

That's a funny price range in that you could probably spend 80-100 and get something as good as 100-130. I'd sooner get a cask strength Redbreast 12 than pay more for a 15 for example.

Some Bushmills special releases are worth looking at probably. JJ Corry's high end stuff is super.

Flagship stuff like Jameson 18 and Redbreast 21 are 200 plus however.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 3,159 Mod ✭✭✭✭Black Sheep

I've my samples boxed up but can't post till Thursday or Friday.

Notes are wrapped around the samples to be read (or not, as desired).

One 50ml and one 30ml. I'll say nothing else so as to preserve any blind tasting mystique.

    I have chosen two whiskeys

One excellent traditional Irish pot still

One excellent single malt Irish aswell

I feel it's a perfect example of two pillar Irish whiskeys

    One 46%

    One cask strength

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,269 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

My collection is mostly samples and miniatures! So that made it awkward. I picked two relative rarities that 'veteran' posters here may not have tasted, so there may be some curiosity value even if it doesn't inspire ye to buy a bottle.

Anyone tried the wdoconnell bill Phil?

    I know I tried it but I can't remember 🤔🤣

A couple of late entries has brought the number up to 15. Thanks to those who kindly agreed to change their match to accommodate. I think we are at our limit now logistically especially with postal dates etc.

I sent mine this morning. I have two matches to make up the numbers and I've gone for two cask strengths, a component sample and a bottle that's usually collected rather than opened. I was a bit unsure about the component sample but I think it's an interesting whiskey to try as it's local to one of my matches and can't be bought commercially.

Exciting news for all you Proper 12 fans...

@irish_goat you better not be sending samples out of that!

I guess Zaconey fans will be happy...

    Ready 🙂

I hasten to add that A is a generous measure, rather than B being stingy 🤣

  • Registered Users Posts: 106 ✭✭1901Rory

As of yesterday mine are on their way. I felt that my open bottles were a bit “ordinary” so it gave me the motivation to open one of my “good”bottles. The sort of bottle that I probably would hesitate to open for years otherwise. No bad thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,428 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Posted mine. Just FYI, An Post wanted €9 but it fit in a prepaid bag for €6

That is another layer of packing. I got paranoid about bottles breaking so went OTT. Apologies to whoever it is who'll have to waste hours trying to get in to the packet 🤣

Ordered a bottle of Dead Rabbit from Irishmalts earlier.

    Anyone tried same?

    Fingers crossed it's a winner.

Two samples arrived! Looking forward to tasting them.

    Thanks mystery poster.

    Arrived today thanks Santa!

Mines was delivered yesterday according to reg post. Looking forward to Friday week!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,906 ✭✭✭Cazale

Both of mine were delivered this morning. I've resisted the temptation to peek at the notes so far!

I'm thinking of having some whiskey tonight given the weather outside. Anybody doing the same?

Tested positive for covid again today (mild enough symptoms) so medicinal hot whiskies for me tonight!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,213 ✭✭✭Beanstalk

Great! Yeah I put away the tasting notes going to go blind but was very tempted! I was at the Kinnegar Winterland Market today and it was a resounding success really busy! Having an old fashioned now and then I'm going to dip into their tap room only imperial brown ale can. And maybe by the end of the match have a wee Ardbeg or something similarly smokey to send me off to bed.

After a big dinner having a lazy approximation of an old fashioned as a digestif. Method Madness Single Grain, Powers Old Fashioned, with dash of classic coke.

Will have something hot later but havent figured out what yet..

The Redbreast bird feeder is back. Not convinced by the red though (the copper one in my garden still looks great!)

Finished off a bottle of Talisker 10 last night.

Time to open a Christmas bottle this week I would think.

So I had some hot whiskey last night. Jameson, hot water, bit of honey, very nice.

Texted a mate, he asked if I'd put a tea bag in it. I thought he was messing but, googling it, it seems like this is a thing. Anyone tried it? Might have to tonight, but I'm very sceptical

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,667 ✭✭✭adaminho

No I haven't tried it but my brother swears by a hot Red lemonade and lemsip with whiskey for a flu!

Edit. Simmer Red Lemonade on the hob, add Honey to a pre warmed glass, mix lemsip and and lemonade in the glass and add whiskey. Works great with spiced rum also. Lemon and clove on top.

You can do something similar with cider :)

Non alcoholic cider might work too like Stonewell.

I remember going to a Roe and Co event this time of year when they were first launching and the welcome drink was a hot mulled cider with Roe and Co base.

Funnily enough I was out before the Munster match and Bulmers had a mulled cider promotion on.

Picked up a bottle of Laphroaig for the first time oddly, and I love it! Peatyness is great!

Also have a bottle of Ardmore, another Scotch and it's also very nice.

Micil in Galway appear to have released another whiskey, Micil Madeira, I have a bottle of it on the way. Will report back!

It's a classic expression of an island whisky (Although technically you could also consider it a highland whisky I suppose, there's a bridge to Skye now). A bit peaty, a bit maritime but pretty approachable.

I have to say it was one of my all-time favourites but maybe my tastes have evolved... Now I would say it is still good but I'm less enthusiastic. I'm tempted to say that it's not as good as it used to be, and blame Diageo, but I have absolutely no basis for that one way or the other, I doubt it to be honest.

Not as heavily peated as Ardbeg 10 or Laphroaig 10, it's not dissimilar in phenols to middle-of-the-road Islay whiskies such as from Lagavulin. It's more peated than stuff from the likes of Bowmore.

Quite well-balanced as a whisky, if someone likes Lagavulin 16 and wanted a cheaper alternative it would worth a whirl.

The label was re-designed of late and it looks cheap, they've introduced a kind of island silhouette design that just doesn't work for me. The old label was understated elegance. That being said, Talisker 10 is often quite cheap, it's frequently been on sale at Tesco, so fill your boots if you get the chance.

Opened a bottle of Connacht Batch 1 this evening, 47% single malt. Have been meaning to buy a bottle for ages. Not really knowledgeable enough about whiskeys to post a proper review but I really enjoyed it

only getting around to sending the samples for the secret santa today, sorry - I'm sending a 30ml and a 50ml sample of a couple of (hopefully) interesting things that the person may not have had before.

Only getting around to sending mine today too. I have gone with 2 non-Irish so hopefully the person is open to more than Irish! Only had 50 ml sample bottles so they will have to forgive me for that too :)

    Thank you Secret whisky santa:

I'm looking forward to trying these next week.

The Tiny Tipple bottles are class, i'm sorry I didn't get anything in their closing down sale.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,428 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Tiny Tipple are back. Not sale prices, of course, but looks like the same deal being run by a new crowd...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,225 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

I sent mine via Registered Post, and the lady in the PO said it would be with the recipient by Thursday of this week. Should say I also sent non-Irish

I'm confused, are the bottles behind the samplers what's in them? How did you know and how did you have the boxes
