Yet another cheery and heart-warming news report from the doom merchants in RTE.

In comparison, UK media outlets reporting on the roll out of vaccines before the end of the year, very positive from them. Spanish outlets reporting on the plan being put in place to vaccinate its people.

RTE have given the great news of vaccines a wide berth, our government are in the process of putting a team together to make a plan while other countries are already planning.

Confidence in the HSE pulling this off is dwindling by the day. I can envisage us still being massively restricted while other nations are well ahead of us in terms of opening up. We already have had the toughest restrictions in Europe since March. Depressing.

On a strange flip side - Ryanair and Aerlingus will get some well deserved reprieve as thousands will book holidays to anywhere in EU to enjoy normal life and get away from this misery shi*e thats broadcasted on RTE daily and doctor death ofcourse.

Moderna just announced a vaccine trial came back as 95% effective. This is massive now and a game changer in terms of distrubution as its vaccine requires -4 celsius storage compared to Pfizer's -70.

Just letting you guys know as RTE won't report it.

It's the HSE we've to worry about now. :(

Nphet should have been disbanded the moment Dr. Tony returned from his sabbatical. At that point in a space of a day they have changed their advice from level 2 to 5. That alone is a proof that they are dysfunctional.

God forbid we'd have a bit of positivity, sure ya can't be doing that.

It would be fantastic if we had a vaccine tomorrow and we could put an end to all this ridiculous carry-on. Unfortunately we don't and have to make a plan for how to live now.

I think we can find a balance between the constant doom and gloom restrictions/lockdowns and completely opening up. It does seem like the government are stuck between two stools at the moment. If lockdown is required every few months, even with quite strict restrictions, then we should open up fully in between them as the restrictions clearly don't work as NPHET would like.

Would that be Tony and Sam ?

Not a hope in hell of this going on for another 5 months never mind 5 years.

Life will start to get back to normal around March. All the anti-vaxer Facebook type eejits will eventually succumbe and take it once they realise they can't travel abroad without a vaccine card confirming they got it.

I for one am utterly sick off this now, I'd rather be dead than put up with 5 more years of this.

They can only take it if its available
The production capacity is not enough to vaccinate everybody for at least 5 years
We will need other vaccines and production facilities to come onstream
Pfizer are not going to let anybody else manufacture their vaccine

Because the well informed do know. They also know the reduction in that rate that a vaccine would bring to that number. And so know taking a vaccine is without question, the rational and correct thing to do.

Great day with the Moderna news. Astra Zeneca to follow hopefully in the not too distant future.

Multiple respected commentators now effectively saying that this will end the pandemic for sure in 2021. It won't eliminate Covid, but the worst of it will end.

Supplies will be slow at first, but we should be able to get the most vulnerable vaccinated in hopefully Q1 of next year.

They should of been disbanded after the initial lockdown, they were never going to be compatible with a "living with covid" strategy when the first sign of an upward trend they recommend lockdowns. NPHET is devoid of a scientific approach and as pointed out a millions times doesn't have enough epidemiologists on it. I mean a glorified GP chairs NPHET how is that good enough? Hell even his deputy is more medically qualified.

This Living wit Covid plan doesn't inspire confidence either

I am confident they will announce level 5 late Jan -early Feb
    Why ?
    Because they can

As the poster initially stated, RTE are not running with the story on the main Twitter feeds.

What they have announced on Twitter is that the vaccine will “compliment” current measures.

The poster stated "RTE have given the great news of vaccines a wide berth"

False statement as proved. Goalposts were then moved to they haven't put it on Twitter when proved wrong instead of admitting their statement was incorrect.

Just reading this, I think it’s the most depressing thing I’ve seen all year

    https://www.independent.ie/life/travel/travel-news/dublin-airport-to-introduce-covid-tests-from-99-this-week-39752141.html

So we have a new tax, and travel for only the wealthy now. And before anyone says it’s ‘only’ 99 euros, that’s for the test with a longer wait - up to 48 hours, so factor in hotel rooms. Or pay even more for a premium faster test.
A fabulous new income stream, and it won’t be relinquished easily.

Edited to add - I would love to know who the shareholders are in these ‘private healthcare companies’.

Every successful clinical trial is a hammer blow to Tony Holohan's monumental ego. His vice-like hold on the public's imagination is slipping, loving it.

We’re no allowed travel, did you miss that bit? Been going on most of the year...

    You are allowed travel
Just not allowed back without restrictions :D

I dont get the point of those test centres? To encourage travel? so I am to spend hundreds of euros on a trip that may not happen if PCR test gives me a false positive? Way to go to discourage me.

If its for inbound flights - lols I will "restrict my movements" and save a hundred quid.

In both scenarios there is absolutely no use for these airport tests.

It still does it negate the inescapible reality that social distancing and other restictions in place under Level 2/3 will have to continue for all of 2021..

Elon Musk tweeted the other day that he done four of them and had 2 positive and 2 negative results.

    https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1327125840040169472

That’s great there will always be false positives and negatives but what harm an extra layer of protection on nursing homes?

    The safer the better surely?

RETAILERS AND PUBLICANS are calling for clarity on if and when they can re-open ahead of the Christmas season.

    https://www.thejournal.ie/will-shops-and-pubs-reopen-before-christmas-5268556-Nov2020/

What a sad state of affairs in this country. You know its bad when businesses have no idea if and when they can re open.

This has gone on far too long and is just unfair on people at this point. It's gone beyond a first world problem or whatever bull**** people were saying at the start. It's truly tough and the impact on people has to be considered much more.
