Case numbers do not decide the reopening of anything.

It's more about hospital numbers and in 2 weeks they are going to be dire unfortunately.

Can schools return until close contacts are being tested?

The more pertinent question really is, should they be returning while close contacts aren't being tested?

Certainly. Contact tracing from school settings cases have little influence on the wider spread of the virus.

What does this even mean ?

I spoke to many of my SEN colleagues and it is about a 50% split in who is returning to work for a multitude of reasons.

It would really leave schools in a precarious situation if many of their 'anchor' staff are not present, especially in SEN classes.

Sarcasm really is wasted on some in here.

This is the problem in a nutshell though - teachers and pupils making risk assessments that they are unqualified to make.
    So what are your qualifications?

Ahh contact tracing across the wider community are you just deliberately being obtuse?

Encourage every single one of them to email their branch secretary and also their CEC rep with their views.

I have sent an email to my county CEC rep early this evening. I sent an even stronger worded email to the INTO. I feel like we need a 2nd Primary Teachers Union.

I'd love it if ASTI opened a primary wing. INTO is a lost cause.

Branch secretary as well. Every available avenue needs to be used.

I’d be interested to see how many parents will send their SEN children in Thursday
A lot of planning could be for nothing in some instances

schools back with a 1000 cases a day? cmon now bit of realism here. cant see 1000 cases a day by feb 1st , by that reckoning we would be at 200 a day bu march 1st if schools stayed shut and everything else at level 5, i think we need to drive on keep level 5 until late march get case numbers down to under 50 or less.

Schools were open in mid October when there was frequently 1000+ cases a day.

Cases will probably be <1000 a day within the next 2 weeks. We got our cases down to less than 50 before and yet here we are.

We can't just continue to lockdown, locking down only buys time and we've been doing it on and off since last March. A lot has been mobilised in that time, some might say not enough maybe. We are having our surge now that we were all warned about in the early days.

The hospitals are not good right now but hopefully we'll be through the worst of this by the end of the month.

There will likely be improvements in the numbers by the end of the month. After the mid term we should be in a good enough position to have schools back open fully.

That’s when 1000+ cases a day meant 1000+ cases a day as contact tracing was operating correctly and all positive cases were being identified due to adequate testing

I'd very much like to do the same.
Where would I find the details for my rep?

We also weren't testing 25,000+ people a day.

If close contacts are isolating for 14 days as they should be then it's all relative.

Doesn't matter if they have a test result or not, contacts are required to isolate whether positive or negative anyway.

Contact tracing is still happening they just aren't being tested but they'll still be notified to isolate.

thats because we didnt need to test 25000 a day, its winter now and things are completely
    out of control

they are sending in close contacts to work in hopsitals they are so short staffed and putting untrained staff to work on the ventilators the hospitals are completely over whelmed and people are worried about sending everyone back into buildings on top of one another when online teaching is much safer

I know, it's terrible the conditions that health workers are facing now after 10 months of very tough times for them already.

It must be a frightening place to work at the moment. They are so brave and resilient and I really feel for anyone working there or who has family working there right now.

I could only find the Rep's name online with no contact information on any site I looked up. I ended up finding her email address in our INTO diary.

You just need your roll number.
I’ve never before felt the need to contact my CEC rep on any issue. I was far from happy with many INTO actions but this is on a different level. John Boyle is out of touch with the membership.

According to The Sunday Times, Norma wants to bring Leaving Certs back on February 1 with the other years coming back on a phased basis. No mention of primary.

With cases falling daily, bringing back children this week on a phased basis, and hopefully cases will continue to fall daily, will be encouraging and will prove the decision is correct.
However if the cases stagnate or increase with schools returning this week, then it might have to be looked at again.
