    - So you need to buy the Virtual Desktop app for Oculus Quest specifically (€20)

    https://www.oculus.com/experiences/quest/2017050365004772/

    - Once installed, head over to Sidequest and install the Virtual Desktop "patch" which will allow you to play Steam and Oculus VR games

    https://sidequestvr.com/app/16/virtual-desktop-vr-patch

    - Install the Streamer app on your PC

    https://www.vrdesktop.net/

(set it up with your Oculus username)

    - Run an ethernet cable from your PC to your 5GHz router.

    - Connect your Quest 2 to the same router via 5GHz wifi

    - Start the Virtual Desktop native Quest app and it should pick up your PC

    - You don't need the Link cable at all, the whole idea of VD is to do away with cables.

Cheers Mate - I'll give that a go. Much appreciated

Does HL: Alyx ever go on sale? €50 is a bit steep.

It goes on sale regularly, I think its usually 25% or so off.

I might go for a DAS and 3d printed adaptor for the Quest 2.

Is this the best place to source the DAS? https://www.vive.com/eu/accessory/vive-deluxe-audio-strap/

and where can I buy the adaptor (from a Brexit-friendly locale)?

ive been really interested in setting my quest 2 up as a remote screen device for streaming normal games from my pc. Tried virtual desktop but found it had weird frame hitching problems every 2 seconds unless i turned the bit rate way down to like 10 which led to a fuzzy/blurry mess of an image. As ive been using my nvidia shield tv on my tv i decided to try sideloading the moonlight (basically an android workaround for nvidia gamestream) app onto the quest, I am able to force a desktop stream of a 4k image @ 150mbs bitrate . Works beautifully, playing cyberpunk and tbh bar the obvious visual oddness due to lenses and the discomfort aspect of the stock strap its running and looking identically amazing at 1440p in game res. Also tried running my yuzu emulator (switch) playing zelda botw, perfect as well.

I will say for using your desktop VD is the better option (free screen movement really aids text clarity) but again I'm blown away by the uses this thing has outside of vr gaming.

I love playing VD in the "nighttime apartment" environment. The cars moving outside etc... really cool.

Lovely apartment too... could imagine it's a great one to play streaming games in... or the IMAX of course!

Does it really feel like like you're watching a big screen when you do that? What are the cinema apps like?

Skybox VR is currently free on Quest. Grab it while you can!

    9.99 here too

I think there's cross-buy for it now so maybe Doge bought it on the Rift and therefore it's showing as free on the Quest? Just guessing as it's showing as a tenner for me too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,656 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

What's annoying is that it was free for yonks! I have it on my Quest 1, but not my Quest 2 as I haven't linked my (legit) Oculus account with my (fake) FB account.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,972 ✭✭✭Doge

    Sorry about that lads. :(
A few weeks back I added it for free on the Rift Store.

Must have become crossplay recently as VanZan mentioned and it came up as a free on the Quest store when I was browsing last night.

Time to celebrate this acquisition with VR Porn I guess! :pac:

How'd you get it for free on Rift store if you didn't own it on either Quest or Rift?

I'm pretty sure it was free on the Rift Store but not on the Quest store until recently?

I am 90% certain I did not buy it for Rift as I wouldn't really use it on Rift anyway.

I'll try and double check my history.

It's not showing in my purchase history anyway as free stuff does not show.

hmm I'm pretty sure it's been priced on Rift for a while now

    https://odeals.net/game/217/skybox-vr-video-player

It had a recent price drop and it's possible that it was mistakenly made free for a few minutes... and you happened to be looking at it at the time! Mad coincidence if so :)

It could have been when I got the Quest 2 last year so that I added it. I see that website only tracks back as far December.

I swear I'm not making it up! Haha :pac:

It is free on Oculus Go.. and maybe you got it free that way a long time ago when they did the freebie crossbuy update on Go / Quest apps?

    You had a Go yeah?

It defo wasn't free when the Quest 2 came out as it was one of the first apps I wanted to download when I got mine

Actually here's the post about when it went priced...

Is it any use. I only recently start watching movies on Bigscreen. Is the tenner worth it or are they much of the same thing?

Do you mean 10 euro to rent a movie?
A lot of them cannot be purchased in Ireland due to licensing restrictions.
I used to host movies on here including 3d movies from my Blu-ray collection and they look fantastic in VR, much better than the glasses in the cinema which darken and distort the image, in vr you get the full brightness.
If there's some interest to watch movies in multiplayer I can do it again sometime.

I have Pigasus on my Quest 2, which was free when I downloaded it, but I can't seem to find the "Lite" version any longer.

I think perhaps the free version was removed in December. See if you can download it by searching for "Pigasus Lite".

It's decent, though Skybox is very good.

The main thing that Skybox has over the others is the ability to stream from your PC using it's own streamer app: https://skybox.xyz/en/

Both Skybox and Pigasus can play files locally stored on the headset though

Nah he means the tenner to buy Skybox... vs just using the free Bigscreen app to play movies uploaded to the headset

If you only have a 64GB quest / 2 and like your video quality then the RavPower FileHub is the perfect gadget for streaming from a USB drive or external hard drive or SD Card to Skybox wirelessly:

    https://www.amazon.es/RAVPower-Port%C3%A1til-Compartir-Inal%C3%A1mbrico%E2%94%82Pendrive-Repetidor/dp/B07N2QLHL3/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?dchild=1

It has a 5Ghz connection and streams 4k content and Blu-ray rips flawlessly for me, even back when I was using the Oculus Go.

Haven't tried anything crazy like the HEVC rips but I've tried rips that were over 20GB in size and it's flawless.

It's like a Swiss army knife portable router, you can plug an ethernet cable in a hotel room or anywhere into it and turn it into a wireless access point.

And more info on the Skybox mystery, I definitely downloaded it for free on the Oculus Rift Store on my PC god knows when, back when I had my Rift CV1.

So it must have went cross buy since September as it came up as a paid app for me then, that was the last time I checked and I posted about it here.
Had it on the oculus go also but the go isn't included in cross buy.

Hope that clears it up! ;)

    Correct :)

Just to note, I can stream movies using Bigscreen, also In 3D, I use my local media server and I’ve been doing this using Bigscreen to personally watch and host movies. It’s been flawless. I’ve steamed a 50gb 3D movie with zero lag.

Is there any additional benefit to using Skybox over Bigscreen?

Skybox can play 180 and 360 degree videos and can figure out what type they are automatically putting you into the correct viewing mode.
It can read files from SMB shares also.
That's pretty much it I think.
