I feel like a big part of whether you enjoy Stowaway is whether you can accept not getting a clear answer as to how and why the stowaway ends up on board. That's not the story the film is interested in - the story being told is how the characters respond to the situation.

I thought it had a similar tone to the writing as The Martian, where some consideration has been given to what types of training and psychometric evaluation would be part of an actual astronaut training program. I appreciated that there weren't an endless series of contrived High Action moments, and instead the film sets up a simple dilemma and maintains a sharp focus on how the characters respond to it. The ending is low-key and somewhat anticlimactic, but as someone who's had his fill of boisterous Armageddon-like films, I appreciated that it stuck to its approach all the way to the end. (By contrast, I really like The Martian but the absolute nonsense in the last few minutes of that film are a frustrating load of bollox to watch after most of the film makes an effort to remain at least somewhat plausible...)

This was my major gripe with it too, spent the first three quarters of the movie thinking the main plot point was how and why the stowaway was there but towards the end it becomes apparent it's just a space survival story. I still enjoyed it though, it just would've been better if they had spent a little bit of time to square that piece of the story away. Also I find it hard to believe they wouldn't be carrying multiples of such a key piece of equipment, isn't the mantra of Nasa something like 'always have backups of backups of backups'

I do feel it might have helped if the commander had said something like "it doesn't matter how he got here, he's here and we have to deal with that" to draw a line under the question alright.

As for the Nasa thing, I was wondering the same but they repeatedly name the org that sent them as Hyperion and mention that the ship was designed for 2 so its complement of 3 was already pushing the limits of its design. Might just be me reading into it, but I assumed that was intended as a comment on private space flight initiatives and the sorts of cost cutting that might happen with e.g. an Elon Musk type in charge...

Also worth pointing out that however improbable the inciting incident of Stowaway was for the respective viewer, The Martian's own incident was simply, fundamentally impossible IIRC. Andy Weir admitted that try as he might, he couldn't realistically write a way to strand his astronaut on Mars, resigning instead on a sandstorm to do so - something that just don't / can't happen on the 4th planet.

I've usually no problem parking the brain and going with the flow of a fantasy however I do need to be brought along a little before investing the next hour or so.

Even leaving aside the Whys or Hows he ended up on the Spaceship how did he get into that space (he's a big bloke) AND secure the lid shut with screws?

And that happened at the start of the movie and I and those I watched it with were waiting on the explanation.

Mind you, it did give us a good laugh lobbing potshots during the movie as the 3 of us were copying Shamier Anderson's (in our opinion) poor performance.

    **Loved The Martian**

Shadow and Bone has an air of GOT about it, but no where near the strong story line of GOT.

Quite fragmented, I think. Maybe it will get better - on Ep. 4. Anyone else watching it?

Nearly finished part 2, it’s ok, not terrible but I’m not rushing back to finish it either

The strongest storyline is that of the night club/casino owner and his two side kicks.

The other linked stories and characters come across as weak and fragmented.

I have watched episode 1, quite fun but yeah a bit disjointed I agree. Prefer the dodgy casino side of things.
I did some reading after and seems it is almost an amalgam of characters from different books in the series so that might explain it a tad. I will give it a couple more episodes.

Why did the door of the oxygen room go flying off when Kendrick opened it up?

The oxygen room was on the opposite end of the tether from the module where they lived, with the solar power bit in the middle. The whole thing spun around the solar module to have artificial gravity where they lived, but that meant there was also artificial gravity in the oxygen room also.

    oxygen room=================solar================habitation

You questioned why the door went flying off but not why she needed to use a rope to climb down to the oxygen room door, same reason :D

I finished it during the weekend, I've seen the comparison to GoT but I think that's purely as they're both based on fantasy books!

I haven't read the books but I enjoyed the series but I'm a huge fantasy fan so I'm a little biased. It definitely feels rushed in places but overall, it kept my attention for the 8 hours and I'm definitely on board for season 2.

Finished Call My Agent last weekend - really enjoyed it. Thought it was a good ending for the series, but then read on Wikipedia that there's going to be a movie and a new series. A little conflicted, as I thought it was finished and they finished it well, but would definitely watch more of it. Hope they don't feck it up...!

I have one episode left, which I’ve been holding off watching until necessary! Excellent concept for a series imo; I’ve really enjoyed it :)

Yes, I saw that it was renewed for another series....! Kind of a weird move, but I suppose given that it was a sleeper hit, it makes sense to bank on it further... I also hope that they don’t make a hames of it :pac:

Been watching The Irregulars, it doesn't seem to know what it is, I've about an episode and a half left so will finish but not impressed

I went off it a few episodes into Season 2. It got a bit boring. Is it worth going back to?

Well, I finished it, so obviously I liked it. It's essentially the same story of the agency in peril told four times, but with major differences. Some people find the arrival of Hicham in season 2 to be grating, and it took me a while to stop being annoyed by him (can't bear manbuns) but every episode has a real-life actor taking the piss out of their celebrity and it's always funny and dramatic. The Juliette Binoche-starring finale of season 2 is glorious. YMMV obviously, but me and my OH really enjoyed the ride.

Yeah, I felt Hicham made season 2 more difficult. He was just such a di*k and got in the way of the other characters' chemistry. But he did soften a bit and become bearable. There are parts of seasons 2-4 just as good as in 1. Hervé is just brilliant throughout.

Just finished season 2 of snow piercer.

Imo it’s not near as good as season 1.
Even with such a big actor like S.B main billing the storyline lacked the punch of the 1st season.
    Felt rushed tbh
    5/10

Watched Dealer yesterday. French mini series about a camera man being sent into a really dodgy estate in Marseille to do a music video for an up and coming gangster rapper. quite a strange format as it's basically 10 episodes of 15 minutes. Enjoyable overall

I think that they are taking about the MMA one just by their comment, but maybe I'm wrong...I've seen and enjoyed both!!

Netflix is adding a Play Something feature for those who spending to much time browsing and can't pick anything to watch.
Netflix acknowledged today that choice can sometimes be too much of a good thing as the world’s biggest streamer officially unveiled a new user option called ‘Play Something’ — where “Netflix does all the work for you.”

“There are times when we just don’t want to make decisions. A Friday evening after a long work week. A fridge full of food but nothing jumps out. A family movie night where no one can agree. We’ve all been there. Sometimes you just want to open Netflix and dive right into a new story. That’s why we’ve created ‘Play Something’,” Cameron Johnson, the streaming giant’s Director, Product Innovation, wrote in a blog post Wednesday.

“When you hit the ‘Play Something’ button, you’ll be instantly met with a series or film we know you’ll love based on what you’ve watched before.” Or, with one more click, you can ‘Play Something Else’,” he said.

The tab sits underneath a user’s profile name, and on the navigation menu on the left side of the screen, and also on the tenth row of a user’s Netflix homepage – maybe for subscribers who still want to scan, for a bit, among the thousands shows and movies.

“When finding your next story, let the story find you,” Netflix said.

It could offer up either a brand new series or film, a series or film you’re already watching, that’s on your list, that’s unfinished but you may want to revisit.

I've used it a couple of times. Watched and enjoyed the first one (can't remember what it was). The second suggestion was a load of tripe!

I remember the recommendation thing Netflix used to have where you'd say what type of film you wanted, it would take a few seconds then offer you a few suggestions. Don't think it ever offered me anything at all I wanted to watch. Maybe they have better algorithms now.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

I think it helps if you thumbs up or down some of the shows/films you've watched - only started doing it recently and while the suggestions aren't perfect all the time they have got much better
