Hopefully we do the same. Open the schools over Easter and in July.

Obviously only speaking for my own class but nice way to punish them for engaging with the remote/online stuff. Send them to school when they should be on holidays!!

That would be brilliant we really need to look at doing the same.

I wouldn't think there'd be an appetite for that here, but you'd never know. I can't see it happening unless remote learning stops.

If it didn't happen last year when 3.75 months were missed (primary) I can't see it happening this year when 2 months will be missed (presuming return on March 1st)

It's not a runner, it's not feasible and the fallout wouldn't be worth it for the government.

It would also tell every single teacher in Ireland that they didn't work hard enough with the delivery of remote learning so here's more time in school to make up for your ineptitude.

    Can you imagine the ramifications?

Good article here on the ins and outs of remote learning in terms of live lessons and contact. Focused on primary schools.

Yeah, they'd have to give hols now and/or pay teachers for extra work in summer. Can't see them having the budget for that, or teachers signing up for it.

Going by the take up for the supplementary programme in our school there would be no appetite.

In my area it's common for teachers to run summer camps in schools during the summer, sports ones, arts and crafts ones, science ones. If these camps weren't allowed for Covid reasons, there might be some teachers happy to earn some extra cash doing summer school. As for the children, I think so long as they had a few friends at it, they'd be happier to go to school these days more than at any other time in the history of mankind ! My own 15 year old even says he misses teacher X at the moment and they are not best pals. But wh t works locally and the organisation to roll it out nationally Are two different things so for that reason school during holiday periods won't happen.

Absolute zero chance this will happen in Ireland - unions won't allow it. Complete waste of time even discussing it.

I'd prefer to focus on getting schools re-opened ASAP. There's absolutely no reason all primary shouldn't be back open 22 Feb IMO.

I'm sure at this stage you have contacted your local TDs with all your ideas and telling them why they are wrong to be following the path they have.

No comparison between a summer camp in something that the person running it is interested and the children want to attend and something forced on everyone by the government/DES that pretty much everyone would be against.

I have no doubt it wouldn't happen nor personally would it suit me but imo it's not the children who would be the biggest objectors to the idea.

So you think a child who has engaged with online/remote would respond well when told you now have to go to school during what should be your holidays?

I think lots of children would have absolutely no problem with it. Children are only spending a few hours on remote learning, no early mornings, no bussing to and fro etc, they are not exhausted the way their teachers are and many of them would happily do it to be with their pals. It's not going to happen for reasons other than the kids.

Depends on the kids I'd say. I know our gang well enuf to say they'd be raging if they've sat in front of screens for live lessons only to then be told they've to come in for more in the summer.

Everyone will have a different experience

Got my sons return dates, this thursday and nothing then again till the 23rd. Its absolutely farcical the mid term is going ahead. This is more damaging to special needs kids sending them back for a day and then off again.

Nuts, shouldn't have been sent back until after the midterm, crazy expecting children with special needs to head into school for a day, off for a week and then back (@50% capacity if I'm correct) again. No sense of routine at all.

Just wondering who you think would be the biggest objectors would be?

I know that none of the kids I teach, and I'm involved with over 100 of them, would be happy to be in school for the summer.

Would be the same reaction from the majority of my kids and also their parents. Enough is enough.

Bringing them into school when the weather would be better.

It won't be a runner anyway in England. From friends I have over there, there is zero appetite for it.

Would end up as glorified child minding.

Genuine questions that I’ve resisted asking numerous times .........
Has there been repeated calls for any other professions to work their annual leave ?

Plenty of other support services have gone “online “ that could be doing more to support SEN and at risk students .
Where are the calls for them to work their annual leave ?

I am absolutely mentally and physically exhausted . I need the break like never before . I will be the same by Easter and most certainly by summer .

Same here , going in on alternative days so in this Friday and then a full weeks break..
I will be keeping him home on Friday as he would be totally confused going into school for one day .. it will be hard enough getting him to understand the alternative days.

    Cases won't matter anymore

Paris have just closed schools after finding the SA variant to protect the vaccines, AZ in particular and rumours are the UK will extending lockdown over that variant to protect it's national AZ vaccine, we always follow so you know what that means, poor kids won't be going school anytime soon to protect the vaccine's.
