In relation to the IT article yesterday stating the peak had probably passed, and we would see 400 deaths by August? Is this rubbish reporting considering the increase in deaths over the past 2 days?

We could see it within 7 days if we stay at the same level as the last 48 hours, so personally I think yes, that was a load of crap.

Not good enough especially for those flying from London or New York.

This is basic 101 of containing a second wave. That the CMO and Harris don't get this demonstrates very poor judgement.

It's astonishing the way the government is obsessing over Dubs traveling spreading the virus over the weekend (threatening fines, jails, the works). Yet they have no issue with the incoming flights from virus hotspots where the same principle applies a fortiori. Neither had they a problem with flights from Milan back in March as the pandemic was ravaging Italy. This is hypocrisy on a grand scale.

The uk was doing this weeks ago with people coming back from china and seemed v.effective

We need to do this....but have we capacity....or maybe could kit out old army barracks??

We have plenty of hotels. And we've been assured by FG supporters on here its only a handful of people coming in. Even a small travel lodge would do.

What some fail to understand (the HSE and Simon Harris among them) is once you let someone through an airport and outside, they are in the community. That means a lift from the airport with a relative or friend. It means sharing a house or apartment with someone.
Its very difficult for most people to completely self isolate and many can't or won't.

And the age of her. She can’t blame a not-fully-developed brain or raging hormones.

Let's be honest her brain may be fully developed , but its definitely damaged severely so.

Wonder who was minding the 3 kids while she was skulling her can's

Not good enough especially for those flying from London or New York. We can only assume that everyone flying from those two locations are covid infected. They need to be put in masks and gloves and bused to a hotel where they are kept in rooms for 2 weeks, with room service. Then tested and let back into community when negative.

At present they are allowed home to families and flatmates where they can easily spread the virus and then it can spread to community. Sure look at how the backpackers were greeted on return from south america, hugs and kisses all around. If a parent brought a covid 19 passenger home they would also be infected.

This is basic 101 of containing a second wave. That the CMO and Harris don't get this demonstrates very poor judgement.

I am sure they get it and I expect these measures to be implemented soon.

Just another example of clueless "experts" spouting nonsense.

Anyone with any clue about this would know we are at the bottom of the mountain when it comes to deaths. Once your ICUs and medical staff get overwhelmed, death rates rise rapidly.

We failed to close borders soon enough to civilian passengers. We still havent closed borders. We've missed every possible opportunity to stop this entering the country significantly and once its in a country in large numbers its almost impossible to bring it to a halt.

I'm bemused why many people think Varadkar, Harris and the HSE are doing a good job. A week from now people will see the truth.

According to the current Guardian headline "Scientists predict UK will be worst-hit country in Europe"

No lifting of restrictions in May, June or even July if that headline is true.

We'll have to wait for the UK to recover given the open borders we have (and want to maintain...).

My 85 year old father with a long history of terrible health (basically everything you can imagine including cancer, asthma etc.) lives with my mom (with even worse health including a month in hospital recently) has an appointment with an eye surgeon tomorrow.

The consultation is to follow-up a corneal transplant he had just before this whole covid-19 kicked off. He already delayed this follow-up appointment by two weeks and the doctor strongly recommends it given the discomfort felt. I had a long conversation with the doctor to discuss the risks, but given the potential risk of permanent loss of sight, it is hard to know what to say.

I made a huge effort to ensure my parents could live in proper self isolation and depend entirely on deliveries, which they have been doing for almost five weeks now.
Tough one. Is it a specialist hospital with no covid patients. I would probably go. Losing eyesight means losing independence especially at that age.

Really the decision at the end of the day is your parents and the consultants. So support it the best you can. Control what you can which is never going to be everything.

Last week I went to an emergency dental apointment during a pandemic. ie if the patient before you is shedding covid when a drill is used it generates aerosals. I rang ahead to see what protections where in place. Wore gloves/had hand sanitiser too. mask and protective eyewear. mask only came off during procedure. However, you need to know how to use these properly.
Spent so much time laughing at dentist who looked nearly like a spaceman in PPE.
Wish your parent the best of health.

Don't count on it. In any case the horse has bolted and is over the horizon at this stage. Any actions now would be late and no more than a PR exercise, like everything else.

Great to see how swifty this was dealt with.

I think you are so far off the mark there. We are far from being overwhelmed in ICU. We are probably in or around our peak now. I don't think our numbers will come down that quickly but I don't expect them to grow either. In another week we should be looking pretty good.

National park down south. I'm probably more vocal about this since I am one of 6 lads that are permanent so I am there a lot and I have 8 years experience in it so for some reason my corporate overlords think I need to be there 24/7. I doubt I am the only tourism worker who is experiencing this and yes, I realise how lucky I am to be even working at the moment.

Just wondering where that's all because a friend lives down in Kerry and while the park down there is open for walks etc, all information points and offices are closed according to him and he's under the impression that it's the same for all of the national parks.

This didn't happen today though. The world and his dog knew there was a problem there last week. Some of the young nurses were appealing on social media for anyone with PPE to help them as they were woefully short of it. The cases in Cavan took a huge jump on Monday. that was when the alarm bells started ringing. Sure it 's a serious development but i can guarantee you a lot of the hospitals have substantial numbers infected. Northern sound have been trying all evening to get a statement from Mangement. As yet no reply. I think the staff infection is nearer 35 than 70.

Loads of new accounts popped up in the last few months. I wouldn't take any of them seriously.
