I know several paedophiles; they all make excuses for themselves. They are only the ones I know about for a fact, there must be quite a few others. They don’t seem to be able to or want to control it.

Paedophiles have been with us since time began. My father (who loathed paedophiles) told my mother and myself how he was abused as a boy by a policeman, in the 1920s. He was in the British Merchant Navy during WW2 and said a large number of men aboard had the most appalling predatory behaviour s towards other men, women, children. As a teenage girl he warned me how badly a fair number of men could behave, and to diplomatically withdraw my company should I feel uncomfortable.

I always imagine there must be those out there who experience unwanted “jollies” as Fillup describes it in presence of children, and that they have a conscience and turn away from actually harming children. They are hardly likely to own up to such a trait, except maybe to a psychologist if they seek treatment.
