Our numbers are stalling though. When we get our numbers down to a similar percentage as Austria or Italy, we can start to reopen.

Schools start next week here for special needs

We are still on a downward trend.

Come 5th March things will look much better.

ITALY - Italy on Monday relaxed coronavirus restrictions in most of its regions, allowing greater freedom to travel and the daytime reopening of bars, restaurants and museums.

AUSTRIA - "schools, museums and shops set to reopen"
"Services such as hairdressers and beauticians will also be allowed to reopen"
"Meetings of people from more than two households will once again be allowed "

Schools in Austria have been closed since November.

Italy are an absolute basket case, PM resigned last month and I'm not even sure if they have a government at the moment.

Prudent to look around Europe and see what they doing or handling the pandemic, dangerous stupid to base our reopening on 'just cause' X are doing it.

Hopefully this trickle will lead to a tidal flood throughout Europe.

I’ve a very bad feeling that Ireland may look like the European equivalent to the class dunce come end of April.

If cases have stalled with literally everything possible closed... then that should tell you all you need to know about how useless strict lockdown is.

The cases will drop off more when spring and summer arrive. The seasonality will have more impact than closing viable business but we need to be seen to be doing something.

But the fools in charge will probably sh*t the bed again and just extend everything come March 5th.

And when the good weather brings cases down, they’ll claim pro longed lockdown works.

I completely get what you're saying but it's a very defeatist attitude.

We shouldn't just accept the above scenario - we need to positively come together look to other countries, our falling numbers and roll-out of vaccinations to vulnerable, etc.

and say right now we've done our bit, time to start balance other societal concerns and reopen the economy in a safe manner.

Interesting article in Irish Times on protests in the Netherlands and how we are not inclined to do similar:

    https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/why-is-it-that-we-irish-do-not-riot-like-the-dutch-1.4472456

We are quite meek in Ireland in a way.

Hopefully, we wake up a bit and see that the Government's ultra-conservative/cautious plan for the next few months is not feasible.

We can voice our dissent in a positive way using evidence and stats from other EU countries.

Protest Rave of 200 odd people?

I imagine Macron is getting ready to tender his resignation.

If only the simpletons would keep the masks on.

    Who is reopening right now?
South Africa have banned alcohol sales.
UK are doing door to door testing, still not sure when they will open and have more vaccinated than us.

My opinion you will see the following:

We will reopen the schools first.

Shops will open after Paddys weekend.
Travel outside 5k will be lifted but small clusters

Sport for kids will hopefully be back by start of April.
May restaurants/hotels will open along with campsites etc
July/August pubs will open with limited capacity at first

Would you reckon outdoor works will be back at the beginning of March too?

Because we don't have a very minuscule amount of cretins that dress up as Nazis and behave like criminal scum throwing paving blocks and destroying peoples property?

I wouldn't be judging the Dutch on the actions of those idiots to be honest.

The problem with our protests in the past year was that they were too focused on
singular issues eg masks. Additionally protests were associated to extremist elements such as 5G loons etc.

If we are to have effective protests in Ireland the message needs to be clear
One clear message . “REOPEN Ireland NOW”

That’ll require huge organisation and willingness from respected members of hospitality, tourism, mental health representation , fitness industry etc etc and sadly they’re very very quite in questioning NPHET and/or government.

However when the pup and other supports dry up that tune will undoubtedly change.
    The sooner the better

    Nope, I'm nothing like you.

But if I were I still wouldn't be encouraging people throwing paving stones or destroying peoples property from that room.

The protests happening across Europe are not led by fringe right-wing disrupters, although there's always a few.

Mainly it's just normal people who are completely fed - up.

Anyways, Europe will move towards reopening over coming weeks and pressure will be on Irish government to reopen sooner.

When people, especially business owners and retail/tourism sectors, see the reopening in other countries, they will mobilise and begin to vocalise their dissent.

    Really?

AFAIK, they were all from the same group of loons.

    Anti Vax will be next.

I wouldn't encourage that either but you're being incredibly dishonest by immediately dismissing every single person protesting as some sort of neo nazi

Yes they're quiet at the moment, but when it becomes clear we will be Paddy last on reopening again, they'll start getting letting their opinions be known.

I very doubt any business owners were throwing paving stones and wrecking other peoples businesses in Holland.

Don't think even our government is dim enough to cut off supports before allowing businesses to reopen...

    I did no such thing.

Someone highlighted an article about certain scum in Holland rioting and bemoaning the fact the Irish are not like them.

    "meek".

Well considering where the numbers were and the crisis in the hospitals, la strict lockdown was effective, it got the numbers down.

Now once we get into Spring, hopefully the numbers will drop and we can open things up.

If the South African variant comes here, you can forget it though, you can see how serious the UK are taking it.

South Africa banned alcohol sales as it was so bad there.

That was me actually and the article was in the Irish Times yesterday and is a very reasonable one.

Basically we don't do civil unrest and are very deferent to those in positions of authority.

    That’s what I said.

Any new protest tactic will need to contain a respectable element with industrial backing.
I don’t see our protests ever getting violent to the levels of Netherlands etc tbh
