    Match 1: Nirvana
    Match 2: Natalie Imbruglia

Match 4: One of my favourite Bryan Ferry songs ever!!!

2025 gigs: Selofan, Alison Moyet, Borderline Festival, Wardruna, Gavin Friday, Orla Gartland

Match 1: Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night ; love Nirvana, was on my shortlist, so glad someone nominated it

Match 2: Natalie Imbruglia - Torn ; pretty sure this was one of my nominations, just an absolute pop-tastic tune

Match 3: Ugly Kid Joe - Cats In The Cradle ; one of my nominees and an absolute cracker of a song

Match 4: Thin Lizzy - Whiskey In The Jar ; tough call here, but gotta go with Phil and the boys, they took a classic folk song and rocked it up spectacularly

    1. Nirvana - good version of an old blues classic
    2. Jose Gonzalez - always reminds me of that ad for TVs (I think) with the balls
    3. Jimi Hendrix - I hate Cat's in the Cradle
    4. Bryan Ferry - Don't get the love for Thin Lizzy at all

    Kolido,

Would it be a hassle to put a list of the songs at the end of your post? Much easier for us phone users to cut the entire YouTube section then select from the bottom list.

Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night
    - suits Kurt's voice so well when it gets going

    Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats
    - tough, but he took a great song and made a totally different great song

    Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe
    - it's the definitive version of this song now, it's awesome

Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in The Jar
    - was a lot closer in my head than I first thought, but have to go for the rock!

    Thin LIZZY, my nomination:)

Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night
    - It's Nirvana and they were the soundtrack to my teenage years

    Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats
    - I adore this version. As EN said: he took a great song and made a totally different great song

    Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe
    - This is more about the other song, I don't think UKJ did enough to Cats to make it a great cover.

Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in The Jar
    - I love Phil Lynott's voice in this one.

Will go Hey Joe to get it through as Cats in the Cradle is such a great song originally that it doesn't deserve the treatment that Ugly Kid Joe gave it.

Glen Hansard - Everytime ; hadn't heard this cover before, but its class so gets my support

Sixpence None The Richer - There She Goes ; doesn't stray to far from the original, but it's actually the version I prefer

Gary Jules - Mad World ; as much as I love Tears For Fears, this is the superior version of the song, always loved it

Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through the Grapevine ; a classic and already has a proven track record in these comps, wonder can it win another

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,638 ✭✭✭phatkev

Justin Bieber - Despacito - Got to give Bieber and his team some credit here, for many they may have created a monster, but goddammit they've got a near perfect summer pop tune
Happy Mondays - Step On - Intro to this song instantly puts me in a good mood, never realised it was cover
Gary Jules - Mad World - Love it, and not a huge fan of Metallicas cover
Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through the Grapevine - One of my favourite songs :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,470 ✭✭✭Ectoplasm

    Glen Hansard - Everytime
A new song for me but I'm not a fan of the other lad

    Happy Mondays - Step On
Didn't even know this was a cover but its a song that makes me happy

    Gary Jules - Mad World
I really enjoy the simplicity of this cover

Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through the Grapevine
    An absolute choon

Sixpence None The Richer - I didn't get around to submitting a list, but this one was definitely on the provisionals.

Johnny Cash - I prefer Gordon Lightfoot's version, but Marvin Gaye already won a thread, and this is a great song.

Justin Bieber , don't like him but it's an upbeat summer tune ,

Sixpence None The Richer , just prefer it to the original,

Gary Jules , great cover ,

Marvin Gaye , you've gotta love a bit of Marvin !

    7. Gary Jules - Mad World. A great cover version of a song that I didn't particularly like before.

    5. Justin Bieber - Despacito

Think all of the others are resolved. Also didn’t know Step On was a cover. My drinking song :(

oh, 9 and 12 very tough draws!!!

Match 9: Nirvana (one of my favourite moments of theirs, doing great justice to the original)
Match 10: Alien Ant Farm (not fussed by either of them, but I like Smooth Criminal - the original, that is. . .)
Match 11: Whitney Houston (overplayed for sure, but one of her best moments)
Match 12: Run DMC (groundbreaking collaboration!!)

2025 gigs: Selofan, Alison Moyet, Borderline Festival, Wardruna, Gavin Friday, Orla Gartland

Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World - one my noms, although I'm sure I wasn't alone

Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal - another one of my noms here

Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You ; I am a Megadeth fan, but never been mad about Anarchy In The UK as a song

Run DMC - Walk This Way ; a classic

    9. Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World. Prefer this version to the original.
    10. Steve Earle - Dublin Blues. Don't know the song, but it has to be better than the other one.
    11. Megadeath - Anarchy in the UK. The other abomination must die.
    12. Run DMC - Walk This Way. See 11.

Match 14: Sinead O'Connor (one of my nominations)
Match 15: Kim Wilde (classic 80s - and it was in my first ever compilation cassette that my local record store made for me, I was 14 at the time!!)

Trent Reznor & Karen O - The Immigrant Song ; great cover, plus I can't stand Take Me To The River

Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U ; Big fan of both songs, but Nothing Compares 2 U is just fantastic

Kim Wilde - Keep Me Hanging On ; Very tough call, love both songs, but gonna give it to Kim Wilde

The Killers - Romeo and Juliet ; hadn't heard this cover before, but it's decent enough so gets my vote, never been a fan of Louie Louie anyway
