is he close to making the team? That’s his second pga tour win now . He won the Honda in 2022

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,871 ✭✭✭abff

He’s 7th in the World points rankings. Behind Tommy Fleetwood and just ahead of Shane Lowry.

Just looking at the top 10 and ties in Scotland right now and you've got six from UK and Ireland, six from USA, three from mainland Europe and two from Korea.

Beemer made a great suggestion for what they should do with the playoffs. Instead of losing 20 players at the end of each one of these tournaments, they should lose 5 players per day. It would add some real needle into every single round lol

Anyone having a problem with the Sky red button on the golf today? Not working for me.

Hovland had 8 3s on the back 9!!

That was as good a finish to a golf tournament I’ve ever seen. That had shades of Mickelson v Els at the Masters and Mickelson v Stenson at the British Open. Phenomenal round of golf from Hovland, I’d say Scheffler is absolutely sick.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,093 ✭✭✭CMcsporty

It was something special. Hovland was fearless. I thought he might tighten up once he came within reach of Scheffler.

Scheffler bogey on 17 was systematic of his game. If only he could putt.

Reminded me that it all started to go downhill with his putter after the Masters last year.

He 4 putted the 18th at Augusta. He was brilliant that week and was never put under any pressure on the back 9.

Even the majors this year were won relatively comfortably by Harmon, Clark, Brooks, Rahm

We haven’t been treated to a true head to head since…that Stenson v Mickleson in 2016?

Last night was as good as it gets. Up there with the below for me:

    1999 pga - woods v garcia

    2011 masters - final round

    2004 masters - Mickelson v els

East Lake must be one of the least interesting courses on tour. Tournament badly needs a new course. Also the playoffs should be matchplay, having lads starting on -10 etc is fairly rubbish I think.

Surely the best players all year deserve an advantage trying to win the order of merit.

They mentioned looking forward to seeing the new works next year so seems like a change is on the cards. Keeping it as strokeplay, somewhere like Riviera would be cool. Once it'd be a tough enough course it'd be fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,442 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

Maybe they could be allowed to choose their opponent in the first couple of rounds, or get a bye to the semis or something.

If you look at the NFL playoffs a team could win every match in the regular season and then get knocked out straight away in the playoffs. Gives it an element of risk which would be exciting for me.

Riviera would be a great shout, think they need some sort of change anyway. The new course in Frisco is supposed to be good, I assume that'll eventually be the venue considering it's going to be the PGA's new signature course or whatever they're calling it.

    Great round from Morikawa

Rory now somehow tied with Scheffler, mad game altogether

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,310 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Never comes across well on TV, but is obviously a tough test.

Doubt they'll want to change it, huge history and tradition, but that is becoming less important all the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,295 ✭✭✭Trampas

It’ll never be match play. Tv companies hate it as top players be gone day 1.

Good to see Theegala get a win, very likeable character

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,899 ✭✭✭coillcam

It was just a matter of time for that win to arrive. The reduced field certainly helps but I think the confidence boost will allow him to kick on.

Justin Thomas had a decent finish with 5th place and he badly needed a performance. Tbf he could have done somewhat better given that he finished E in the 4th round.

Lexi Thompson currently looking like making the cut

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,295 ✭✭✭Trampas

Not going to make it now unless it toughens up in afternoon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,636 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

Pity about the finish for her. She played well. Bogey on 8 and the missed 6 footer on 9. Probably going to miss it by 2

Tom Kim doing the business again, albeit in a reduced field. Still its always tough to win let alone defend a title. Funny stat on the PGA app that popped up: He's now the 2nd person (after Byron Nelson) to win the same event twice in one season. The calendar re-jig and this "fall" run allowed that unusual opportunity. Aberg with a monster -9 final round and clocking up a bunch of 65 or better scores since he got on tour. Only Hovland is better in that period. He won't be far away from the first W either.

Would have been brilliant to see Lexi make a cut. Tbh I hope they bring more of the LPGA women across. I'd love if they did a mixed team or matchplay event. Imagine Lowry/Leona vs Cantlay/Lexi or Fitzpatrick/Hull. I can't see it happening but it would be really cool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,650 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

They could have brought in a better player than Lexi, she's been in awful form.

Up to a couple of weeks ago she didn't have a top ten on the season, she had more missed cuts than finishes.

Yuka Saso is who I'd like to see get a go. She's been playing well all year and is one of the biggest hitters on the LPGA tour.

Aberg wins on the PGA Tour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,650 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Only question now is how long it'll take him to become world no.1.

He's definitely going to get there if he avoids injury.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,785 ✭✭✭gypsy79

Really.....my question was is he better, worse or equal to Hovland

    He is definitely top 10

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,650 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Your question? I didn't see your question.

Hivland is clearly at the top of his game right now. I always said it's take him more time than Morikawa and Wolff to make his mark.

If I was to like Hovland to a successful golfer I'd name Bernhard Langer. He's very patient and rarely gets upset.

Langer was 22 when he won his first tournament and then at 25/26 years of age he won multiple tournaments for the first of many years to follow, He won his first Major at 28.

Hovland won his first tournament at 22 and lo and then won multiple titles in a season for the first time at 25.

He is following a similar path to this point and I think he'll be around for years as a very consistent.

It's hard to say if he'll reach no. 1 in the world but if he keeps up what he's been at over the last six or so many ths he will get there.

Aberg is a different beast though. He's high level at every skill and he's got the mental fortitude required to make it pay.
