Unless you can set "play something" to just play random episodes of the office, I'm not interested

I was just thinking how Netflix needed a random button today.

That "Play Something" feature sounds horrendous, for me at least. The last thing I want to do is watch a random show when I don't know the genre, the plot, the cast, what the reviews are like etc. Maybe there are people out there that like to take a gamble and don't really care if they spend an hour or more on a show that they find out they hate?

I've had that play something option for a couple of months now. I tried it once or twice but it didn't do much for me. Did they do something new with it or what?

I think it's more to solve the problem of indecision people face when they just end up browsing Netflix all night. I do think it would be better if you could configure it to say play something from your list, or whatever; it'll be interesting to see if the algorithm it uses is any better than the recommendations it makes which can be spotty.

Maybe you were part of a beta trial of the feature without knowing it?

When I tried it, it played the next episode of the Office from where I was and a documentary I think. It's wasn't stuff that was wildly off what I've watched in the past.

Tbf, you take a gamble everytime you watch something new. I've watched critically acclaimed stuff that has just bounced off me or randomly started watching something without knowing anything about it and ending up loving it.

I'd prefer a "Random choice from my list" to "literally anything on Netflix" because despite being quite picky about what I watch on each profile, and providing ratings on things I like/dislike, the Netflix recommendation system still offers me films and shows that I have no interest in - if they are Netflix "Originals". (The other one they keep trying to push - "People In Your Region Currently Like" - can also die in a fire).

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,714 ✭✭✭✭Earthhorse

It won't literally be anything on Netflix but they should definitely give users a little more control over what they see in their recommendations.

It's not new surely. I've had it for months just as you say, so have my other friends as they've mentioned it previously.

Where does it show in your Netflix; I've not seen it either on the website or iPad app. But maybe I'm not looking in the right place.

When you open Netflix and it shows you the profile picture of each user, it's under the user name.

Edit: Actually, it only seems to be on my TV app. Tried it on the browser in work and it's not there. Not on my phone app either. I'll check on the PS5 app later.

Binged 5 episodes of The Spy last night. Finish the last one tonight, can’t wait. Quality drama. Wouldn’t be Sacha Baron’s biggest fan but he is excellent in this.

Just finished "Press" with Charlotte Riley and Ben Chaplin - it was excellent. It's crying out for a series 2. Anyone else seen it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,745 ✭✭✭✭Charlie19

I remember the recommendation thing Netflix used to have where you'd say what type of film you wanted, it would take a few seconds then offer you a few suggestions. Don't think it ever offered me anything at all I wanted to watch. Maybe they have better algorithms now.

Not that long ago on the PC you could choose genre then list movies in order of relevance and pick to list from highest ratings but that option disappeared unfortunately.

If they could add an option to pick titles that you're not interested in, it would really improve the user interface.

The "Watch Again" section really gets on my tits as you could just finish a series or watch a movie and then the following night, it appears in watch again.
    Very annoying.

10+ years on and there should be massive improvements made to make their users experience a hell of a lot better.

    Still beats chart busters though;)

Yeah, a real take on how Murdoch influences politics and how the rags call the shots. Little wonder BBC wanted a second series, too close to the bone for their Tory bosses. :pac:

I thought Riley and Chaplin were brilliant lead characters.
