She just looks like a person with a nice smile having a fun day. If you see this lady, you and I disagree politically most likely, but you are looking a-okay.

So what would you say to those morons with their balloon?

That they are morons with a balloon.

This part is definitely true. Sure look at your one in the pic with the abortion referendum badges, she’ll still have the “together for yes” Facebook filter. It was over a year ago, it’s akin to supporting a football team.

Calling someone fat doesn't mean you hate them. Lots of people are fat these days.

I think we sometimes, especially online, import US political talking points that aren't relevant here and you're seeing that on both ends of the spectrum here. It's also very easy to get sucked into online bubbles that then turn out to have no traction in reality and you see that on both sides, left and right, all the time.

    So true.

Especially this whole "left" v "right" bull****. This insistence on categorising points of view with relation to a metric that is wholly out of date and was always inadequate anyway is stupid, demeaning, belittling, impertinent, brain-numbing, thought inhibiting, debate dumbing and has no place in any country with pretensions to being a generally educated civilised society. It endures, I believe, because of the bipolar political systems that obtain in the Anglosphere, especially in the UK and America.

Both countries have two party systems that are incapable of accommodating changing attitudes in a changing world. you have to align with one or other of the available choices: Republican (conservative/right wing) or Democrat (liberal/left wing) in America or Conservative (right) or Labour (left) in the UK.

There is of course NOTHING in the original agendas of either the Republicans or Democrats to justify such labels as are currently affixed to them. The Republicans were once a radical party of individual freedom and progressive values (anti slavery, anti trust, welfare state) whereas the Democrats were the party of slavery, secession, segregation and State Rights. The Democrats were the party of the ku klux klan yet are now the preferred party of most African Americans, one of whom became the first black president.

How did the tables get turned and one become "right wing" with the other being the "liberal leftie loonies"? They didn't. The choice is so arbitrary and the debate so dumb and the ability to articulate issues so polluted with label-baggage that issues that should not be ideological, such as climate change, are now being forced into a dangerously inappropriate prism of Left v Right partisanship.

Response to the scientific reality that man made climate change is a serious issue affecting our planet should be informed by fact and reason, not ideology, but instead it is being portrayed as a left v right issue. Just see even on this thread how some lame-brains equate opposition to Trump or support for gender equality with "tree hugging"! What the **** has that got to do with anything?

That's just by way of example. But look what the "left v Right" methodology of political discourse is doing to both Britain and America. The biggest issue facing Britain is its relations with the EU yet it is entirely unable to articulate this at the ballot box. Because not only the country, but both major parties, are hopelessly split on the issue and in a two party system such a division causes the whole system to break down.

In America, it has allowed the rise to power of a buffoon that is quite frankly a disgrace to the human race, not just "privileged" white men.

And seriously, do you think that the image of a ranting harridan screaming at men to know their place is going to cause many of us who voted to Repeal the 8th to change our opinions? Yeah: she's a fruitcake, a loony, a parody. But not like any of the people whose more measured and rational arguments helped to make my mind up.

Because the right can be described in the same way, more so even. Trumpists are extremely cult like. Then you have followers of the likes of Shapiro and Peterson. The far left can be cult like but when it comes to the right it's a much bigger proportion of the spectrum.

The far anything tend to be cult like. The further away you get from center - left or right - the more likely you are to follow blindly rather than observe and inform yorurself.

This is what I'm talking about. You can agree or disagree with some or all of what Professor Peterson says but what is the point of labelling him "right wing"? What does that even mean in his case? Sure, he's critical of what he calls "the left", which distracts from much of what he says but calling him "right wing" doesn't clarify anything.

(I'm presuming you're talking about Jordan Peterson and not the Australian corrupt, racist, bigot, autocrat Jo Bjelke Petersen.)

There is no mention of racism in the article
There is no mention of illegal immigration in the article
There is no mention of jobless protesters in the article

Can't dumb it down any furhter than that.

    /sigh

If you actually read what posted you'd see I made the comparison of having a placard saying be a good African and go home would be considered racist but saying the same with the exchange of African for yank is perfectly acceptable. Are you following so far or shall I draw a picture?

Lesley Mkoko is an illegal alien, who has no right to be in the country but the likes of the Irish Independent will celebrate him regardless of the fact he broke Irish and international law on refugees and displaced persons.

Jobless protesters? Look a the group of degenerates on a Thursday afternoon with no job to go to. Did I strike a chord, were you there with your unemployed communists comrades?

Now go off and play with your crayons.

I was looking at the pictures again. Quite a lot of effort gone into making some of the masks that look like Trump. Impressive!

But why do so many of the protesters have the same fringe? Like...why are these blunt short fringes so common amongst these people?

True, but there is a bigger proportion of the right that seem to have moved away from centre. From the growing popularity of AOC and Sanders in the US, it looks like the left over there is moving the same way, just slower.

I didn't call him right wing. I think he is more right than left but his beliefs seem a bit more nuanced. His supporters, on the other hand, tend to be very much right wing, without the nuance

I remember watching a video years ago by Neil Degrasse Tyson. Line that sticks with me is "that's what we want in life...we want to feel connected, like we belong, a participant in the goings on"

    https://youtu.be/9D05ej8u-gU?t=111

This is that sense of belonging and connectivity. Most people have family, friends, jobs, hobbies to do that but these people use this as theirs.

They're morons. They don't speak for the entire country even though they like to pretend they do.

That 'check your privilege' nonsense is not going to wash in this country. Whatever privilege we as Irish people have was hard fought for by our parents, grandparents, great grandparents etc.

What you're essentially saying is that we are privileged. And that it's ok because someone fought for it long ago.

Lets not forget the time their employers kindly let them out from their jobs to 'take back the city' so they could stop people like me from getting to work in order to be able to pay tax so I could pay for all their free houses.

Another well educated trump supporter reply.

An illegal immigrant is someone here illegally. A person who is here as an asylum seeker isn't here illegally & are not illegal immigrant or illegal alien. An asylum seeker is perfectly legal here in Ireland till they are either granted asylum or sent home.

If you don't have a dictionary in your house you can look up the meaning of words on the Internet. Internet can be a learning toolkit & doesn't always have to be used for negative hate speach and porn. :)

Lol hate speech!!!!! Leftist class 101 in trying to silence someone who's saying something not progressive. You people are hilarious! Hate speech is pointing out inconvenient truths to morons apparently.

Please explain how Lesley Mkoko came to Ireland from Swaziland.

If he's claiming asylum he had to do so in the first country without war he arrived in. That was not Ireland. There is no war in Swaziland so what was he fleeing? So he's just on the make using the asylum system to try and circumvent Irish and European immigration law, he's just one of 10,000's doing the same thing.

This is why the UN immigration pact surfaced because international law prevents this kind of illegal economic migration.

Hence he's is both a criminal and a thief. An illegal alien who should be deported forthwith.

So take your dictionary roll it up good and tight and ram it up your arse.
