My cousin is a primary school teacher in Dublin and she mentioned that schools could be closed until after Paddys Day.

So if this happens prepare for the long haul

    That’s unhelpful baseless speculation

I can't see NF losing another battle, MM won't allow it. I can see some fudge been done and a phased return. The bigger problem coming down the line is the longer they leave the LC out, the more pressure for a Plan B. JC hasn't a hope in hell of happening and listening to the teachers on here it seems that the dept are happy for JC to go down the drain.

Hello, primary school teacher in Dublin here. We've been told feck all about when schools reopen, beyond the current campaign to reopen in Feb.

Your cousin isn't wrong per se - we could reopen after Paddy's, just as we could reopen at the start of February or after midterm - but being a Dublin based primary teacher doesn't give any special insider information. Speculation does nothing beyond whip up stress and uncertainty.

Do you want a bigger paddle for your stirring? Baseless and uninformed speculation. As it stands we are all fully back on Feb the 1st.

Look it is after Paddys then you should realistically say after Easter such is the tiny gap between them.

Totally agree with this post. As far as we know we are going back to do school on the 1st. Suppose noone really knows what it actually going to happen but that's the assumption we are working off now. Articles on the newspapers are suggesting a much longer closure but there has been nothing official said so I would disregard speculation at the moment.

It'd be great to get some clarity, as a contractor now minding the kids, I might retain my job if the schools re-open as planned but as it stands I'm due to be fired because of my inability to return to work.

Some clarity would be great but appreciate the numbers will probably decide....

I'm not being smart but have you noone to form a childcare bubble with? A neighbour or friend?

Yeah we've reached a plateau of sorts with case numbers but the hospitals are in for a very rough ride unfortunately.

No one the department or any school knows this. Plenty of opinions and conjectures but schools are expecting a few days notice of having kids back in, more if it's directly after a break because it will be based on numbers in the community, r number, and close contact numbers, all of which are moving targets. Anyone who tells you they know for definite is lying

This thinking is over simplistic and betrays a lack of understanding and biased reading of the situation that is being employed by unions.

'Safe' is not a black and white issue. The question is whether teachers are putting themselves at a risk that is similar or lower than many other sectors of the working world, and whether the importance of them carrying out their work justifies that risk. In the opinion of all, and backed by all knowledgeable specialist expertise, the answer is that it is.

The ill informed analysis from teachers is akin to the opposite bias from the pub trade (guess which sectors workers are losing money by not working, and which ones have to income at stake no matter what), claiming there is no evidence of covid transmission in pubs, so they should be opened.

But teacher unions mindsets are unable to move from decades of acquired bad culture and selfishness, and are 'protecting their members' without recognition to their responsibilities to society in general, and adapting their response in the light of a once in a century crisis.
It is disgusting to the rest of society, and blaming a minister for stonewalling unions is nonsense.

Your beloved Norma was a member of the ASTI this time last year. In fact she was a member for over thirty years.
Given your high opinion of your heroine surely she helped formulate some of those mindsets.

Teachers know literally nothing about when they'll be back! We find out from the media.

“Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said: "This virus has taken root in every single part of the country. A significant percentage of the population - in excess of one in 10 in some counties - is currently either a case or a close contact. This is a huge burden of infection.”

Hopefully things will have improved massively by the time schools reopen...so we have till Thursday then.

That 1 in 10 data is absolutely ridiculous. Seriously how we ended up like this is absolute stupidity.

Article is from two months ago, old news.

I don't think anyone is of the illusion that ANY schools are immune. Most cases in those schools were staff, wonder if its similar here.

I think you know an autocratic somebody, in an important position, who thinks school are immune.

So true. We should have sheltered the population in the only safe place on the planet, Irish schools.

    Norma has missed a trick.

We could wipe out the national debt by selling spots in JI to some wealthy foreign investors!!! Only issue though is the possibility of some lawsuits from the gammy legs they would end up from the chairs!!

Wet paper towel will sort the gammy legs out surely? Or a sip of water followed by putting their heads down on the table.

Us teachers are such amazing medics :p

Schools arent due back for two more weeks, daily case numbers will be around 1000 and schools will be back on the 1st.

    Again
Will these daily cases be based on everyone being tested who needs and a test and close contacts as before
    Or
Will they reflect only a portion of the actual cases as is currently the practice
    And
Will contact tracing be functioning correctly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,907 ✭✭✭beggars_bush

Can schools return until close contacts are being tested?

No, mixing 1000000 people across the country without contact tracing and a level in the community would be reckless

Positivity rate has more than halved in the last 10 days, even with huge testing numbers so you might not be wrong.
