He's referring to your sarcasm re the village Hall that you wanted to keep a secret. Same with ECO. Avoid letting everyone know how good it is. I think everyone is suffering from post-Picnic exhaustion.

Hope it was a good one for you.

Ah okay. Had an amazing weekend but missed the boards meet up.

    The good:
    - Thought The Strokes were brilliant, loved every minute, what a back catalogue to choose from. Plus they were extremely tight for a band that don’t have a regular tour schedule. I also seem to be in the minority that liked Julian’s sarcastic smart arse-ery. A headline act taking the piss out of the cringeworthy ‘Ole, Ole, Ole’? Yes please! Then again I like my rock stars to have some arrogance about them, nowadays it’s a pleasant change from the “aw shucks” false modesty

Couldn't agree more! He was the most natural front man I saw all weekend and i thought he was hilarious. "I'm contractually obliged to ask if you are having a good time?". Fecking ole ole deserves to have the piss ripped out of it. So sick of hearing it at every gig. And they properly fooled people with the encore too. Half the crowd had left.

What's this about Groove Armada, were they a last minute announcement or something, I had no idea they were playing and the Four Tet set was a live set as I recognised some of his own material. I just think he was trying something quite different, he was letting the sounds do the talking, his Life set in 2014 was using pretty mind boggling visuals but I still enjoyed this one big time too.

NME done a piece about his minimal light setup. https://www.nme.com/blogs/nme-blogs/four-tet-brixton-academy-2018-review-2388943

They tweeted something on Wed/Thur about seeing Kevin Kilbane at EP but I heard nothing more until an earlier poster mentioned it today.

We saw the tweet that they’d be around that weekend and when we got to the picnic we heard whispers of needing tickets to get into their Taphouse set on Saturday afternoon. Did nothing about it but happened to walk past there on the way to Four Tet on Saturday night and couldn’t believe what we were seeing! Maximum 150 people there! They were unreal. One of the most memorable times at any EP for me

What a weekend! 9th Picnic and one of the best for me.

Arrived late on Friday but parked up quick enough before zipping through the wristband exchange and up to the Greta campsite at the back of Joplin. Avoid this campsite at all costs: very clean, lots of room, sound neighbours who became festival friends, lovely lush grass and no noise. Nothing to see here, move along...

I liked the new Freetown area and agree with previous posters it has potential for more. Could it be used for more dance and electronic acts after midnight? Caught Amelie Lens on the Friday night there and boy did she not disappoint! She was relentless with the driving techno and the high-vaulted tent ceiling gave it that warehouse feel. The noise was deafening and it was like a physical force and she just kept on cranking it up as she progressed through her set. 10/10 and the highlight of the weekend for me.

Big crowd at Billie Eilish and enjoyed her set like everyone around us. No issues with crowd control, however, we were near the back in front of the stands.

Missed the boardsie meetup but I'll make a special effort next year.

The Rave in the Woods was decent both nights I went. Brilliant, random chats with the party people present: I never met so many amateur meterologists on the Friday night trying to predict when the rain would arrive. Moved on to Transmission later on and it was a great spot under the flashing UFO's and the sheets of driving rain.

Years and Years were perfect during the afternoon and went on to see Caught Charli XCX in the Electric Arena. Memories of the crowd bouncing up and down in waves to "I Love It." Magic. Caught some of Freya Ridings who was a goddess belting out the tunes. Maverick was also a good showing.

Richie Hawtin was sublime in Terminus and enjoyed a bit of reggae in Trenchtown although it was sparsely populated. Caught a few acts at the Salty Dog but can't remember who they were: all I remember was dancing along with everyone, bit blotto at that stage.

Had to leave on Sunday due to family commitments but throughly enjoyed this year's offerings.

The jacks were the cleanist I've seen at any festival. Queue times into the main arena were down on last year and food and bar queues were alright. Wasn't overcharged all weekend. Didn't see any trouble or agro this year. Yes, plenty of people drunk and high: one girl maybe 16/17 rushed out unconscious by four stewards at Billie Eilish but nothing worse than I've seen in previous years. I do think there could be more acts in Terminus as it did take a bit of the strain off the main arena. More people sitting outside tents this year listening to gigs than I've seen in some years which was good. Didn't feel like a sardine like in previous years.

There's more to tell but I'm drained, in a good way. I'll be getting tickets on Saturday for next year. :-)

Some great reviews there folks, I went over Friday evening to get tickets sorted, ended up doing a 6km walk from Yellow Car Park on roads around to be able to get my ticket but you live and learn :D

Another great EP after missing out on going last year, I stayed in Pink Moon Saturday night and was great setup as usual, went home Sunday for a hours before coming back in with partner and 5 year old that loved little picnic.

Only thing that annoyed me was Friday afternoon and hearing people talking of the doomed rain coming and yellow weather warnings, some media stories linked the yellow weather warning out west to EP which was unfortunate and caused confusion. The only other thing that amazed me was the lack of clothing of people late Saturday and Sunday, they must have caught their death :p

    Wrecked..!!

5th picnic and even though it is an absolute monster fest at this stage, found the whole event well organised, safe and sound. Left on Sunday due to little one starting school Monday and tbh in hindsight was happy enough doing that. Sunday definitely is a hectic day up there.

    Music Wise..

Amelie Lens....Wow getting on in years now but someone mentioned a warehouse feel to terminus and was spot on. Incredible atmosphere.

The Viagra boys, brilliant front man and huge sound including sax. Reminded me of the stooges, no higher praise for a rock band.

Maverick Sabre....don't live to far from New Ross and found him really overwhelmed with response from audience. Real genuine lad and what a voice.

Metronomy....Wife loves them so tagged along....really tight band and the Look was epic.

Four Tet.... Planet, Lush , Only Human and Opal in total darkness. Still not the better for it.

Enjoyed the thread all year and endless tips. Big Thanks to ye all and roll on next year.

    Another good picnic.
It was my least boozy picnic, which was a good thing in many ways..
Friday I went full throttle, as per usual with picnic Fridays, and had a great time just wandering around with my buddies, and a nice (if brief) meet up with fellow boardsies.

Roadhouse Doors and TCM were a great way to kick things off, and i spent much of the evening and night just taking things in (freetown / B&S / My lovely ranch / Trailer Park), and as a result I didn't see too many acts.

Saturday and Sunday I had 4 or 5 beers spread out over each day, but the lack of beer buzz didn't lessen my enjoyment!

The Strokes / Bunneymen / Johnny Marr / Richard Ashcroft were my highlights.
I got to see a few trad societys in Hazel Wood, and a hootenany band on Salty dog which were all great.

The food as ever was top notch. The toilets were clean any time i visited. The price of a pint was a bit much, but they have a captive market i suppose.

I liked that there were non-alcoholic alternatives. Non alco cocktail at the Bombay bar @ 4 quid, and Heineken 0.0 at most bars (4 quid for a 330ml can is a joke though).

I felt that opening the Salty dog worked well enough, even if it was a bottle neck at busy times to and from Freetown. Pints at the bar there being a fiver rather than 6.50 in the main bars seemed pretty good in fairness.

Getting to the Hazel wood from PM was a bit of a faff I thought.

I liked Freetown and it has potential for sure, but they could probably utilise the space a bit better.

I think Trenchtown would benefit from an entrance directly into the main arena (if possible), rather than from Hendrix on one side, or Salty dog on the other.

The picnic is great, and the spread in ages is lovely to see. It caters to everyone quite well, which means it'll sell out in record time next year without doubt.

However, something has changed, and it was on my mind all over the weekend as to what it was. Sure the festival has changed as it's expanded, but I don't think that was it.
It's possible the reason I can't put my finger on what's changed, is because it's me that's changed...
Will I be back next year? If my wife wants to go, i'll go. But as good as it is, I can take it or leave it. maybe this is just the post picnic blues talking...

You are dead right, some/most had dedicated guys cleaning constantly and talking it very seriously, dare I say having a bit of pride in their work.

Almost certain I seen the same at the smaller toilet areas earlier in the year at B&S.

Probably myself wearing a white fedora hat (the fake Larkie) and the missus the real Larkie, she was a bit surprised to discover I was using her nickname on this forum but set up my boards profile years ago and cant change it , sorry to have missed the photo.

Highlights for me were the Strokes, Roisin Murphy and KKC, the more I think about the Strokes who I wouldn't have really been into is that rock n roll is supposed to be tight, edgy and provocative and they got that nailed

Stayed in the campervan so no problem with either noise or neighbours - always good craic (apart from Sunday nights fireworks)

Lots of walking, talking, drinking, gawking , eating, dancing, laughing, loving, sharing and most importantly listening

    Roll on 2020

    ...

I think this is the first time this was mentioned in this thread. A campervan neighbour (experienced festival head) got stuck in this and said it was frightening.

The reason for this happening was that the usual path people would take from campervans/Joplin/west Warhol to the main arena would be across past Anachronica down through Wilde and past Salty Dog. That lane from Joplin to Anachronica was closed on the Friday and the security sent everyone down the campsite towards the Hendrix entrance. Off we went. We got in fine, but later there was serious problems down there.

This is how I was late for the boardsie meet up. It was way too jammed in there by the time we arrived.

Later when up in Freetown I nabbed one of the security supervisors and asked about the route from campervans. He point out that there was a route around the top of Joplin that would bring you into Freetown (after I showed him it on his map).

On the Saturday the (one way) lane across to Anachronica from Joplin was opened and left open for the w/e.

It was the few bits of poor organisation I saw over the weekend.

What a weekend! I can honestly say that the picnic destroyed me. My back is still in bits and I've been wearing my sketchers since I came home to help my feet recover. I'm still tired. I think I may be too old to physically do another one. I had a great weekend nevertheless. Managed to catch a ridiculous number of acts (which may have contributed to how knackered I am).

    Friday:
These Charming Men (kept an eye out for an obvious boardie meetup but couldn't see any) - husband loved these. I apparently know fewer Smiths songs than I thought. They were good craic though.
Billie Eilish - Really great set. She has some stage presence for a 17 year old and her songs were flawless.
Dermot Kennedy - Was really impressed with him. He really belted out every song and was clearly delighted with the response he got. Visuals on the screens were really impressive too.
Hozier - Was grand. He's undeniably good at live singing and I quite enjoyed Nina Cried Power just can't put my finger on why I didn't love him. I dunno what it was. He was just grand.

Hung out at the Salty Dog for a bit and my god the stench of the bloody seaweed. What were they thinking? Also felt it a bit of a slap in the face having to pay a fiver for a can of Orchard Thieves at the bar.

    Saturday:
Join me in the Pines - teeny crowd in Jerry Fish for this but it was a nice set.
Otherkin - amazing. Was worried that they wouldn't get a decent crowd as there was about 20 people in the tent when we arrived at around 25 past. But it swelled after about 5/10 minutes. It's such a pity they're quitting, they're a fantastic band live.
Gerry Cinnamon - set of the weekend for me. He was just electric. Had the crowd eating out of his hand and despite the obvious **** in the crowd throwing pints/shoes/hats he was just fantastic.
Kneecap - bloody brilliant. we only caught the last 15 minutes of their set but they were absolutely loving it. Had the terminus tent completely bouncing. I was so glad I went to see them. Who says the Irish language is dead?
Foil, Arms, and Hogg - needed a rest so we popped into the comedy tent. Despite not being able to hear properly it was very funny. I saw Des was on the thread earlier - very funny.
Metronomy - Caught the last 2 songs of their set and they seemed tight and put on a good show.
Strokes - were a total disappointment. Casablancas ruined the set with his drunked/coked up antics. It was just cringy and embarrassing. He clearly didn't give a sh1t and wasn't bothered. Waste of money for a headliner IMO.

    Sunday:
I slept really badly on Saturday night and I was reaching the limits of my pain threshold so Sunday was bad for me. I was just exhausted and grumpy all day which is a pity. I spent so much time looking at my watch waiting for the gigs to be over. :( Still enjoyed the music though.
Dublin Gospel Choir - was delighted they played Muse. Always a great way to start the morning.
Fangclub - wasn't expecting too much but they were amazing live. Even with us sitting down at the back of the tent for the set.
Touts - another great set. They were great craic and had a good banter with the crowd.
King Kong Company - himself went off to Razorlight so I had some time on my own. I popped in for the last 2 songs of the set and was really impressed. Bit too dancy for me but it was a fantastic atmosphere and I found myself bopping along anyway. Loved Mary too!
Cavetown - caught about 15 minutes of him and he was just so sweet and cute. Overwhelmed by the small crowd he had and was obviously delighted to be there. There were a small group of girls at the front losing their minds and he was just so delighted with them. Just so cute. I did spent a good 5 minutes giggling at a guy trying to inflate his worm airbed thingy. He looked ridiculous.
Sam Fender - great set. Fantastic voice and had quite a big crowd too.
Whenyoung - Bit more muted than I was expecting but it was a nice respite in the madness.
All Tvvins - Caught the start of their set. It was fine. What I expected but I wasn't blown away by it. Another big crowd though.
Richard Ashcroft - got there just before the Drugs Don't Work and I thought he was great. Looked his age but it was a really strong set and I enjoyed Bittersweet Symphony.
Kodaline - yer man isn't too charismatic for a front man is he? They were ok. Left early.
Mitski - She was the one I was most looking forward to and her set was just...…….odd. Couldn't understand why she had to do her own soundcheck before the gig? It was weird. And then her performance art thing was just strange. Basically no interaction with the crowd but the songs were good and performed well.
Michael Kiwanuka - I thought before the weekend that he'd be a love him or hate him act. But he was just grand. I don't think the live performance adds anything. He's just an easy listening Sunday morning kinda guy. Left early.
Courtney Barnett - another amazing act. She was giving it socks and I really enjoyed this. My husband likes her more than I do but I thought she was great.
Cathy Davey - trundled over to the Salty Dog for wee Cathy. I was in agony at this point with my back but I was determined to see her. She was as lovely as always and despite being obviously sick put on a great set. Lovely way to end the festival for me. I didn't realise she's actually part of/owner of the My Lovely Pony Rescue thing that had the paddock across from the Trailer Park.

Sorry for the long post. It was an amazing weekend but I sadly don't think I'll be back next year as it's just too much for me physically. We had a campervan this year which was grand (apart from changing the toilet cassette - most disgusting thing I've ever done in my life) but I 100% couldn't have camped in a tent. I didn't think it was too busy and the food and portaloos were really good the whole weekend (shout out to the green curry from Sabi Thai and the cheesy bread place - amazing).

I came across the same problem with that route being closes and couldn't understand why since a one way system was supposed to be in place according to the EP map.
I headed in the opposite direction down to the Jimi Hendrix main entrance and experienced no issue getting in circa 4.30pm there were no queues whatsoever

I did think that one way system would mess things up a bit. I meant to have an early wander one of the days to suss it out, but never managed to see any other parts of the campsites other than the thankfully short walk from ECO to the Freetown entrance.

Thundercats, there was a route from Trenchtown to the arena. It wasn't very well signposted though.

The lack of signage was very noticeable.

I have been going to EP since the start (never missed a year) and I know my way around the site pretty well, but the route out of Freetown to the campervans was not clear especially late at night when you couldn't go left past Anachronica. Two out of the three nights we took a wrong turn and ended up the long way around through the campervan overflow field. No signage up there that I could see.
