Schools still going to Italy, similar story to the caller on newstalk about a group of 70 Students going next week.

    https://twitter.com/EireEndstv/status/1235137740162895873

My niece's school (not this one) is still going to Milian in 12 days and coming back with 10 Italian exchange students who will be staying with Irish families.

I’m hoping I’m not the only dumb dumb here but I’ll take one for the team.......

Could someone explain linear and exponential please?

    :embarrassed:

I remember doing it in maths and I gave the analogy of Humans V Rabbits reproducing.

The number just keeps doubling basically the more people to spread it the more infected. so 1 will infect 2, those two might infect 4.....then 8 ect

Linear is like 1 infects 1..

At least thats my understanding of it lol

    Good news.

I have a feeling that SK is gonna jump up though by a massive amount in the next day or two due to that church.

Interesting what Aylward is saying about China, both in that they are not really seeing asymptomatic transmission... In a roundabout way, hes saying you can only catch this from people who are obviously sick.

Also, I'm presuming China is gonna share these techniques for treating it?

I actually have confidence in what the government are doing, we are at the tail end of this so following best practice is the right idea. Paddy's day should be knocked on the head though.

BTW, whoever is going to the Script, just go, they are really good live. You can't lock yourself away, but make sure you wash your hands.

Meanwhile, another Chinese doctor died yesterday.

Maybe tell Dublin Bus they dont have to jam 200 people per bus during rush hour.
I doubt they have loads of spare buses to reduce crowds! Irish Rail can't do much either.
At best, maybe appeal to employers to stagger working hours to reduce pressure but you'll still likely be rammed together.

Listening to Sean O'Rourke this morning it seems that people are wiping down seats, trays, safety belts etc as soon as they board the plane.

The air must be very heavy with alcohol fumes if the whole plane is doing it, almost chokingly so.

Let's hope that the toasted sandwich does not cause any problems with all the alcohol fumes in the air.

We normally avail of the free inflight sandwiches/coffee/wine when we fly.
But when we traveled 2 weeks ago, we brought our own food.
It didn't seem logical to be making an extra effort sanitizing hands and still consume the inflight offerings.

Linear: arranged or extending in a straight or nearly straight line.
In this case it would mean a fairly constant level of new cases every day, EG 20 today, 22 tomorrow, 19 day after ...

Exponential: becoming more and more rapid. EG 20 today, 40 tomorrow, 70 the day after.

what kind of basic screening? (I was gonna take the pee out of screaming, but didn't bother as there's plenty of that in the thread already :pac:)

    Who should self isolate?

Restriction on large public gathering is easy & I also agree to an extent.

Just some cop on is not an action unfortunately, can you elaborate?

Havent they been taken temperatures with thermal cameras to check for fevers at major EU airports for weeks? Meanwhile the HSE is handing out leaflets in Dublin.

And at this stage I would recommend anyone coming from a hotspot such as Northern Italy to self isolate even if they feel well now.

But if only we had some medical professionals in this country then I am sure they could come up with a better plan then me, a random forum poster sneak posting on Boards when he should be working :pac:

At this stage any non essential large groups going to infected regions should be compensated to stay if not refunded

So society now pays people to mind their health and their communities health?

If they are going to an area for which there's a DFA advisory against travelling, their travel insurance could be null and void in the event of claims...

Can they also screen to see who took paracetamol? Otherwise taking people's temperature is pointless.

My sister in Oz has told that people are in full blown panic buying mode over there. Some shelfs empty, particulary toilet roll.

Media in full overdrive over there, new travel insurance policies are now halted all over the country.

    Over reaction ?

So Sis sent me this meme that's doing the rounds in Oz now :pac:

Linear growth would mean you get a similar number of new cases each day. If you graph total cases vs time here you will get a line (roughly), hence the name. So if you expect 2 new cases a day then after 10 days you would expect 20 cases.

Exponential means that the number of cases is increasing as time goes on. So 1 case after a day, 2 after 2, 4 after 3 and 8 cases after 4 days would be exponentially increasing. After 10 days you would reach 512 cases in contrast to the 20 in the linear case so it rises very rapidly.

If you graph total number of cases vs time in this scenario you will see the cases growing slowly at first and very quickly jump massively (Google an exponential graph and you will see).

Dozens and dozens now, 16 in Iceland alone ffs! Exporting to all corners of the globe

Interestingly Iceland now has the most cases per capita in the world after China!

Dublin Airport was very quiet this morning. Flight to London was half empty. Airlines are starting to cancel flights though and I fear for a lot of jobs in the travel industry.
Flight back this morning was only quarter full. A strategic cough and I could have had 3 rows to myself with little risk of coming within 1.5m of anyone

Having said that I was in a crowd of 20,000+ last night....
