midterm and other holidays are really important even though schools are closed for months.

School buildings are shut, not schools. Huge difference.

Just wondering who you think would be the biggest objectors would be?

I know that none of the kids I teach, and I'm involved with over 100 of them, would be happy to be in school for the summer.

I don't really want to keep this going but seeing as you ask a direct question - Many teachers and many parents would object strongly obviously. You can see that from here. And as I said, I neither need nor want it myself.
But people have different circumstances and some teachers might like be glad of the money, young teachers saving for weddings, mortgages etc. and some parents would love it as Summer can be tricky for working parents. Also some parents are genuinely worried about their children having fallen behind. I would have thought we were talking about a week or two, like going to the Gaeltacht for a few weeks or like doing those Easter revision courses, not the Summer long. And a shorter day so plenty time still for family outings/ activities. I heard so many parents saying how delighted their kids were to be back at school Sept to Dec, "the smiles on their faces" and all that. I think children generally like and do not dread school anymore. My nieces and nephews love school, the small ones adore their teachers and the bigger ones miss their pals these days. Having said all that, people can relax, it won't be happening.

Well if Easter holidays go ahead as planned then it really is a joke. Assuming the schools are opened at all by then of course.

The fact that special needs schools are accepting students shortly only to close again for mid term is ridiculous.

Why? Students have been working really hard and the days are much longer for teachers. 12 hour days not unsual. They all need a break.

Now we get your real point.

CAO is there for everyone, mature students are always welcome to retrain. You already pointed out the salary and the holidays.

Eh, I'd take that as a very general statement.

There's at least a few teachers, "teaching", and they're doing it from sunny beaches very far from here.

    If you say so.

I'm well jealous if they are.

    You'll get more traction here.

    If you say so.

    I fooking well know so.

How many of these teachers are actually being checked in on to see where they are?

Not all of them, that's 100% fact.

So worn out with this back n forth. The parents whatsapp group of my daughter's class erupted in a frenzy today of complaints about the school. Got pretty nasty and the school have gone above and beyond. I sent the teacher a message of thanks and support and as I said to her, I really think people are just at the end of their tether and the only thing they have to rage against is the schools. So we're getting it in the neck.
As myself and the teacher agreed we are sooo looking forward to being back at school and the normality of it, both for me and my own kids. This groundhog day is miserable. But the world over the pandemic has made it so difficult for schools so operate. and this variant bollox is like the Covid 2 the movie - just when you thought it was safe to come out...
I really hope we're back in on March 1st with proper support (and recognition of what risks are involved) from public health and DES

So you think we need to be at the address where our pay slips go to inorder to be "teaching"?

Are you one of the if they don't zoom they aren't teaching people?

No, I'm one of the people that knows teachers that are supposed to be at home, getting full pay, and teaching online...but that some are doing so not even on this continent.

It's a system that's wiiiide open to abuse, and being abused.

Unless I start naming names, no, no evidence. Believe it or not.

Every other sector is working hard and taking risk to keep this country running with exception to teachers who feels they are at huge risk if the schools are open. Regarding payment and holidays ...there are not many who earn full salary & holidays and get to stay at home. so consider yourself lucky.

Ahh c'mon.. Pull the other one..

Half the classes are YouTube videos or PowerPoints, no real homework to speak of... Its easy street...

Strangely that flies in the face of government advice to work from home where possible. I think you'll find that covers the majority of the workforce at the moment.

Looks like no sign of opening schools soon. school send us a note about the mid term holidays. congratulations teachers union. kids are the only losers here.

The kids arent losers. They aare safe and their family members are safe

I have no difficulty in believing that you have no evidence.

I'm sure you don't. It would be a bit of a sickener to accept that some teachers are on holidays, for months now and still getting paid full time.

And I do mean actual holidays, abroad. An hour of face-time a week to prove that they're still working in Ireland? Nah, couldn't possibly be happening, right? :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 306 ✭✭frank8211

Absolute zero chance this will happen in Ireland - unions won't allow it. Complete waste of time even discussing it.

I'd prefer to focus on getting schools re-opened ASAP. There's absolutely no reason all primary shouldn't be back open 22 Feb IMO.

The spread of the virus in schools is a good reason

This is great. One bloke refusing to accept that teachers are off abroad getting paid full time, and then here you are...

    Where are you so?

Because while some teachers have worked their a** off, the kids have not learned as much as they would if they were in school. This isn’t teachers fault, I know they would rather teach normally. But if a few extra weeks in summer could help them catch up then I think it would be worth it. Teachers could work extra hours just like nurses etc have when needed.

Might not be popular, even with parents or kids but I think it would benefit kids.

    Yes, months, since before Christmas.

What country are you working from?

Lets compare two jobs not alike as it suits people to bash teachers
