Match 5: Aretha Franklin - ah, 2 classics, I just like Aretha's more
Match 6: Nirvana - a great version from a great MTV Unplugged
Match 7: Communards - Long live the 80's pop
Match 8: Gemma Hayes - I don't think David Gray's voice suits the Soft Cell song

2025 gigs: Selofan, Alison Moyet, Wardruna, Gavin Friday, Orla Gartland, The Courettes, Scissor Sisters, Nine Inch Nails, Rhiannon Giddens, New Purple Celebration, Nova Twins

Aretha Franklin - Respect. Two of my nominations and a really tough choice, but Aretha just edges it.

Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night. Just prefer this cover.

The Specials - A Message to You, Rudy. Going with my nomination here.

Gemma Hayes - Wicked Game. Time for David Gray to say goodbye.

Aretha Franklin - Respect ---this is getting harder
Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night --- i'm a fan of this cover
Communards - Don't Leave Me This Way --- tight one as alwasy but this edges it for me
David Gray - Say Hello Wave goodbye - going against the grain here (again) but i like David Gray and love this cover.

Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night

Communards - Don't Leave Me This Way

    Gemma Hayes - Wicked Game

    Better song of each pairing.

    The ones left:

The Temptations - Papa etc. : An epic piece of soul.

The Communards - Don't etc. : Catchy disco tune.

Just after giving No Doubt - It's My Life - a listen. I had not heard their version before. I like it. It gets my vote.

The Clash - I Fought The Law. Sticking with my nomination here, although I suspect it might get trampled in this round.

Queens of the Stone Age - Outlaw Blues. Hadn't heard this before this competition, quite like it.

Joan Jett - I Love Rock N Roll. Again going with my nomination.

Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World. One of the highlights of their Unplugged session.

Johnny Cash - Hurt ; I love the original Nine Inch Nails version, but this is a superb cover

Queens of the Stone Age - Outlaw Blues ; Easily the better of the two here

Joan Jett - I Love Rock N Roll ; love both, but sticking with my own nomination

Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World ; another of my nominations and a cover that is far superior to the original

    My votes:
Johnny Cash - Hurt Vs The Clash - I Fought The Law - Like both, but this wins out for pathos and atmosphere.

The Fugees - Killing Me Softly Vs Queens of the Stone Age - Outlaw Blues - ABSTAIN

Joan Jett - I Love Rock N Roll Vs Mannfred Mann's Earth Band - Blinded by the Light - One of my few nominations left. Great piece of music.

Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind Vs Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World Wonderful acoustic cover of a David Bowie song.

Match 12: Pet Shop Boys - I like both, but have already voted a Nirvana song, so there you go

I listened to it since. I think I may have heard some of it before. Had I realised how brilliant it is, I would have voted for it earlier. Beautiful.
