Yep and he's registering within the margin of error in the polls....go PC indeed! He, you and the others in the 1-2% are welcome to each other, the rest of society will get on fine without you

And Clinton had the election wrapped up with a very comfortable margin if you were to believe the opinion polls in the run-up to the US election. Nothing is certain until the ballot returns are confirmed.

Casey stands to get an uplift from protest votes because he's come out and said something that most are terrified to even approach, never mind discuss or share opinion on.

The reaction of the other candidates is perfect demonstration of that - straightaway they were outraged, branding him a racist, some kind of evil monster, someone who should be stripped of all credibility and removed from the race to the Aras simply for sharing an opinion.

Not one person has attempted to refute his points through debate, to rip apart his points and make them, and by connection him, look utterly laughably ridiculous against opposing arguments, instead every single one has tried to just have him simply silenced.

The overwhelming reaction today across TV, Radio and Social Media is near universal agreement with his statements which, to be honest, I don't think has ever come across with such resounding strength in any other election before. It is genuinely astounding. Which of the candidates is most out of touch with Irish society?

Worse, I suspect this reaction of absolute horror and condemnation will have the opposite desired effect of those opposing his views. And the harder the horror and condemnation is displayed, the stronger the potential for the protest vote to increase.

You don't convince people to come around to your way of thinking by ridiculing them, calling them names, trying to humiliate them or even making them afraid to share their view in the first place, you do it by allowing them to make their statements, listening to their views and then refuting their points by presenting solid, sound and compelling arguments such that their argument sounds ridiculous and illogical in comparison.

People who have never kissed, had a pint with, had a friendship with or shagged a traveller to get outraged.

Racist racist racist. That's all the arguments. And of course, it's always the local authorities fault.

Are travellers prevented from buying land? Can they not buy land and put their caravans there?

The way Casey expressed his opinion had discriminatory connotations.

However, there is a legitimate debate around the definition of ethnicity and whether the travelling community meet, ever met, or ever will meet that definition. It is an academic discussion, and has nothing to do with the value of your houses when a traveller family moves in or the houses in Tipperary.

On the other hand, the academic discussion has got lost, because those who would make a fair argument that the travelling community does not meet the definition of ethnicity are immediately denounced as racist and the argument gets lost.

Take a look at the 2016 census.

Of 30,000 travellers in Ireland, 2,000 of them are employed. That's 28,000 of them who, I presume, are living off the rest of us. If they were to be their own society, it would fail magnificently because there wouldn't be enough of them paying tax to adequately support the rest. Why should the average Irish worker have to be paying for the lifestyle of an ethnic minority who contribute just about nothing to society?

And for those of you saying 'it's not all' and linking articles to college graduate travellers and the likes, why are you supporting a societal grouping in which getting an education is so rare and such a big deal? A huge portion of the Irish population have degrees. With the supports available today it's absolutely not an undoable feat for anyone to obtain a degree.

Casey has my vote. I'm not under some illusion that he will win but will give him my support none the less.

    Peter Casey is bang on.

I wonder if any of the do gooders who are attacking him would have any problem if travellers parked up outside their houses ?

Outside of him disliking tinkers, is there anything else about him that would compel people to vote for him? Or is it just the tinkers thing?

According to Wikipedia, he rattled Michael Ds cage for “extolling the virtues” of socialists Castro and Hugo Chavez.

It was a cert requiring 100 hours of study, not a college degree. Lovely gowns though.

Still waiting for an answer to this.

Why do most people online and in real life conversations have negative things to say when it comes to Travellers? Has the reputation just manifested itself from nowhere. Where are these negative perceptions coming from? Are they some sort of boogeyman? Is everyone in the wrong?

Besides the controversial statement, why are any of these jabronis even going for the presidency? It's a dead race already and was always going to be. You'd think so-called "Dragons" would realise these trends ahead of everyone else. Then you've the Sinn Fein candidate saying she'll wear a poppy. These folks are trying desperately at the last hurdle to conjour up something, anything but the other wee fella in the big house already had it wrapped up before the starting gun went off.

Props for using the word jabroni. Great word.

I'll answer for myself. Every interaction I have ever had with travellers has been negative. Starting at the age of 8 when I walked past a halting site and was beaten up for being a guards son up until a few weeks ago at the age of 40 when some travellers tried to intimidate me into getting roofing work done every single interaction has been negative.

My wife also, she worked in retail, every experience was negative. Had a glass bottle thrown at her head once by a group of travellers.

I worked in security for a few years, again every interaction was negative.

I don't know what to say, I have never had a 100% consistently negative experience with any group of people except for travellers.

The theory being that if enough people hold a prejudice, it must not be a prejudice, but something that's entirely the fault of the group the prejudice is against?

As a mental exercise, try that line of argument for various different groups, in various different countries, at various different times, and see how it sounds.

Ideally not out loud, mind you.

Or... more to the point, try it in this country, with many other groups and see how it sounds.
