Saw this on a Michael MJD video and just knew that I had to have it. It's a fakeout of Windows 95 on Mega Drive but it's actually this lad's chip tune album in a full Mega Drive cartridge.

I don't even know what the music is like. The dude is building them himself by hand too which as I know from experience is no small feat.

Mainly buying it for the novelty of having an album on Mega Drive cartridge. :-P

Anybody else ever bought anything like that before? I'm trying to encourage my chip tune friend Circuit Bird to release some of her music on cartridge too.

After several years of waiting my Polymega Deluxe Bundle finally arrived. I have to say it might have been a painful wait but so far I really like the system. The UI really is fantastic, was able to install an M.2 drive without any problems and have been dumping my collection onto it gradually over the past few days without any issues. Really love the filters they have developed, in particular the RGB and RGB/Blur look just amazing on a modern OLED screen. They darken the image slightly, apply really great scanlines and really nail the look of playing these games on a CRT. The fact that you can easily save these on a per game basis and easily swap between them midgame and seeing the current image previewing before changing is again just a testament to how good the UI design is. Really looking forward to testing out the translation patching for my Japanese titles too.

I know a lot of people's attitude to it is just get a RetroPie but I have been down that route before and there is just too much tinkering and I always would run into some limitation or issue. This is the all in one pickup and play solution that I have wanted for a long time, allowing me to massively simplify my setup and still play everything on my primary TV and via my home theatre.

Wow, I tell you what, that's some clean packaging design! I wonder how many units and add ons they shipped in the end? I was convinced this one would be vapourware.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,759 ✭✭✭Inviere

A good UI can really make or break the experience. Especially when they mail nice touches like filter previews, save states, etc, sounds like they've nailed this one.

Jesus, I forgot about that! I remember at the time I was interested in it but I think the price threw me off? Looks like a lovely bit of kit in fairness.

It's a premium looking product for sure, I see you can just straight up by it now.

Just shy of 750 euro for the base unit and four console modules. Not cheap but honestly, it's not overpriced for what you're getting IMO. Wonder do they have an EU distributor or could you get whacked out of it with a big import bill?

Interesting to see they're giving lightguns a go too:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,565 ✭✭✭Parawind

Honestly so did I for a long time, the whole thing could actually be a movie. They they had typical supply chain issues, then they had some of the parts being manufactured in Myanmar which then had a Coup D'etat in 2021. I suspect they ran out of funds and ended up with Atari buying a steak in the company and being the unlikely hero. As of March 2024 they have fulfilled all of the back orders from 2023 and earlier.

There was a European supplier called Worldwide distribution or something however I staying away from them and ordered direct from their site, only paid 25 euro customs. The unit was cheaper when I ordered it think it was closer to 600 back then. There was some shaddy dealing with the European supplier and they never placed orders with Playmaji the parent company. I believe they are still trying to sort it out but I personally would only go direct through their site.

The Lightgun is actually a partnership, it is a custom version of the Sinden lightgun however that is still not shipping yet. Really can't wait for that to get shipped.

I had tried the "Retron 5" previously and still have it, but never ended up using it much simply because the UI was so awful. This does look and feel like a premium product and pretty much every way you want to play something it gives up options to do it your way. I'd go so far as to say the UI is one of the best I have ever used. Its graphically clean, the menu layout is similar to the PS3 cross media bar but less cluttered sort of like the PS4 menu was originally. The database of screenshots from games and details is great, it even recommends similar retro titles with screenshots and info on them in certain sections which is just really nice but also not in a intrusive way.

Got this in the post today after seeing a Michael MJD YouTube video about it.

It's a Windows 95 simulator for Mega Drive but it's actually just a very clever interactive chip tune album by MikeyEdley

Had a quick bash of it and it's a lot of fun!

    More can be seen here:

There's a few left on his Bandcamp page if anyone fancies picking it up:

Was skimming through this video, that's a serious bit of kit!

Around 12-13 years ago I used to make DJ mixes but never had time to practice enough to get good so I never got into it enough to do complex samples/loops. I think I would have had more fun with synths since you can kinda just arse around with them, layer a few things and come out with weird/funky tracks.

That guy's videos are really brilliant, he's a seriously talented dude! I could watch him for hours.

The only thing I find about him is he's so good he makes it look too easy. I came out of that video initially thinking I'd be the next Jean-Michel Jarre the day it landed but unfortunately that was not the case. Haha

Chris Lody does some excellent tutorials and explains how to access everything step by step.

After watching this I was able to make some half decent tracks. Was having a hard time trying to figure out how to actually record my own melodies (who would have thought the record symbol on the right would do it??) youve to press the play button after record for it to actually start recording.

Really looking forward to getting properly stuck in this weekend.

    Picked up what should be my last Gran Turismo collecting…so far;

Gran Turismo Concept 2002 Tokyo-Seoul - a more limited version of the Concept series.
Gran Turismo 4: Toyota Prius Trial - was given out by Toyota in Japan for those who showed interest in their Prius seemily. They eventually stopped when demand outstripped actual interest in the car.

so… you want to play Castlevania Rondo of Blood for 30 years and then 3 different ways to play it land in your lap in a week. What do you recommend folks ? Original on PC Engine or the PSP/Switch versions ?

Ah you have to go PCE given you've that tasty Duo-R sitting there!

Funnily enough I haven't played through it myself until recently picking up the new Turbo Everdrive that can play PCE-CD games. Its an incredible game.

Always wanted a BBC Micro so took a punt on a non-working from eBay, also picked up a set of Rifa caps for the PSU and a SD Card interface.

Indeed a non-runner, took is all apart, cleaning up the case and main board. Nothing looked obviously wrong, so go about and worked on the PSU (yup, the main Rifa cap had already popped) and then had another look at the mainboard. Found one of the negative power connectors on the main board was lose. Soldered that and put the machine back together and…BAM! It lives!

Didn't have a chance to play with it yet, but my main aim - to play Elite 😁

As all of the Zilog Z80 chips that interest me are getting discontinued in July after 48 years, I decided to stick an order in with Mouser to get 30 new ones. Its unlikely they will ever be hard to get, but I wanted a batch of new ones anyway for some future projects.

The 8Mhz Z84C0008PEG is what I was after.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,279 ✭✭✭KeRbDoG

I had notions before Christmas when I saw this pop up https://www.enterlogic.se/?page_id=180 - a compact A500+ compatible motherboard. Luckily I was given an A500+ mainboard many years ago by CiDeRmAn which I think he got as a lot from Olly(?).

So a large order to Digikey (and other suppliers) and many many hours later I've only got the board 80% done with the Amiga custom chips to be populated and a RAM SIMM to be built.

Will this whole thing work whenever I get back to it?! I reckon around a 20% chance! 😄

Keeping with the Amiga theme, picked up one of these for the A1200/A600 and using Roadshow tcp stack. Ridiculously easy to setup and now FTP'ing at a blazing 100Kb/s :)

Received my OLED mod kit for the GBC this morning and decided to install it at lunch.

Pics just don't do it justice, the OLED looks awesome and the mod/install was as easy as it gets. The screen is actually meant for a Blackberry Q10. As the OLED is also under the GBC logo you can select any colour you want, or leave it off. Simple touch screen interface to adjust the filters, position and other basic screen adjustments.

A word of warning though, the included buttons and D-pad are crap. So make sure to re-use the original ones from the donor GBC. Shell is quite decent itself, no complaints there.

    Highly recommended: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006665552898.html

^^ Picked up this pretty mint Mega CD II recently. I've a real soft spot for the Mega CD, so this will compliment my other tower of power. The only problem is, I kinda feel I need a second 32X now 🙄

^^ My terminal Atari-addiction continues. The 130XE is the last of the Atari 8bit Micros, before they pressed on with the 16bit ST range. The 130XE is very much ancient tech, dressed up as a baby-ST. I think the 800XL is the more desirable model, but having one already, I kinda felt I needed the XE too! The tape deck comes with it, though I can't see it being used much...ive other ideas for this one...

^^ Something something female K9's.... I'm delighted to be back in the Nomad club, it's a gorgeous handheld. This one has an issue with the DC jack, so I'll just reflow it or replace it if needs be. This one will likely find it's way onto an upgrade thread down the line...

^^ I really hadn't much interest in owning a GT until I repaired Quigs one....i was immediately sold on them then. I like to proclaim I'm not a big fan of handhelds, but my collection definitely makes a mockery of that stance at this stage. This one is working, but no screen working...so I've a cap kit here for it, and failing that, it'll also find it's way onto a repair/upgrade thread down the line too...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,886 ✭✭✭Steve X2

Interested to see what mods you decide to do on the Nomad. My main minty Nomad has the older lcd screen mod on it and cuts out after a while when paying on an Everdrive(normal carts are fine). From a glance online it looks like it might have been modded internal on the 5v side, i dunno to be honest.

Anyway, it needs a modern mod refresh so looking forward to what you have planned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,759 ✭✭✭Inviere

I'm on a waiting list for the next round of Venus Sub 2020 boards by Oleg Endo....the Rolls Royce of Nomad screen mods really.

No ETA, but worth waiting for. Failing grabbing one of these, I'll likely go for an RGBDRV board (which are currently out of production) or the older LCDDRV board (which is more plentiful.) All three options either way would be a significant upgrade over the original screen.

In terms of your Nomad, yeah I think Everdrive carts draw more power than a regular cart so it's possibly something on the power regulation side, and unless it has been recapped, I wouldn't rule out ageing caps either.

Ok, so that Oleg boards definitely seems to be the way forward for my mod refresh. How does one get on the waiting list? And yes, a fresh cap kit seems sensible at this stage as I'm unsure if that was done when the LCD was installed.

I was told to follow him on Twitter (search for Oleg Endo), and then ask him to DM you re the waiting list for a Venus 2020 board. He'll then take a few small details and put you on the list. He's a super nice chap, and I wasn't waiting long to hear back from him.

Also, is that a stand up Ridge Racer in the corner, or just part of the sit down version?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 899 ✭✭✭dav09

It's the original Ridge Racer sit down, not sure if it's a dlx or how they all came but big cab net has a 29 inch crt in it and single cabinet. I've been trying to get all the best drivers together for a new project.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,759 ✭✭✭Inviere

How true that is. I've a bigger hardware collection now than I probably ever had....the vast majority is rebought after selling 🙄

It was game collecting that burned me out, causing me to sell up. Never going down that road again. Original hardware, a select few games for each system, and flash carts/ode's all the way then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 899 ✭✭✭dav09

I just wonder which is the one which'll finally break me haha, they are monsters to move around alone, this one close to half a tonne for the car, wheels completely banjaxed (and as a result so am I today). It came from Ireland, was there one in Tallaght back in the day at the Atari Expo? Two cars got sold abroad a few years back, they parted one car that was apparently completely goosed but saved all the working parts out of it so I have a lot of spares, fully working. Has its screen unit (although will replace rear projection with LCD as it's goosed) along with a load of accessories to go around it.

Another cool one I got recently was a Star Wars Pod Racer twin, I ended up working on this years ago two previous owners ago but saved it just in time before heading to the scrapyard. It was a fun game, one side works, although getting side 2 PCB repaired might be hassle, I'll try recap it hopefully it's none of the custom chips.

Ah you're definitely better off, I think a lot of us had these visions of having a room almost like a rental shop with shelves and shelves of games on display but it's just not really feasible with the size of average houses in this country. Plus with the price of games these days I don't know how anyone collects anymore.

I can't even begin to imagine how you move something like that around by yourself!

Delighted to hear it came from Ireland. Was thinking it would be some job to have something that big imported. Only time I ever saw one of them was in Dr Quirkeys on O'Connell street.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 899 ✭✭✭dav09

I'm going to guess it was that unit, there can't have been many here, Quirkeys got most of the SDLX stuff very little elsewhere. They were 80k brand new apparently (for the full 4 player system), it has like 60k on the cash box counter so by 4 it would be 240k. (and believe me it was probably less, as usually some cars get played more than others). Once you take out VAT of 23% (55k), maintenance, etc, a lot of these really mustn't have made much profit especially over it's lifecycle, more of a show piece than anything. The Cycraft is well over double the weight at 1.1 tonnes for the base unit but at least I can (somewhat) move that on a pallet truck.

With those kinds of figures, I can understand why certain games back in the day were looking for 2 euro a pop.

I suppose the problem then is less people play it. I do remember just not going near games in arcades that were more expensive as you just felt like you weren't really getting value for money.

How do you power these massive machines with hydraulics and the likes? Does it all go through one big PSU or are there are few power sources?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,264 ✭✭✭✭o1s1n
    Master of the Universe

Weird thing to say but I love the weight of 32X cartridges, there's something really satisfying to them. They feel more like Megadrive beta carts with heavier eeprom chips on them or something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 899 ✭✭✭dav09

I was the same, maybe give something like that a go as a kid as a once off but you might have a tenner going in to the arcade once every few weeks, you want to maximize the tenner you have and get the most enjoyment out of it (or at least that was the initial plan, and then proceeding to lose half of it on the push penneys because you're certain you'll get more back until I eventually figured out the mechanism side chutes, as with that royal ascot horse racing, a simpler time).

As for the hydraulics/motion, I had that same question yesterday for it I was interested in seeing how it worked, it's similar to the Cycraft but less complicated. From a quick glance on the Outrun 2 Super Deluxe you have 2 huge electric actuators that move up and down for the motion on the back of the car. So you'd have a PSU for the Lindbergh, PSU for the Screen and then another power management unit for the motor controllers for the actuators by the looks of it that control direction/power in them, and then there's also some sort of limit switches on them that feed back value into the machines.
