it doesn't matter a jot what the weather was like 6 days before any particular date here between mid Aug to May

as for the location, i suggested they should have opted for a soft indoor launch and saved the publics money for a larger showcase Paddys weekend where theres a slight chance of better weather, Feb should have been a no no though

They did have a soft indoor launch. Because of it's limits regarding capacity, it was for delegates, sponsors and press only. The outdoor Lauch was to include the public.

2020 is not really Galway's year, is it? Who put the curse on it?

More concerning about that is the idea of meeting councillors individually to discuss rubber stamping the money......... what could possibly go wrong there??

Asking for another 2.5m when there is so much uncertainty due to the virus seems daft. Have they even explained why they are 2.5m short or is it just a matter of putting the begging bowl out after the event has already begun?

Galway 2020 is laughable at this stage. I'd be removing every mention of it around the place and just hunker down for a few months. Just forget 2020 ever happened for Galway, it's an embarrassment from start to finish..

It's a pity, a lot of local artists had gigs on this year, so the fact that 2020, it having a difficult year means some of the local creatives are having a difficult one also. Paddy's Day was an important income stream for a lot of creative workers.

I know we had a 2020 element included in our work & St. Patricks Day events. We tried to work around it, and likewise, we went digital but it's not the same, and the impact doesn't feel that big and the income stream to offset costs was lost.

There's people who have already worked for the 2020 projects and need to be paid for work done too. Hope that happens.

Galway's year as European Capital of Culture has been further impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Most staff at the company set up to manage the event have been temporarily laid off and the contract with the Creative Director for Galway 2020 has been ended.

While the board of the company is still hoping to run a "contracted" programme of events, many productions have been cancelled already and others will be severely curtailed.

I would love to see a set of accounts up to this point as to where has specifically been spent so far. This is a 35+ million euro project. Where does it go to if this whole thing is folded?

This thing getting pulled because of the coronavirus would be a blessing in disguise because the crowd in charge are making a mess of it. It could save Galway getting a bad name because of the clowns in charge. A bullet could be dodged yet if the plug is pulled.

..... Are the board of the company continuing to receive their salary ?
As they say " the captain is last off the sinking ship "..
This is going to put the Volvo ocean race fiasco in the shade .

Galway 2020 has been badly run from the beginning. Once they got rid of the Artistic Director there was no hope.

I am really glad that we are not in debt for a further 2.5 million thanks to the City Council (or some of them).

Where did the money go ?

What were all the staff doing except promoting Galway 2020 without a view to content ?
Little local involvement , why ?

Who would think of having an opening in the swamp in February ?
just a few questions...there are many more.

I'm sure the English company will get a nice severance payment.

Extremely embarrassing for the city, even the bidding process remakes of shady. Everyone involved or supported this fiasco should be ashamed

This had been a right shambles up to now, they could save a lot of face by burying the project now, but no, it will more than likely be dragged on and flogged to the bitter end in typical Galway fashion

pretty much, most of staff layed off and managing director fired, any event that may still go ahead will be at best significantly scaled back. Was on RTE news last night

Think they are hoping to stage it later this year and in the first half of 2021 ...... Pending approval.

Is there any hope that Galway will ever be able to host any sort of festival ever again. :(

No, the Arts fest is done, Races, Jazz, Cuirt, Tulca, Baboro. Yep all done, no festivals ever again, ever. Tremendous loss, tremendous.

Well at least we can recoup all the public money that went into it now that it is ostensibly cancelled.......

This was my view exactly. The shutdown due to the virus has given them a get of jail free card. Galway 2020 has been a running joke for a long time now. Interesting that some people were asking if it was being cancelled. Was there ever that much to cancel..?? I'd say whatever money was put into it has disappeared long ago

Yeah they were going to hand back a cheque but with social distancing and all that had to be cancelled.

And where are they going to magically get the money for it in the future?
