Can I just confirm something. I don’t trust myself anymore with believing the bs that’s passing as policy in this country but are Harris and Holohan refusing to take WHO guidance on reducing the 2 metre to 1 metre?

Yes ignoring that and the advice to return kids to school before Summer from the WHO

Interesting article from Fergal Bowers I read this morning:

    https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/0522/1140072-we-need-clear-leadership-to-help-us-navigate-the-summer/

He doesn't come right out and say anything, but a few excerpts buried deep down in the article were intersting:

"Some of the overall messaging has been irritating for people. The difference between hardware and homeware being a case in point.
Adults are citizens, not children, and they do not take kindly at this most difficult time, to any feeling of being lectured to. Advice on whether people can put up new curtains, or should avoid talking (within a safe distance) with an elderly friend or neighbour is not helpful."

"People will expect that the emergency controls arising from public health advice should only last as long as absolutely necessary. Getting the balance right in this is perhaps one of the greatest challenges facing any Government, which also has to bear in mind the social and economic costs."

He tries to keep a balance and not go in any direction. But effectively we have our elected politicians hiding behind a CMO and NPHET, who have themselves well and truly covered with their ultra conservative approach - with no consideration given to our current economic, social and health trajectory (outside of Covid). - this is my own view btw at the end. Fergal doesn't give away much.
Greedy business people are aiding and abetting childish behaviour at the moment by those who patronise their outlets. Galway Farmers Market had to be shut down by the Gardai today because of blatant disregard of social distancing protocol by those attending. How can any government legislate against such blind stupidity and selfishness.

Make masks mandatory and return to normal as much as possible.
The government are blindly stupid and selfish, not the citizen's

Harris urges public not to get ahead of themselves

Minister for Health Simon Harris has warned that people should not get ahead of themselves, with the country not yet through one full week of Covid-19 restrictions being eased.

What are these people genuinely smoking? the country is still in lockdown and phase one is just a continuation of the lockdown measures.

Even phase two in June isn't much better. Honestly you'd think the country is partying on the streets and somehow falling out of closed bars and nightclubs drunk and not maintaining a ounce of social distancing.

Don't get ahead of yourselves by daring to go outside the 5km radius.

Is operation "Fanacht" coming back for the June bank holiday?

The language they insist on using while addressing Ireland's citizen's is nothing short of infuriatingly patronising.

The guys using those soundbites ain't exactly prime examples of efficiency at professionalism

The Gardai do love their gimmicks. So yes, we probably will. We had operation "slow down" yesterday... RTE reporting in their top story that someone was caught doing 130kph in a 100 zone. Shocking stuff.

    Investigative journalism at its finest.

Pulitzer award on the way I reckon for someone paid by RTE during this crisis

About as newsworthy as telling us that women are far more likely to wear thongs than men.

More than 1 in 4 women absolutely do not wear face masks. Unless I live in a part of Dublin that is some kind of bubble of uniquely heavy resistance to mask wearing , Dept of Health needs to go outside and have a look for themselves on that one

Coronavirus: Car rental firm Hertz files for bankruptcy after pandemic losses
The car hire company had lost all its revenue by the end of March, court documents show.

Despite being allowed to stay open as an "essential business", the firm was forced to close the majority of its branches when COVID-19 hit - including in the UK and Ireland.

The company lost all its revenue and plunged £15.3bn into debt by the end of March, court documents reveal.

It has also had to cut 12,000 jobs worldwide and put 4,000 more workers on furlough.

Hertz has filed for a Chapter 11 restructure, which means creditors will have to settle for less than full repayment of its crippling debts, but the business will still be able to operate.

It had already flagged major debt concerns in its first-quarter report released in May.

Who next? And don't tell me that it is a case of 'economy vs lives', a completely destroyed economy will cost lives; a lot of lives. And a completely destroyed economy is what we are looking at right now. We need to end this insane lockdown now. Right f**king now. Otherwise you will see a catastrophe you cannot even begin to imagine.

As Michael Stipe says - "Everybody Hertz"

Lockdown or no lockdown they were in trouble. People wouldn't be traveling or renting cars as much anyway

It doesn’t matter if companies go away, other companies will expand with extra employment when demand returns. That’s capitalism. Not so easy to reanimate the dead, a bit of perspective please.

They were $18.7b in debt by the end of March. 2 weeks of a lockdown didn't do that.

Them lumbering on accumulating more debt until collapsing further along the line may well have had a more negative effect on associated businesses that didn't run themse, ves in to the ground.

If the business is there then a new company will come to fill the gap or existing ones will expand. If they dont, then there wasnt the business to sustain them anyway .

The damage being done is staggering. Economic suicide. Everyone now knows we should have just Isolated the vulnerable (nursing homes, immune compromised etc) and allowed everyone else get on with their lives. But we’re so far into this nonsense that governments won’t lose face, so we continue with the charade. In 10 years time this will be known as the biggest overreaction in human history.

In ten years time we could well be dealing with a new pandemic and relying heavily on what we have learned from controlling this one.

We can easily do what you suggest but what if the virus mutates into a more virulent form? What if there are ongoing medical problems after having the virus as is being strongly suggested?

It could happen that if we open up too quickly that the virus could become rampant throughout the community, not too many businesses flourishing in that scenario is there?

It is easy say end lockdown, I am as frustrated as you are with it trust me...This is heading towards being worse than the 1968 Pandemic, and no one knows where it will end, dying out I hope...but I don't know and neither do you.

There has to be confidence in the market for that to work.
Business confidence has and continues to be destroyed and will take years to recover
