A low level merc is a bang average car, not some high end super saloon. If the engine does the job, I don't see a problem with it

I can remember when those with the rexton would be like it's basically a Merc as there look it's a Merc engine.... Funnily they had the Merc badge on them.

Yes but there's a world of difference between a VAG engine in a Audi and a renault in a mercedes, don't you think?

To be fair, that 1.5 dci is fairly bombproof.
It's one of the few things they've actually done right.

Oh it absolutely is. It's in everything from vans to cars.

The 1.9PD Vag engine and the OM606 are both bullet proof too. Would you like either of those engines in your 2020 mercedes?

I'm not really a Mercedes fan, but if it was reliable it wouldn't bother me, especially if it's a diesel.
If it's a decent engine, does it really matter who makes it?

How though? The end result is the same.

It's funny how it seems outrageous to some for one brand to do it but perfectly acceptable for another because they are part of the VAG group or because they have been doing it for decades.

This issue is customers are paying a premium price for what is perceived to be a premium car brand yet it's being powered by a 'commoner' or even a "budget' car brand.

I doubt Mercedes have it written in their glossy brochures that their Premium new A class is powered by a French car maker Renault.

I'm not saying Renault engines are bad, the opposite in fact, but it looks like the customer is somewhat duped into thinking all their car is engineered by Mercedes and therefore superior therefore they must pay 1000s over the odds for a Renault powered Mercedes.

So a Skoda/Seat/VW powered Audi is more acceptable to buyers than a Renault powered Mercedes?

    That's a whole different discussion.

Are Audi really a premium brand?

It's safe to say that Mercedes is more premium a brand than Audi.

Conversely, it would be safe to say that most would think VAG cars be more premium than Renault/Dacia.

Therefore, the gap between 'premiumness' between Mercedes/Renault than VAG and Audi.

Most of the components in a car are made by third parties anyway.

I work for an automotive Tier 1 supplier, and the above is sometimes correct, sometimes not.

In certain cases, the "lower quality" OEM actually gets the better part.

In other cases, identical parts go to separate manufacturers, but the "higher quality" OEM's engineers are all over you like a rash to ensure quality is paramount.

Depends on your definition of "quality" too, how sturdy does something look and feel, how technologically advanced it is, or how long will it last? Land Rover, Mercedes and Toyota all take different approaches.

Mercedes is overrated anyway. Cheap German rubbish. Mainly for old people who like golf outings

Anyone use Blackcircles for tyres before ? My Octavia will need 4 tyres reasonably soon probably next month. Had a look and they have Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 in my size for €75.56 fitted which seems very good price wise. Plus there is a local place on the list that can fit time so that would suit.

Yep got efficientgrips for mine there. Chose local place to fit them.
Took 6 days from order to fitting.

Can’t believe a main Skoda dealer let a car out needing 4 tyres.

Well no more it was part of the negotiations I got more off the car taking it without the new tyres than it would cost me to get 4 tyres plus I doubt they would put Goodyear’s on it.

The tyres are perfectly legal the rears are original though so are noisy As opposed to being below legal limit or anything like that. The front have 3-4 mm on them they are Yokohama I could just buy two for rears and go back in 3 months time and get 2 for the front but at that money just makes sense to have a full set matching my view would be different if they were €175 and 19s.

Was surprised, the 18s on mine were €100, was very reasonable.

Mine are standard 16s obviously 18s look better but cheap tyres is nice after having all 18/19 on my last few cars. Plus the size of the pot holes you can drive into and feel nothing is outrageous :pac: Still takes getting used too quite a different set up to the GTI.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the 1.6 PSA being used by loads a few years back including Volvo. And that would be considered worse than the 1.5 dci.

I can understand the argument of paying 40 grand and somebody telling you it's a Renault engine but Mercedes could go out and design their own and end up with a unit with issues like the N47 or Mazda diesel ect.

€75 is very good for Goodyear's fitted. Some places would charge more for Kuhmos and Hankooks, not that there a bad brand either.

The e90 is about 40-60 more expensive per tyre for the rears compared to the fronts in some places I found.

ya used them for my last set of tyres.€10 cheaper than what the place I got the fitted could do them for. Not sure if it was a once off but seem a bit unreliable for delivery. Emailed me Thursday 5.50pm telling me appointment for the next day was cancelled as the tyres hadn’t been delivered. Despite them having several days to do so.

The guy in the tyre place says they often send one tyre from a set one day and another the next day, whatever way their supply chain works.

A question for all the Toyota enthusiasts :)

    Is the starter the same on a 1.4 d4d 2007 Corolla E13 saloon and a 1.4 d4d 2006 Corolla E12 hatchback?

I'm hoping so because I've just bough one used from ebay from a 06 to go on the 07. I reckon it's the same, using Toyodiy without a chassis number suggests it's the same but have a fear now that the block connector could be different.

    Long shot, anyone :pac:

Supposed to be the same across the Corolla, Auris and Yaris, you'll find them in the first gen Mini as well

anyone think this is weird the date is so far in the past on the dash alongside duct tape on the reg?

If they were just reusing old pictures I'm sure it has more than 260k km on it now if the pics are a year old. Date could just be wrong on the dash
