I ring it's neck as often as I can tbh. They were built to run.

Recently upgraded to 20" staggered 405M wheels. Look well but a baxtard to clean.

Picked up this 2.0 TDI Passat last month - it was finally time to move on from the Leaf. Had intended to stick with EV, but pretty much anything that I actually liked, had the range I needed and the spec I wanted was pushing the budget too far, and I couldn't justify it in the end. Although home charging is a brilliant thing, I'm away regularly for work, and there was no support from my employer for staff charging units. So having to rely fully on public charging during these away periods - the inconvenience of this aside, I wouldn't really have been seeing the savings back. These factors were letting down many of the positives for me personally. Still, I'm delighted that I tried it, I learned a huge amount from having the Leaf for two years and I'm sure when I retire this, battery range and infrastructure will then be much more competitive with ICE.

A Passat wasn't what I'd had in mind at first, but it came as a very good deal with every optional extra I could want - except heated steering sadly. As a Japanese import, it also had relatively few miles put on. There's no denying it, it's heavy and noisy - a dog compared to an EV. In some aspects it is a step back. But I love how robust it feels on the roads, has all the power I need and it's a very comfortable place on long drives thanks to the high spec. After several round trips between Donegal and Dublin, average consumption is 4.9 l/100km. Do I like paying for diesel again? Absolutely not, but somehow I enjoyed being ripped off for fast charging even less. Let alone too few chargers, often queuing and getting at best 180km in the Leaf before. Only now, I'm doing easily 1,300km per tank. Obviously not being able to 'refuel' at home any more is a downside too.

I'm loving it so far, and still astonished at how practical it is. Fits anything and it'll be hard to consider anything non-estate again. Estates really need a revival in the EV market!

I've fallen in love with the car I pulled out of a field!! Non VVTI 1.3 early e11. Little rocket on the road and extremely comfortable for what it is, I'm gonna daily it for a few weeks. At the moment it's the most comfortable of all my cars. I really need to let one or two go and get a proper daily.

With it's much older Japanese cousin.

Totted up what I've fixed on this thing this year and it's - disquieting.

A set of reconditioned front brake calipers because the old ones locked up. Surprise left turns at motorway speeds were not fun.

New exhaust because the old one exploded. HKS exhaust sounds monstrous - loud without being obnoxious. Somone likely ran into the pipes blown off the backbox on the N11 somewhere. Sorry to whomever ran it over.

Rebuild the engine because - I thought the chassis was in good order and it seemed like a good investment. It was still in spec when it came apart. Got the engine street ported at the same time.

Then had both left and right sills and rear inner wheelarches done because 10 layers of anti-rust paint where all that was left in some places and it all just unzipped the moment it was touched.

The paint on them is just a few rattlecans of zinc primer and black anti-rust paint. The stuff actually works well enough - the shell had to rot through from the inside, rather than both sides. And it's a B-surface and I ran out of money.

It could still do with a few small things - there's a mystery water leak in the boot that comes from nowhere but fried the alarm, one of the rear lights is cracked after getting a whack and the passenger airbag on the dash cracked after getting a recall in 2019.

But it's finally run-in, and runs good - better than it has since it spent months parked in March 2020. Been stomping it hard around the south of Wexford and making yank tourists dive for cover, brapping and popping and banging. It's back to being the car I bought ten years ago.

All in all this year, it's eaten about 6-7k in parts and workmanship.

Not sure what I could've found in the bangernomics thread for the same money…. GT86?

    for the same money…. GT86?

    You'd never get a GT86 for 6-7k.

I have 13k in my head for a bit but I don't know why. There're very few cheap fun cars anymore. Most've now rotted to death, and the remains are being sold at a massive premium for what they should be.

Had the Passat for four years so far, and still going well.

Biggest gripe was the stereo. Very basic, so changed it to an Android one a few weeks back.

My resto continues on this MGF VVC.

A long list of work, preventative maintenance and upgrades completed but we're still not there.

I can confirm, it's bloody cracking to drive.

@Dartz - the leak in the boot may be coming from the tail lights. The gaskets often break down and let water in.

I got the Allure model in black. Never considered a Peugeot before tbh; but I fell in love with this when I saw it.

How do you find yours on fuel?

Lovely car - shame about the scratches on the outer rim of the alloy wheel….that would drive my OCD mad 😩

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,065 ✭✭✭fabsoul

Well wear, very nice in black too. avg. around the 40mpg. it would be a lot better but that mostly short spins.

was the alloy marked before you got it?

My workhorse. 2007 Accord. I'm the second owner. Bought it Feb 2015 for €4500. Current NCT is up in March 2025. 317k KM's on it. Has been extremely reliable with the only non-standard maintenance stuff being :

    Replacement Alternator last year
Small Weld job on the exhaust in 2022
Strange electrical fault that effected my full beams and radio. I've just unhooked the head unit - no hassles since but can't be arsed throwing money at it to get it fixed.

Will put it through the NCT again in the new year and see what happens. With the second hand car market being pretty crap in terms of value, I don't mind driving this for another year.

You and your German.(the number plate) 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭Titzon Toast

    What did it need?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,885 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

Some stuff was needed, the rest I just did:

    Required:

Valve cover gasket - done a year ago but now I have PCV issues which is common so I'm replacing the whole valve cover tomorrow as the PCV is integrated into it - DIY

Oil pan gasket - front subframe had to be removed to do this job so I gave it to Morrisons in Cahir

Turbo Inlet O-Ring replacement for front and rear turbos - DIY

Low and high pressure fuel sensors - DIY

Windscreen washer reservoir removed and algae build up cleaned out due to non-BMW windscreen wash being used by previous owner - DIY

    Other:

    DCT gearbox service - DIY

New discs and pads front and rear - DIY

BMW plastic charge pipes replaced with VRSF aluminium ones - DIY

To-do DIYs: rear diff mount bushing (changing to Powerflex polybush) / gearbox mounts / new oil suction jet for the gearbox

Apart from the above I've done annual engine oil services and general upkeep.

The Oil pan and valve cover gaskets get brittle and leak on the side of the engine where the turbos and exhaust are located. This happens on all of them.

Overall it has been much more reliable than my E92 335i. That had the N54 engine which then moved to the N55 and the M4 is the S55. The N54 was known for failing HPFPs (S55 has 2 of them) and turbo wastegate rattle. The wastegates on the N54 were vaccuum controlled whereas on the S55 they're electronically controlled and are not known to fail.

My 330e was sold, so I'm in this until at least next year.

iX2 xDrive30e M Sport, with loads of options fitted.

Not a patch on the 330e to drive, and only as quick 0-60. I don't like the exterior, but it is nice on the interior and has quite a few features the 3 didn't have, but give me a 330e over this any day.

It's that time of year again.... How have I been at this for over 10 years?!

For context, with the same video yet again (which I've learned is 20 years old this year):

    2023

    2022

    2021

    2020

    2019

    2018

    2017

    2016

    2015

    2014

This year is very different. For you see, every vehicle depicted in previous years I have worked on, some extensively, some exclusively, some are family members, some are company vehicles, but not this time. I’ve taken a much needed step back with this fiesta

Not that I’m not allowed (nor would I want to arrange that!), I genuinely have no interest. I’ve spent enough of my spare time on everyone else’s stuff over the past few years only to see my own stuff fall into complete disrepair with absolutely no clue how to proceed after x amount of years pushed into a corner (E34 and 300ZX springs to mind, maybe next year for the Z, maybe…). Being a leased vehicle I also have to stick to the schedule outlined, which also suits me fine. It really is the first time ever I’ve taken a vehicle to someone to change the oil in near 30 years at the tools, and I still feel disgusted about it!

Yes, it’s lovely to drive, peppy, roomy. It’s one of the last of them being a 22. The LED lights are amazing at night. It’s decent on the go-go juice and I can park in the loading bays as normal. But when I see the glossy Sync screen I realize how much computers have integrated into newer vehicles. As someone who works with computers daily, I know how wrong this can go in a flash! At least I have a mechanical handbrake and a physical key

I genuinely like driving this. I drive it all over the country. I can have all my equipment, tools, computers and enough room still for a few bags of coal, a few drums of kero and a weeks shopping. But it’s also made me realize I will happily stick to the older stuff I have. I still have the blue 607, which being an 03 is the most modern vehicle to my name. It, like the Volvo, is hideously complex compared to some of my other stuff!

So whether this vehicle gets looked at by the 40+ year experienced hardened proper old school mechanic mentored with grease nipples and contact points or the mouthy broccoli headed googling know-all nobody parts fitter clown pledging an allegiance to plastic dumped piles of dsg scrap with other equally dry sh*tes, I don’t care, it’s not my prerogative. It gives me more time to spend with the little lad as we work on my ageing fleet

Some of you who know me personally will see a bit of irony on the day I’ve posted this, but leaving that aside as always make sure you have a wonderful Christmas and a peaceful new year. I’ll drop in again sometime in the future
