It is for sure. Best shot stopper in the country.

He's still only 29 so we might still have 2/3 seasons left in him if he does return in 2022

Congratulations to Stephen. Definitely one of the best goal keepers to play for Waterford and I’m seriously struggling to think of a better Waterford keeper over the past 30 years. He’ll be missed, a class player and I sincerely mean that, but it’s someone else’s time now.

Dare I say I told you so.....

I criticised you for making it up after the All Ireland final so apologies for that, you obviously did know.

Just looking in from the outside not the 1st Ballygunner player in recent times to step away with more in the tank to offer ( Barry Cloughlan and Philip Mahony), is this simply a coincidence or have several provincial campaigns into the winter taken its toll? Open to correction but all worked in Dublin at various stages during their intercounty runs so maybe that's a factor, i know mahony is based in Waterford now, possibly Cloughlan too.

He’s been on the panel since he came out of minor, that’s 10 years ago. It’s natural to get fatigue after that commitment. This year was no doubt a trying and testing year for any man. Good luck to him he Dosent owe anything

Totally agree with you but you didn't address the point I was making.

But sure unless he actually picks up the phone to all them lads from Ballygunnar who left the panel and asks them directly how can he address your point??

Just giving an opinion on the 3 players mentioned weather what I said is a coincidence or some correlation to it

There could be but in general intercounty players are retiring earlier anyway. I'd say most players retire around 29-30 these days

Socky will be hard replaced. We were many years without a steady keeper before he came along so we know they don’t come around easily in Waterford. I’d argue that you’d have to go back to the great Ned Power from the 50’s and 60’s to find a keeper of that calibre.

Shane Bennett is back on the panel pity he wasn't on it last season

Hopefully that's true. With no pre season tournament its up to the new guys to impress in the challenge games.

That's fantastic news. Bennett and Michael Kiely will make great additions.

Anyone else suspect that Cahill told socky that Nolan would be no.1 next year and he is taking the year out until there is a new management team in place?

Cahill is cut throat, we all know that now, Nolan might offer something differnt

Considering O Keeffe is one of two in contention for the goalkeeper all star on his form this year I think that unlikely.

Interesting conspiracy theory but surely that's all.

Nolan is a very able goalkeeper so no worries on that score. Is Kiely's addition to the panel confirmed (in as much as it can be). Looks like League games will be behind closed doors (at least the early rounds).

At this stage Cahill should be looking at all options.
Douglas is a strange one. He had talent underage but seemed to fizzle and drop out of the game after playing Harty.
I’d be surprised if young Fitzgerald from Clashmore didn’t get a league run out. He did well, along with Kiely, with the under 20’s.

Fitzgerald from Clashmore looks a good prospect

If you Google it there is an interview with county chairman from May basically saying it's been put on the back burner due to covid

A former member of the county board after a night drinking (him, not me, I dont drink) told me that no work will ever take place at Walsh Park, a least no meaningful work to bring the ground up to standard.

Might be better off playing someone there that actually plays there the whole time for their club. Goalkeeping is a very specialised position.

There aren’t a lot of viable options out there. Billy is a dame good keeper and deserves the first bite of the cherry.

Shaun O'Brien is a natural keeper. I am sure there is a few as well in the Intermediate and Junior Grades. O'Sullivan with Tallow is not a bad keeper either.
