We covered plenty of ground on the latest Weighed-In Podcast, but I suspect the potential impact of the Coronavirus on the Cheltenham Festival is going to be a big story in the coming days. I was in touch with Nick Rust and he gave us the BHA's current position on the issue.

Second year in a row the anticipation has been destroyed by the like of this

Kevin Blake should probably stick to tipping 3 year old improvers. What did Nick Rust say exactly?

Blake should know better than scaremongering on Twitter.

This is a very real risk to the festival unfortunately.

Was looking forward to beating the Cheltenham blues heading away on holiday on the Saturday after it but today’s news has really pissed me off

The poll is a bit strange.
"Are you worried re Cheltenham going ahead - Yes, its a very real concern"

It would be a real concern if Cheltenham went ahead if Coronavirus was rampant.
Cheltenham happening is of little concern in a crisis.

Any game of that sport that doesn’t go ahead is a good thing.

My mother was in her 90s before I learned from her that two of her mother's sisters died in England during the 1917 Spanish flu epidemic (40 to 50 million died).
If this gets out of hand it could kill 100,000+ plus in Ireland.

    Your opening post if ambiguous.
    1) Are you worried about a coronavirus epidemic?
    2) Are you worried about Cheltenham being cancelled in an attempt to prevent an epidemic?

Be great if you, sting and antieam all got on a plane TO italy tomorrow....ye would only need one seat.......

Ruby Walsh was on the radio this evening talking about it. It wouldn't surprise him given the foot and mouth saga a few years ago that didn't affect equine animals.

I would be surprised if it was called off due to the threats of people mingling together, but not as surprised as I was that someone gave Ruby Walsh a radio slot on 2fm!

Sure they might as well start cancelling every major music/sporting event. Curfews next!

Tetrarch nothing to do with StingGoat in fairness now Roge.
He’s a complete flat and bloodstock man and probably couldn’t give a toss if Cheltenham was cancelled, but unaffiliated with that other sh!tebag.

Will racing go ahead market now up on the machine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,092 ✭✭✭The Tetrarch

I will watch Cheltenham and the Grand National.
Betting on the Grand National as a child and following a Grand National system was the start of my interest in form and analysis.
Over time I found I could not spend twelve months a a year following racing, and have concentrated on the flat.

If Coronavirus takes off there will be no horseracing, jumps or flat, and no sporting meetings or other large gatherings.
Cheltenham might take place before that.

1/3? What a price! Get paid out before the supreme and there's your ice cream money.

I would say Kevin Blake is having a conniption, I am never letting him away with this.

No word on his convo yet with Nick Rust? How the BHA are not releasing a statement is disgusting. Particularly as the spreads are offering them an opportunity to get on. This is worse than the stewards having a few quid on a photo.

€ 1,579 traded. If that grows overnight.....

Too early to tell yet.I’d say the next week will tell a lot of what’s to come. The rugby being cancelled and all soccer in Italy being played with no fans.hard to know what will happen
If there’s many more people diagnosed especially Europe I’d say the whole lot could be off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,218 ✭✭✭Islander13

If it even saves one life the right thing to do is call it off.

Cheltenham not important in that context. We can do it again next year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,008 ✭✭✭kksaints

A slight worry for Cheltenham is that there are some suspected cases in Spain near Valencia that are linked to fans who attended the Atalanta vs Valencia Champions League match last Wednesday in Milan. Its possible that they might cancel major sporting events as a precaution just to prevent large gatherings of people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭RivetingRoger

    Poll results are pessimistic
Ah lads, I can't believe this is happening again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

Still cant see if being cancelled unless there's strong guidance from The WHO or the British/Irish Governments stating all travel should be restricted.

Right now, as things currently stand, there's absolutely no risk of this. Way too much being made of this.

Ireland Italy rugby must be cancelled anyways?

But slattsy if its cancelled then all Glenloe bets would be voided rather than losers;)

How depressing would it be in work that Tuesday at 1pm, no festival, holidays cancelled.............

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 177 ✭✭tucker1971

Unless there is a major outbreak of cases in or near the cheltenham area I cant see the problem.
Premier league games on every weekend and no mention of curtailing.
We would have to see these been postponed first before I would worry about cheltenham.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭RivetingRoger

Premier league games are called off all the time, its far more fluid
    This isn't

I am agreeing with this. So much scaremongering goes on.

The rugger cancelation makes sense. Italy looks to have an issue.

If you go on the main forum the amount of panic inducing waffle getting spewed about. Some posters get off on it.

I have already seen a post in this thread trying to hold the festival responsible for "saving lives". Troll off there.

Unless the UK home office intervenes I cannot see the BHA calling it off, there is too many stakeholders affected by what could easily be a media frenzy for a few weeks.

How many of these teenage ski trips have tested positive?

    Crowds could be affected regardless.

It’s not so much cancelling the festival. Some People will start to read into the scaremongering and stop attending masses of large people if the cases popping up over Europe continue.

Once a few cases are confirmed in Ireland and UK that’ll hit the crowds.

Not nice to see as can’t let it dictate our lives but better than spreading the virus at a packed event like cheltenham.

Think you can lay it at 7/4 on betfair. Easy money for you if your analysis is correct!

"apparently", they have a contingency to reschedule: I heard these dates mentioned 14th or 21st April

“In the event that the Cheltenham Festival was postponed, either in its entirety or in part for any reason, there are contingencies already in place to re-stage it later in the season,” he said.

Nonsense! Do they think it will stick around for a few weeks and just go away by April?!?!

If it's bad enough to cancel on the original dates, not a hope will everything be ok by the 14th April.
The fact that the festival starts in 13 days time could actually be its saving grace.

On thing I keep thinking to keep me positive is that I have not heard so much as a whisper about the Tube being closed, schools, colleges etc so maybe, just maybe, we are over thinking this???
5m a week use the underground in London alone, far more potent threat than Cheltenham

It’s not the cheltenham area the concern lies with though.its all the people traveling to cheltenham from all over the place and congregating in one area. If one of them people had corona it would spread from there.
The next week will tell a lot
