Clearly something is amiss with these ideas if they are going to cause traffic jams, a phenomenon currently unknown in Dublin.

Nobody gains by implementing this, endless traffic jams causing pollution for cyclest and pedestrians to bread in,

I am curious as to how a traffic jam can be caused by a speed limit many times the speed of traffic in a traffic jam.

What evidence to contrary, how can you ignore higher pollution caused by an unnessary build up of traffic were cars/buses idling in queues, look at the cyclest wearing mask, walk along the queue of cars and smell the fumes. Maybe expand on all the evidence.

Build up of traffic caused by speed limits in excess of speeds currently achieved?

    Witchcraft.

I recently drove up through phibsboro in the evening. Constitution hill to Hart's corner (less than 1.5km) took 20 minutes. If only they'd increased the speed limit there, the traffic jam could have been avoided.

I think the point is, it's not likely to cause more traffic jams than we already have.

The idea would be the same as why a lot if countries use variable speed limits on motorways. IE speeds drop when it gets busy in order to allow a higher throughput of vehicles.

This isn't really the point here tho, as in the city we already have a f*** load of traffic jams and the main benefits are more likely to be safety and pollution based. Lower speeds does mean lower emissions.

The 30/40kmph limits seem to work in a lot if other EU cities, I don't think it will make much difference in Dublin anyway as 1. There is already way too much traffic and therefore quite slow and 2 after an initial heavy policing of it, there will be no more go safe vans than we already have..

You don't get it. It's not about promoting cycling. It's about making the roads safer because dickhead self-entitled drivers persist in making the roads more dangerous for people cycling and walking.
Let me ask you: would you let your kids cycle to school and if not, why?

Whatever happened to taking personal responsibility? do people not look before they cross the road these days?

Been in the pipeline since last year, they're trying to attach it to it.

    https://www.thejournal.ie/30km-zones-dublin-city-4914340-Dec2019/

How could any motorist on the council vote in favour of this?

Do they have to take notice of what will undoubtedtly be negative public submissions?

The damage this will cause to the local economy, to people's mental health by their commutes being nearly doubled, it's absolute insanity. I'd seriously consider moving to Fingal/ SDCC if this goes through.

The submissions thing is just going through the motions. they were bringing in this anyways using COVID 19 to ram it through is all this is now.

Promoting greener (cycling) travel inside a city centry which is clogged up with traffic spueing out fumes which are been inhaled as you cycle by, really??. It seems things are been done without much taught to the health of cyclists, great, get exercise and cycle but the health aspect of cycling is negated by cyclest breading in fumes by so much traffic built up going no were, is there not a better way of doing this? If there is no, then we're all in trouble, cyclest pedestrians and car drivers.

Motorists breathe in more fumes in heavy traffic than cyclists.

As I said, everyone is in trouble.

City centres just can't cope anymore. It's that simple. When I started working, many/most would commute by car. If this were to happen now, we would be screwed, just not possible. We are lucky in Dublin that the weather isn't so bad that actually cycling is providing quite a decent alternative and easing congestion for most of the year. These measures would partly be used to encourage more people from cars to other means.

The Quays hardly ever were a mecca of 50km/h uninterrupted continuous driving. Any morning I've ever been there it's stop/start and idling vehicles averaging about 10km/h... Not sure how a reduced maximum speed will increase non driving times in fairness...

You mean when the pedestrian has a green light, traffic has a red yet several cars still speed through?
Pedestrians should know to expect dangerous drivers all the time.

Yeah, all this talk of 30km/h limits causing traffic jams is just head scratching. You may as well claim that 5g causes traffic jams.

Why are people always pitting car drivers against cyclests, cars will always be driven true the city centre, inproved public transport, give car drivers options to so they don't have to drive into the city centre, people have been calling out for park and rides on the outskirts on all major rouths into the city for years but mostly this has been ignored, do this and traffic would decrease then more of the roads could be given over to the cyclists. Why is this always brought down to cyclists and car drivers?

There are park and rides. Nobody is forcing anyone to drive into the city and make traffic worse. You want to drive, fine. But don't expect to be given priority over other road users.
I love driving but it is impossible to drive with any enjoyment in Dublin. It is far, far more efficient to cycle which is why I commute by bike. However my choice of transport mode does not give wan*er drivers the right to bully me because they believe that roads are just for cars.
Cars are the least efficient of transport mode in a city yet most people who drive one believe that they should have more rights to road space over other road users. Thankfully this selfish mindset is being forced to change.

@Seth Brunel, There is a sever lack of park and ride facilities, there is some but they do not serve all rouths, Also as a cyclist it is disappointing to here this them against us attitude, there is terrible drivers as much as terrible cyclist both thinking the other does not belong on the road but that's the way it is. You are right when you say drivers are been forced out of the city both by reducing speed limits, adjusting light sequence which all lead to longer traffic jams, unfortunately a lot of people do not have a choice but to drive as there is not alternative to them, give people choices and they will use them, you can just make it more difficult for them and don't provide alternatives,

@truthvader, who votes for the greens, what's your point with immigrants? Don't be shy, say what you feel.

Point is they are a ready willing and grateful workforce of decent resourcful and ambitious who could be welcomed into the country and set up as taxi drivers to finally rid is of CIE and their **** bus service.

  • Registered Users Posts: 84 ✭✭Joey321

So you want to spend 29euro on a taxi instead of 2 or 3 euro on a bus, how does this solve the traffic issue??

I didn't introduce a them Vs us attitude.
However, it has been known for decades that having cars being the dominating transport mode within a city is not a good idea.
There are alternatives. They just don't suit people's view of what is convenient.

In the Times today, the councillors were quoted as stating that the Govt officials wanted these changes imposed and that all councillors were not in agreement......they want to raise the charges for clamping and towaway by 100%, so basically,it's a cash grab. A 30 KPH limit will be a cash cow for the Gardai, too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 84 ✭✭Joey321

Not saying you introduced the idea of them and us but there is that attitude out there and it over shadows the real issues, As a cyclist I would like to cycle through the city centre in proper cycle lanes but that's a long way off until they provide alternatives for car coming into the city and reduce the volume of cars coming in. These measures of trying to force drivers not to drive into the city centre by reducing speed limits and adjusting light sequences will never work without putting proper alternatives in place first, until then there is always going to be them against us attitude.

How will it be a cash grab if you follow the rules?

Maybe it's just me ,but single occupant cars in a city laid out hundreds of years might be the issue.
