Just came from my gym. A man using it has a dreadful snotty cold on him and wiped the slime from his nose with his gloved hands, then proceeded to use weight machines with same hands. I don’t believe at all that he has Covid-19 as it doesn’t usually manifest as a cold, but is indicative of the lack of hygiene consciousness that’s out there. On entry the gym was verifying g people’s contact numbers.

I'm in the UK, have noticed very little difference in people's gym habits. I'm wiping down dumbells with dettol wipes, but I almost feel like people are giving me weird looks for doing so. Gyms should really be one of the first places to close down as they're petri dishes at the best of times. For as long as they stay open I'll probably keep going though, can't lose those gainz.

Meanwhile in Southampton, UK, people have been warned not to touch pop singer Peter Andre.

Noticed the HSE website only lists China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Iran, Japan and the following regions in Italy - Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna or Piedmont, as areas where there is a spread of coronavirus. I was looking as I was at a conference in London there all last week and started feeling really under the weather yesterday and have been just awful today since i woke up. I don't want to assume the worst but I've never had a cough like this before. Just wonder if I rang the HSE helpline would they even give me the time of day given they haven't listed the UK on that list?

    Any opinions on this?

Feck sake, you can get the virus from newspapers now too?

I knew GDPR would be the death of us all.

Governments don't have to abide by GDPR where matters of national security or public safety are involved. The issue is the Irish government's attitude and competence.

I received a wassup yesterday. Seemingly it cannot survive above 26. The Italians are sighting this for complacency. Average temps will be at 28 by mid April.

*Wuhan virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed at a temperature of 26-27 degrees*

Seemingly this is why it is not Spreading in Thailand ( 43 cases ), Cambodia ( remarkably difficult to source data, and Southern Laos( no cases reported)

    https://laotiantimes.com/2020/02/04/why-laos-has-not-reported-any-coronavirus-cases/

I am not pretending to be an expert, but it is making sense about the temperature. I would love to know what is happening in Cambodia.

How does it survive in a human body which is 38°c ??

I don’t think they’d give you the time of day. Start by calling your gp.

If 10% of the population got the virus with a mortality rate of 3% (it's quite a bit less than that) then approximately 14400 people would die.

That would make it the biggest killer in the country

The mortality rate is up in the air as it stands. Over 50% of people who tested positive in Italy mild symptoms, so no doubt many people had it who were never tested. Most experts expect the measured mortality rate to reduce considerably.

Cancer and Heart disease kill close to 20,000 people per annum in Ireland. We've all lost loved ones to these illnesses, yet we don't panic or take drastic measures to avoid these illnesses ourselves. I'm not saying Covid-19 isn't of concern, but we should keep it in perspective.

We have to take it out of our annual leave if we have to quarantine. This is not a great incentive to tell the employer if you are at risk or your family are. I fear people will come in anyway. We already have people due to go on holidays to Italy who are undecided if they are going.

    Human body is 36-37 degrees.

So clearly this is not correct that the virus dies because the ambient temperature goes up.

The link between temperatures and infection spread is complicated. But one aspect is that some are more capable of surviving in a dormant state in lower temperatures than high ones.

A good point indeed, perhaps state governments should look into travelling soup kitchens.

Take over all the library, ice-cream, milk floats and vans, load them up with hot soups in polystyrene cups wrapped in clingfilm, and leave them outside anyones gate/door that makes some agreed distress signal from their window at a set time every day.

Either that (with couple of slices of bread) or slap of lumpy porridge would be the very, very minimum for someone to survive on each day.

If you've been to London, unless you've had close contact with a confirmed case I think you'd be at the very bottom of the list for HSE follow-on investigation... can you check in with others from the conference to see how they are doing?

The economics of self isolation will play a very big part.

This is true. In our office we all caught heart disease and cancer from one of the lads and yet we all survived.
